Dear Kpop Stans-
After loving and supporting east asian artists, you’d think that we’d have respect for their cultures.
Guess not.
I was scrolling through twitter and I searched up “ariana grande tattoo” because her getting “bqq grill” instead of “7 rings” tattooed on her hand is literally one of the funniest fucking things I’ve heard.
But then a bunch of kpop accounts were tweeting things like “don’t listen to the haters ari!!! I love your tattoo!!! get >insert hangul< tattooed too it means 7 rings in korean!! ♡♡♡
Just repeat that in your head.
Omg you got this asian language that you barely understand tattooed, so let’s get another asian language you know nothing of tattooed too because it’s so pretty! Such an aesthetic!
No language is an aesthetic. The fact that you’re treating an entire language as "something pretty” is really disrespectful. The whole situation with kris wu is garbage, and she hasn’t made up for it. She’s shown that she really doesn’t give a fuck about respect. She literally did the opposite of what her japanese tutor told her to do to fix the tattoo.
Why did she need it tattooed in japanese, not english? Why’d she get it tattooed in a language she’s not fluent in?
When a white person (or any non east asian) gets tattoos or clothing of an asian language, they’re cool. Cultured. Trendy. When I do it I’m fresh off the boat.
Don’t encourage this. Educate yourselves. We can do better.
