New , Half Moon Design. 😃 This beautiful necklace has been made from the TOP wing of a REAL Madagascar sunset moth, (Chrysiridia rhipheus). They are brightly colored moths native only to the island of Madagascar. Their unique beauty makes them a favorite of traditional jewelry makers and artists who use the moths' iridescent wings to create works of art. In addition to their beauty, there are several aspects that set Madagascar sunset moths apart from other moths. Madagascar sunset moths have only one means of defense -- they are poisonous. The toxins contained in the Omphalea plants are eaten by the caterpillars but not digested. Instead these toxins remain in their bodies through pupation and into adulthood. The result is a moth that is toxic to most predators. Their brightly colored wings may serve as a warning predators to leave them alone or suffer the consequences. By far the most noticeable distinguishing characteristic of Madagascar sunset moths is their appearance. They are large moths, boasting a wingspan of 3 to 3 1/2 inches. It's their wings that really get them noticed. They are iridescent and appear to be in shades of black, red, green and blue. Every time the moths move their wings, the colors and patterns shift, creating a kaleidoscope effect. It's really just an optical illusion, though. Most of the of the moths' wings contain no pigment at all, and in subdued light they appear bland and unremarkable. The flashy colors are created by the curvature of the scales on their wings that reflect light in different angles, giving the appearance of color. The wing in this necklace has been forever preserved between glass for a heirloom quality jewelry piece that is guaranteed to catch the eye of all who see. This pendant comes on a 16" .925 sterling silver chain with lobster clasp.

This is the Blue pansy (Junonia orithya) Butterfly Necklace Set. The Blue pansy is a beautiful butterfly, with a wingspan is about 4 cm. The adult butterflies have black forewings with white marks, and blue hind wings. The hind wings of male is a bright blue with an orange-red subtornal ocellus. Hind wing blue shaded with velvety black towards base, a postdiscal black white-centred orange and black-ringed ocellus in interspace 2, a round minutely white-centred velvety black spot. Females are similar but larger and more clearly defined ocelli and markings. The female is dirty brown on the upper side, and may contain some blue on the hind wings. The undersides of both sexes are a pale brown, with a variety of markings in orange and white plus black/blue eye spots. Each wing has two eye spots on both the upper and lower surfaces. Antennae white or dirty white, head reddish brown, thorax and abdomen above brownish black, thorax and abdomen beneath dull white. Both sexes are similar in color and pattern, but the male has more extensive areas of blue, and smaller ocelli on the hind wings. They prefer open habitats, like grasslands, wastelands, woodlands, open forest areas, and farmlands. They found at elevations between sea level and about 300 to 500 meters. They also found in parks and gardens. They tend to visit tiny flowers growing in grassy areas, and sunbathe with wings fully open. The flight is rapid and typically done in a gliding fashion. Both sexes nectar at a wide variety of wild or cultivated flowers. This butterfly has been preserved between two pieces of glass making two separate necklaces, then sealed shut with silver. Each pendant measures 2"X1" and comes complete with 20" Sterling silver chain. The perfect gift set for mothers and daughters, great for sisters, best friends. It is important to know that all the butterflies I use to educate others through my art are always ethically sourced.

I have been extremely busy putting together a ton of beautiful new jewelry to add to the shop for 2017! Here is one of my latest creations, A necklace set made exclusively for sisters & best friends made from a REAL Peacock Pansy Butterfly (Junonia almana javana). The wings are rich yellowish brown with darker brown edges at both termen and costal margins. On each of the forewings, there are four distinct costal bars, the outermost three of which are filled with darker shadings. There is a prominent ``peacock'' eye-spot in space 2 near the tornal area, and a lesser one in space 5. On each hindwing, a much larger and more prominent eye-spot is featured in spaces 5-6 near the apex. The termens of both fore- and hindwings are marked by two series of marginal striae. Underneath, the wings are duller and the costal bars are filled with paler shadings instead. Compared to those on the upperside, the ocelli are smaller and on the hindwing, there is an additional ocellus in space 2, and the spot in spaces 5-6 appears to be a conjoined pair. Each of the fore- and hindwings has a dark stripe traversing from the costa to the dorsum. The stripes appear to be continuous across the two wings. The stripe on the hindwing is outlined by a broad pale band on the inner edge. ❤ The wings of this Peacock Pansy have been preserved between glass so that the uniqueness of both sides of the wing can be viewed. Each pendant measures 2" Long and about 1" wide. Available soon in my Etsy shop. #peacockpansy #peacockpansybutterfly #daydreamoddities #saveourpolinators #ethicallysourced #butterflyfacts

Meet the Famous Caterpillar hunter. This brilliant, metallic green beetle is sometimes found in large numbers during the Missouri spring, being attracted to lights at night. It may cause alarm because of its large size (it reaches 1 - 1½" in length) and the odor it emits to ward off predators and intruding humans. The wing covers have many fine longitudinal furrows that are beset with tiny punctures, and each cover has a reddish-copper border. The head, pronotum, and legs are deep metallic blue or purple, and the pronotum has a gold margin. Imprudent handlers could receive an unwelcome nip from the hefty mandibles. However, Calosoma scrutator is a highly beneficial species that climbs trees in search of caterpillar prey. Although the beetles are active from May to November, they seem to be especially numerous in May after trees are fully leafed out and while the spring flush of caterpillars is ravaging the foliage. Adults winter over, and they live up to 3 years. Eggs are placed one at a time in soil. Larvae also hunt caterpillars and climb trees and shrubs in search of prey. They pupate in earthen cells. #daydreamoddities

Over the summer my family and i raised, tagged and set free over 1,000 monarch butterflies. Even tho we have great passion and love for what we do it is unfortunate that not all of the caterpillars and chrysalis make it to the final stages. Whenever this would happen I would save the chrysalis and dry preserve it because I simply didn't have the heart to toss them out. Well, after much thought I decided to mount them into these mini terrariums and make them into butterfly Medicine pendants. Butterfly Totem Animal Spirit Guide Meaning Butterfly spirit people carry joy in their hearts infecting others lucky enough to be in their presence. Having Butterfly animal spirit will guide you on a path of self-transformation, working towards evolving as a spiritual being. Butterfly will always provide the strength to move forward, solving issues and offering healing along the way. Butterfly spirits are attuned to the harmony of the earth and are sensitive to their environment. Dreaming of Butterfly awakens us to the dance of life with colour, lightness and Joy. Because this is a REAL Monarch Chrysalis, that makes this item an extremely rare find I only have a limited supply of these available. https://www.etsy.com/listing/485920832/real-monarch-chrysalis-terrarium-pendant
