Photobook layout test
This is just a layout test
!All the texts are just something ramdon!
Feedback: Less photo in one page. For landscape photos, I can make one across two pages. Think about how I am going to tell the story with my signature photo (the dead bird most liekly)

Photoshoot
I went back to the other wetland I have been to in the first half of the sem. It is unmark on the google map. This photoshoot was focused on birds instaed of landscape and environment. I arrived the location a bit late due to trafic so I knew I did not have too much time left. However, I was lucky enough to see some water birds wandering around, which I got to take some photos of them by hiding in the bushes near the water. Just few minute before I headed back to my friend's car, I saw a fantail flying around a metal gate. It stayed there for around 20 minutes. Unlike other birds in the wetland, it was unfazed to my presence. It was even comfortable enough to approach me and land close to where I was sitting. I was able to catch some photos of it flying but they are very noisy due to the light condition.
Light condition was pooor, so all the photos will need to be denoised.
My camera MISS the focus on these photos;((((

W9 in-class activity
Specifications-Excellent high achieving
Although I have a lot of images have already been edited, they dont look very cohesive next to each other. I think there's two way I can do. First is to spend some time on color grading, making them having similar hue and color temperature. The second option is to have proper layout on my photobook. I think it's very likely that I will have to do both.
Composition-Excellent high achieving
I usually just use the rule of thuirds for my composition. Most of the time it is hard to have creative compostion on wildlife photos especially when they are on the move.
Concept/Content/theme-Excellent high achieving
I think I might need some twiks on my concept, but it is on the right track so far.
Image Quality-Average Moderate achieving
Wildlife photos always have good depth of field due to the nature of telephoto lens. I think need to work on my exposure on landscape photos a bit more. I found it difficult sometimes to get the correct exposure on vegetations, water and sky all at the same time. The solution might be taking three photos with correct exposure on one subject at a time before merging them, but that will require a tripod.
Creativity/Originality-Average moderate achieving
Although I have a large number of bird photos, the variety of bird types isn't very impressive. I was hoping to see different birds in recent photoshoot, but didn't find any unfortunately.

Leila Jeffreys
Leila Jeffreys is a Australian photographic and video artist who is well known for her large-scale portraits of birds. Similar to Joel Sartore's Photo Ark, Leila's photo were taken in a studio, a controled environment. One of the biggest difference I found between Her work and Joel's is name. She includes not only the name of the species but also the name of the bird, like 'Butter Ball' Budgerigar, 'Sirocco' Kakapo and 'Shytan' Golden Eagle. Name is a very powerful word since it create intimacy, bridging the gap bewteen viewers and birds while making a deep memory. Leila's portraits were also taken in a much closer distance compared to Joel's which usualy captures the whole animal.

Three challenges
First, I think I've secured couple outstanding photos of wildlife. However, I've not yet got any strong photo of landscape. I'll review my camera raw first. If I can't find any I'll need to focus on landscape on my next photoshoot.
Second, I need to figure out how to tell the story by connecting my photos together. Now I have various bird with some landscape photos, but it’s hard to draw the connection between them.
Third, find a signature photo that represents the campaign
I would like to plan a photoshoot over Whangamarino wetland if I can manage to get my ride. It can give this project a richer background if I can include both current wetland and prehuman wetland. If I don't get my ride, I will be working on making a photobook.

Week 7 photoshoot
I went to Porterfield Rd Bridleway again this week to see if there is any changes after the rough weather. This photoshoot were more focused on landscape instead of wildlife; therefore I had my 24-120mm lens attached instaed of my 400mm.
I found a portion of the farm near wetland is flooded. It's very interesting since wetlands can provide flood control. Would the severity of flooding decrease if the farmland have not expanded that much?
On my way to the shore, I walked pass something unusual, something I could not overlook, a dead juvenile Karoro lying on the grass near the track. The condition of the body was great. It seemed the bird had died not too long ago. There was no injuries that could be observed on the body, so it was hard to know what caused its death.

Reaserch
According to Annabeth Cohen, "The rate and extent of wetland destruction in New Zealand has been recognised as among the highest in the world." To make the matter worse, a third of remaining wetlands in New Zealnad are on private land.
One of the primary cause of lose of wetland on private land are associated with drainage channels due to the increase in dairy farming. In Auckland region, 72% of wetlands are located at private property.
Primary regulation:
Resource Management Act (RMA) 1991
New regulations protecting wetlands after 2019:
National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management (NPS-FM) 2020
National Environmental Standards for Freshwater (NES-F) 2020
Resource Management (Stock Exclusion) Regulations 2020
New Changes in 2024:
Resource Management (Freshwater and Other Matters) Amendment Act 2024

Reaserch
Wetland is a critical component in the ecosystem. It supports native species, and provides water filtration and flood control. Sadly, according to this article, just Auckland alone lose nearly 55,000 hectares.
What people need to understand is the constructed wetland or restoration alone cannot replace the biodiversity or ecological functions of original wetlands. Therefore, prioritizing wetland conservation is crucial, especial when many wetlands are located on private land, which is vulnerable to degradation from development, farming, and drainage.

Week 6 photoshoot

I revisted Porterfield Rd Bridleway again this week, but taking a different route. This route leads to ocean, with farmland next to it.
The weather was great. Very good lighting. Just about 1 and a half hours before sunset. Low tide. It was a perfect environment for wildlife photography.
Unfortuantely, I did not see too many birds during this photoshoot.
