2025-04-26 Match of the Day

Young Gun, Seasoned Man
Fonseca has been turning heads since the Next Gen finals in December but today his path crosses Tommy Paul in Madrid. Tommy has been up and down of late, I was surprised he lost to Jenson Brooksby earlier this year in Dallas, but maybe that would be the source of some motivation around a surface he usually does well on (clay).

An American in Munich... on clay. Can Big Ben pull it off against Zverev in his home country? I know where my heart is on this one...

2025-04-19 Match of the Day
Okay so it's a post-match entry but still I have to note the battle between Swiatek and Ostapenko.
Tumblr media
It's telling that, as I watched the highlights, in my heart I was pulling for Ostapenko. Not that she is particularly likeable, more that Swiatek is that dislikable. So universally dislikable in fact that you get to see an incredibly motivated Ostapenko covering the court like she is a featherweight. It turns out she can be quick around the court when she feels like it... or dislikes her opponent as a person enough.

Speed Freaks
I've written before about Musetti and how his mental game looms large in whether you get a guy that looks like a Top 10 player or a guy who has "lost the plot." He certainly looked like a Top 10 in his win over Tsitsipas but can he carry that momentum?
I've always loved De Minaur - I already have a broad fondness for the Australian "talent maximizer" types but this guy is the quintessence of a player that gets absolutely everything out of what they are capable of in a match.
A "god mode" Musetti can probably beat anyone but the steady, hard-working Aussie is more likely, in my mind, to win this match.

A bit late to select (Central Time, US and I just woke up).
The Physical Kids
This is what happens when two of the most athletic guys in the ATP collide. I'll have to watch on replay but no matter who wins both guys will be feeling it afterwards.

Battle
I'm looking forward to Meddy and the DeMin doing battle on clay. Medvedev hates the surface but it evens things out a bit (I think he has an edge when it comes to hard courts).

2025-04-04 Match of the Day

All Americans!
I could pick any of the matches in Houston as Match of the Day. The one flying under radar is Brooksby/Kovacevic since a lot of people may not have seen Kovacevic play but I love that he played college tennis (Illinois) and he hits a beautiful "onie" (one-handed backhand).
Michelsen/Tiafoe is another interesting one; will the youngster get the better of the now seasoned Big Foe? In the case of Eubanks/Nakashima, will Chris be firing on all cylinders?
But.
If I have to pick one match it has to be Tommy Paul and Colton Smith. These guys are an American's American; they hunt, they fish, they dress up as cowboys...
Tumblr media
Of course the edge goes to the world #13 Tommy Paul but not only do I hope Colton makes it interesting, I hope it edges him forward in his own tennis journey.

Pass the Popcorn!
Two tough women, neither of whom would back down in any fight. Collins will probably be cheered heavily but Ostapenko is used to having to be on her own side. They haven't played for a while and although Ostapenko has the winning head to head, she's struggled of late.

2025 McDonalds All American Game
I searched high and low for a simple box score, the best was on Sporting News.
My first time seeing the Boozer boys. Cameron Boozer is the real deal. So is AJ Dybantsa. So, it goes without saying, was the game's MVP Darryn Petersen.

Battle of Sioux Falls
Two alums of the inaugural MarketBeat Open duke it out today in Houston. Although I lean towards Colton Smith I like both guys and hope to see them succeed long term in their pro tennis careers.
Today actually looks like a lot of fun for Houston fans. Can Brooksby get a quality win against a big hitting lefty? What kind of form should we expect from Tommy Paul?

Talent
Colton Smith won the hearts of many at the Marketbeat Open here in Sioux Falls. He's a likeable kid and his tennis game is electric. There were only a few goons I saw cheering against him and that was, one admitted to me with this low IQ grin on his face, because they had a bet against him.
James Duckworth fits many an Aussie profile - a talent maximizer who squeezes every last bit of his physical abilities and technical skill in his matches. At 33 years old this has taken a toll: 9 surgeries including multiple surgeries on his right elbow (3), right foot (3), and right shoulder (2). Throw in a more recent hip surgery in 2022 and we're talking a man who has really given his body to the game.
While I'd like to support Duckworth soldiering on I like the probability for Colton. As a college athlete he's probably run into a lot of variants of talent maximizer/grinder. As he accumulates experience and develops physically he'll continue to get better. That's my hope anyway, I won't pretend impartiality!

Young Guns
Today will be a rematch of sorts for Michelsen and Tien. Here's the thing - although they have a recorded ATP match at the Next Gen Finals last December my guess is that these two have been battling for many years since they both came out of Southern California.
I also find it interesting that even though Michelsen has more ATP experience (and quality wins), the UTR algorithm places Tien above him.
Tumblr media
As a parent of a competitive junior there are two things this brings to my mind: first, it is possible (and more likely!) that quality players come from highly competitive environments. Secondly, UTR is fuzzy, indefinite logic. Don't define yourself by it, maybe Learner beat Alex way back in orange ball.

Cinderella, Denied

Like it's 2008 all over again, only the top seeds made it through to the Final Four. Some folks feel inspired by the dream it and you can do it vibes but this will be among all the happinesses that will be shattered for the year 2025. This year that phrase goes: dream it and you'd better be a #1 seed.

2008
An AI bot tells me:
The lone season since the NCAA Tournament's 1985 expansion where the four No. 1 seeds reached the Final Four was in 2008. Kansas, Memphis, North Carolina and UCLA were awarded the top seeds in the bracket that year.
