Just saw a news pop up. They found a body in Lake Piru. It will probably be awhile for ID.

From what I’ve read about this lake, people aren’t offially allowed to swim there except in designated areas; but based on the current protests by locals, they don’t actually make that clear to people. This lake is about an hour’s drive from LA. So even though Naya had been there multiple times, she would not be considered part of the local community there. The people who live there hear about all the drownings; and they don’t swim there. They don’t feel there are enough warnings particularly at the boat rentals. I don’t know if you are American but I tend to think we need more than “No Swimming” or worse, “Swim at your own risk” too. We tend to think, “Oh, they are just covering their own ass because they don’t want to hire lifeguards. I can swim.” The island I live on does not just have “No swimming” on the sea wall: the signs actually say “Sharp rocks below the surface” and “Crocodile warning.” You have to be specific with Americans. And they need to tell people when they rent these boats, “You don’t want to get into the water in any area not authorized for swimming because there are 15 ft trees below the surface that can entangle you and sharp rocks. The dam creates unexpected currents that can cause you or the boat to drift pretty far surprisingly quickly etc.” I know if they just handed me a life vest renting one of those boats; I probably wouldn’t wear it either admittedly. They can be uncomfortable and I think I can swim pretty well. But if all the specifics had been spelled out for me, I probably would.
This is what i don’t understand, and maybe it’s because i grew up near the ocean and we didn’t really get in large bodies of water that weren’t the ocean. So you went for a swim in a pool or at the beach... and there were lifeguards. But like... if the water was that murky and is so filled with debri you can only see a couple feet in front of you at best (i mean that’s just a little bit in front of your hand...) then why were people allowed to swim there? And why were there no lifeguards or safety precautions in place to prevent something like this? Why weren’t they prepared to search for people who get in trouble in this water? I don’t understand.

Someone pointed out that the boat Naya rented may have had a ladder. If there was, it is possible they voluntarily went swimming (as opposed to my theory that there may have been an accident where Josey or both of them fell overboard.) This article points out that locals (The lake is about an hour drive from LA.) know Lake Piru is deceptively dangerous to swim in and want more warnings. The problem is it is not a natural lake. It was created by a dam in 1955 which is too recent for a clean bottom. It is filled with dead trees that people can get injured and tangled in. In fact, that’s the reason they suspend the search when it gets dark: this lake is considered dangerous even for experienced divers. It’s also been pointed out the lake tends to look deceptively placid and people don’t realize how much boats can potentially drift there. Pontoon boats are popular for short term rental because they are so easy to operate; but that can also result in operators unaware of potential hazards.

This photo shows the actual boat Naya rented at the dock with yellow tape on it. The same type of boat is in the foreground. You can see how high the platform of the boat sits above the water. It looks like it would be very difficult for anyone to pull themselves up from the water into it. I don’t think Naya took a planned swim with her 4 year old leaving the boat unmanned where it could have floated away and with no one to help them back up. Seeing these boats only further convinces me of the theory that Josey fell overboard accidentally and she jumped in to rescue him. It also would have taken a lot of her energy to boost him up from the water to get him back into that boat.
ETA: This photo indicates there was a swim ladder and it is in place. So, now I do believe it could have been a planned swim. Others have mentioned why the boat wasn’t anchored. I don’t even know if these rental pontoons have anchors honestly. I’ve seen some pontoon rental companies that don’t even offer the ladders: clearly discouraging swimming from them. In the US, laws do vary in states. In California, the ladders may be required for safety. However, if that’s the case, I think there is a greater burden to explain the risks of swimming in that particular lake. From the photos, that lake does look deceptively calm. And pontoons are popular for rental because they are easy to operate; and people can rent and operate them without really knowing as much about boating as they probably should. Naya may not have been aware how fast an unanchored boat can drift away particularly on a lake that seems still.

How do you figure that she couldn’t pull herself back up? Do you think she was injured by pulling her child up.? It’s so bizarre.
When I first heard what happened, I looked up the Wikipedia article for Lake Piru. There have been multiple drownings there. One, in 2008, was a father who jumped to rescue his 5 year old daughter when she fell out of their boat. He managed to get the girl back in the boat but then drowned himself. It’s not an isolated incident. It’s something that is known to happen: the rescuer ends up drowning ... particularly when it’s a parent with their own child. They tend to jump right in without taking clothes or shoes off that tend to weigh them down let alone attempting to rescue by trying to reach the child while staying on the boat/shore. Human nature. My speculation is Josey accidentally fell overboard; and Naya jumped in to rescue him possibly fully clothed. (They keep mentioning her wallet, IF purse, food and an adult life vest being found in the boat but not shoes or clothes or towels. I think she would have stripped down to a bathing suit for a planned swim and also would have brought towels if swimming was planned. And she was reported wearing “white shorts” when she rented the boat.) I suspect she may have managed to get Josey back in the boat but then was too tired to pull herself back into to the boat. It’s just my theory; but sadly it makes sense to me.

Josey has kinda long curly hair and apparently was initially mistaken as a girl. This also slightly supports my theory that he may have fallen into the water accidentally and Naya may have jumped in fully clothed to rescue him rather than them taking a planned swim. He probably was wearing a shirt. Of course a little girl can be shirtless too but if he had been shirtless wearing swim trunks, it more likely have sent code to the people who found him that he was a boy. And little boys TEND to wear swim trunks shirtless for a planned swim. Of course, I could be over analyzing but it just seems more likely to me that he accidentally went overboard and she jumped in after him rather than she just stopped the boat and let it drift empty while they took a swim and he kinda just went back to the boat himself. I think she had to have lifted him up into the boat for him to get back in in any case. I really suspect she just could not pull herself back into the boat after she got him back in.

Really? Remember this?
“Everyone wants to know who is graduating. In your mind, who are the seniors at McKinley?
Ryan Murphy: I think they're all seniors, except I don't think Chord Overstreet is a senior, and I think the Darren Criss of it all is very ambiguous. “
Back then, I think we were amused how he worded “the Darren Criss of it all” and repeated it. But it was a huge clue too.
I could've guessed a lot of the different post-show outcomes we've seen from the Glee cast, but "Darren Criss becomes Ryan Murphy's Favorite Toy, his Inspiration, his Muse" was not one of them.

I’m 52 so I watched it as a kid/teenager when it was first run. My impression of Klinger was the initial reaction to him wearing dresses from his superior, Henry (who was cool,) was “Uh, no. Wearing a dress doesn’t make you mentally unfit. It just means you want to wear a dress so go ahead!” Then, it just became Klinger’s self expression. He really liked fashion! Because he really didn’t want to be there. And then it became not wanting to be there didn’t mean he was mentally unfit but rather totally sane. Then, I think it became his way of maintaining his mental health.
To all the young Millenials about to watch M*A*S*H for the first time, do not be turned off by Max Klinger being a guy in a dress.
For those of you unaware, the character tries several schemes to get out of the army on the grounds of being mentally unfit for service, most notably being a man who wears a dress, which no one buys. It’s played off as a joke but everyone loves him and treats him very respectfully unless it’s a character you’re not supposed to sympathise with.
You might want to call bull on the fact that they’re getting a cheap joke at a man in a dress. But, this man in a dress had a gender identity crisis ON SCREEN (although they couldn’t call it that) and also helped pave the way to allow transgender people into the armed forces.
No, seriously. A congressman who was a fan of the show brought up how Max Klinger cross dressing never was an issue at this M*A*S*H unit and it allowed transgender people to serve in the armed forces!

Brooke Shields at age 15 in the 1980s. Don’t cherry pick; they’ve always hypersexualized little girls. They did it to Shirley Temple too.

Charities/organisations to avoid:
PETA: They’d rather spend their money on publicity campaigns than on the animals in their care. PETA killed 73.8% of the animals in their care in 2015 (x)
FCKH8: Is a for-profit company that exploits oppressed groups for money. They’re also wildly uninformed, and spread misogyny, cissexism and bi/panphobia, as well as stealing their posts/designs (x)
Autism Speaks: They spend most of their money on researching a way to eliminate autism, heighten the stigma against autism and don’t have a single autistic person on their board (x)
Please support other, better charities, and feel free to add any others you can think of to this.
