clover grins when nadya jumps the step. it’s cute and hopefully means she’s someone that likes to have fun, even if it’s just the little things. she likes that. “oh, she really does. any of her desserts are amazing, though, you really can’t go wrong.” she could talk about desserts all day if nadya’d let her, but she’s trying to rein it in a little. she watches as she lists off the type of seafood she likes, making a mental note. “crab and yellowtail, got it. and i’ll make sure they never serve us shrimp again,” she says with a grin. it’s such an easy ask. “anything you can’t eat that we should let them know about while we’re down here?”

fish over sweets is an absolutely wild take as far as clover is concerned, but she’s sure she can get the cooks to have something set aside for nadya to snack on whenever she’d like. “oh, chocolate’s amazing. one of my favorites. but i love fruit sweets too. she makes all sorts of amazing things with berries,” she tells her. “watch your step here, this one’s a little wobbly,” she points out. “now, back to the fish, is there any you like best? a certain something we should make sure to keep on hand for you?”

“i can do a top three. i also saw this thing that’s like a corn dog but instead of a hot dog, it’s all cheese in there and that seemed pretty good, so probably that and then…hm, maybe a slushie? yeah, a slushie sounds good.” three seems…doable. as long as the crowd isn’t too packed in, she should totally be able to make it through at least those three things. estelle smiles at her uncle and takes his hand in hers for just a second. “maybe it’ll happen when we’re not expecting it. like the more you look for it, the harder it is to find.”

“definitely all about balance,” she agrees with a nod. there’s a lot of food on the list and so much of it seems amazing, but she doubts her stomach could handle everything even if her social battery doesn't run out early. she’s thankful landry is the one going with her because he’s always been good about respecting when she’s over it. she smiles over at him and nods. “i think so? i mean, i’ve never had it so i could be wrong, but it seems nice. and we both deserve nice things.”

“well, see, that’s a little tricky. and depends how literal you’re being. obviously, i literally only have two parents. but then i do have a stepmom, so that’s three. and then there’s my uncle howell, but he emotionally feels like an extra dad and was more involved than my stepmom. so…four? four seems correct.” hopefully that clears things up for him. “i actually don’t think it’s ridiculous. at all. like, this is going to sound terrible but you’ve clearly heard about me and i guess i kind of thought being too much to ever be in charge also meant being too much to marry off, but i was wrong on that front,” she says with a shrug. “all that being said, i want you to know i’m not expecting you to give up your chance at love because we’re getting married.” she smiles when he says he knows him. “wonderful. maybe not today, but when we have some time, an introduction would be great.”

“anything else you’ve heard that you want to know is true or not?” clover asks with a smirk. it’s so much easier to focus on these silly, little details than it is to even begin to think about the politics of it all. she can put on a good face and follow court rules when it’s absolutely needed, but it’s boring and she prefers to not have to do that. she softens a bit at the next thing he says because it had been on her mind and it was one of the things she’d been least looking forward to having to deal with. “that does make me feel better, actually, so i appreciate you saying something about it. it’s just…i’m sure this isn’t really ideal for either of us, you know?” she asks, but maybe it is ideal for him. she doesn’t know much about him. “okay, that should be easy enough to remember…do you know an onyx? my mom mentioned he was her friend so i should try to find him, but she’s, like, terrible at describing people.”

“yeah, that’s, like, not super comforting. and maybe you weren’t trying to be but yeah…i’m just gonna pretend i don’t know about any of this. kind of wish it was true right now too.” he wants to talk to his dad about this because he’s always been great about getting him out of his own head, but he really doesn’t want to drag him into it.

"that is a very wise call! absolutely has my support. no issues to be had between us if you can follow on that path. no issues to be had between you and anyone poking around either, i'd imagine. but who knows. i can't predict the future." he can do a lot of very cool stuff, but that's not on the list and he's incredibly grateful.

“yeah, fuck, that sounds pretty rough. i mean, i’ve always been able to do, like, some stuff but my mom was the human parent and didn’t know about, like, any of this so neither did i. it’s just all sorts of fucked up…does the wolf stuff hurt? is that rude to ask? sorry if it is. it’s not like i can ask jasper about his thing. i think i’ve already crossed enough boundaries with him.”

“and yet it’s the one i used,” she quips back. she recognizes that it’s kind of a bitchy thing to say, she must be spending too much time with mat. “oh, well that’s unfortunate. can i just wait in his office for him? if it’s too long, i’ll totally see myself out, but like i said, need to see him.” and maybe her charger is just in there and she can swap it.

fionn raises his brows. "'need' seems like a strong word." the archives, probably, need spencer. he's not sure this stranger actually does. "oh, not a clue. skandalis is the one who whisked him away. have you met the man? could be a ten minute meeting, could be four hours. could somehow turn into a two day road trip. i would put nothing past him."

clover's excitement draws a small smile from her. it's... charming, honestly, this little glimpse at the life of the princess. "not to sound like, absolutely unhinged, but i will say i prefer fish to sweets. it's a merfolk thing? there aren't a lot of sweets under the sea, so i think we just have a taste for fish. but i will admit, chocolate is... amazing. the first time i had it, it seemed unreal. and i'd be willing to bet there are tons of sweets that i haven't had before that i'll find delicious."

blunt. she's blunt. he makes note of that, because, well, he's so fucking glad he's not the crown prince, but he still has duties at court, which means she'll probably also have them, and knowing that she might just speak her mind to the wrong person? that's important. and also it's so much easier to think about the politics of this than the personal side of it. "yeah, okay, good to know. i'd heard that but i wasn't sure how accurate it was." but it seems like their spies are doing good work. great. "not to bring this up immediately, but i know it would be on my mind if i'd been sent off to another court so like. heirs are not really a concern? obviously my court is more than fine with adopting into the royal line. so i think we're great on the no touching." and he's always been glad for the adoption thing, but he feels extra glad of it now. "also? you're gonna get along great with my sister moon, but i think you should avoid sun like... whenever you can." sun is too high-strung for him most days, but he thinks moon will enjoy clover's chaos and vice-versa.

the idea of that does, in fact, make his teeth hurt a little, but it's also not going to stop him from trying it, and probably eating way too much of it. "you're right. it's gonna be so good, and i'm sorry i ever doubted you. but also? might be a good idea to find the nearest savory booth you wanna try like... immediately after. and then the sweet one you wanna try after that. it's all about balance, y'know?" he gives her a smile at that. "you and me both. and i hope you meet someone like that one day, too, if that's a thing you want."

well, that's going for her at least. "who are you?" she asks, knife still firmly against the other's throat. it's maybe not the first question she should've asked, but she hasn't exactly been prepped for what to do when you find an intruder. where's a guard or an annoying cousin when you need them? still, she can maybe do this. and the hopefully bring it to someone much more qualified to handle this.

her instinct is to nod, but the knife at her throat makes that feel way too dicey, so she spells back a quick, "yes." she thinks she'd be a very different kind of spy if she couldn't. maybe even the kind who wouldn't have wound up in this situation in the first place. not that she's going to admit any of those details to anyone else. especially not to someone holding a knife to her throat.

selene likes to think she’s a think first, act second type of person. that’s how her parents raised her and she hates the thought of disappointing either of them, but especially her father. on the other hand, when she perceives a threat, she’s maybe a little too much like the rest of the family. which means now she’s got this girl pinned to the wall without much thought about what comes next because dealing with whatever she’s got going on is so not one of her responsibilities. and now the girl is signing something and she has to really focus because for all the languages she’s learned, she had to pick this up herself and is so not good at it. selene doesn’t move the knife but raises her free hand to spell out, “you hear?” the conversation will go smoother if she can just talk and only have to try and guess half the conversation.

tara's eyes go wide when her back hits the wall. it's rare that things ever truly go wrong for her with her talent for luck, so this is a surprise. she's already racking her brain for a way out of this. ugh, if ichabod or nadya have to come rescue her, she'll never hear the end of it. she's slow to hold up her hands, but she can't exactly talk her way out of this if she can't talk, so she moves them to a gesture of surrender before she starts finger-spelling with one hand. "hi. don't stab?" it's a little more direct than she'd prefer, but she just wants to get the message across. preferably before any stabbing.

“okay, fine i’ll take it back, you’re not turning into dad because you’re actually turning into mom,” she replies, only just succeeding in keeping the smirk off her face. “and i feel like putting a knife against my throat and not doing anything is half-assing things. not mad you didn’t do it, just saying,” she shrugs.

mina’s grateful that serena just keeps going so she doesn’t have to answer the question. even if she’s not the most private person, she knows merrick is much more reserved than she is and she’s trying to respect that. it hasn’t been too hard to navigate so far. “oh, i didn’t know that,” she manages to half mumble in response. she doesn’t even know who her dads are, how would she know they’re gossips? she nods along as she tries to describe merrick. “it makes absolute sense. and i think kind is a very good way to describe merrick.” there’s a lot of other ways she could describe him, but she doubts serena really wants to listen to all of that. “would it be a good way to describe you?” perhaps an unfair question to ask, but she doesn’t regret it.

“no, just mina,” she answers with a polite smile despite herself. she doesn’t trust serena, but she’s certainly friendlier than what she’d expected out of anyone from the court. she doesn’t love the question because she knows there’s a reputation with the brothers. hopefully this isn’t someone with a vendetta against either of them. “i’m with merrick. do you know him?”

clover looks him over. because he could absolutely be lying through his teeth right now, but she gets the feeling that he isn’t. it doesn’t mean she’s going to let her guard down though. still, she can try to be nice. it’s important for the court that this doesn’t blow up in anyone’s face. “it’s not personal. i just don’t like men touching me. or men in general really.” there’s no way that softens the blow the way she thinks it will. “i think being friends is possible. as long as you’re not super boring, because then you’d have two things kind of going against you.”

oh, she's terrifying. and not in the way that he thinks he might find attractive under different circumstances. no, this is in the kind of way that reminds kavi how challenging it is to be a human in this place. his court makes it easier, but it doesn't come without challenges. he holds his hands in a gesture of surrender. "okay, heard, understood. no touching. for whatever it's worth, i wouldn't have done it even without the threat. i won't even hold your hand at court without asking first. i, uh. not to sound just ridiculously naive, but i'm hoping we can be friends, maybe? that would be nice."
