The remark draws a thorough eyeroll from her, and she deliberately drags her eyes over the younger Holstrom in order to make him squirm just a little under her scrutiny. When her eyes meet his once more, she flashes him a fanged grin, her wolflike features unmistakable with this expression plastered onto them. It's clear from said expression that the words she speaks are entirely playful, though the remark itself sounds far from it.

Of all the people Danika had been forced to leave behind when she went under deep cover, Baxian had by far been the most heartbreaking. She had long debated clueing him in, but there had been so little time to do so...and it would have put him in so much danger she had not been willing to take the risk. In the years that followed, it had taken so much self-restraint not to step out of the shadows and find herself back in his arms; an embrace she had so dearly missed from the moment his lingering touch upon her skin had gone cold. She had felt how much the news of her passing had crushed him, the mating bond having been a conduit for the agony he'd been in. For her, it had manifested as the feeling of claws, shredding her heart into a thousand little pieces. And still, she had kept going.

But how was she going to do this? Reintroduce herself, putting aside the pain of years of separation and him thinking she had died? Despite the deep cover being out of pure necessity, he would have every right to be angry at her. But in truth, as she approached him, arms to the side and ready for the impact, she just furiously wished they could skip all that in favour of just...resting in each other's embrace. She had weathered so much on her own for all these years, to lean into his support, if he would still offer it after all this time, would be an immense weight off her shoulders.

The arms at her sides felt awkward then, and she tucked them into the pockets of her jeans, ducking away from the chill that crept up on her as she came to a halt a few paces away from him. Her eyes were watery, but with the clenching of her teeth and a deep breath, she managed to keep tears at bay. But even though she willed her voice to cooperate, it cracked as she spoke to him, nonetheless. One word was all she could muster.

It had always been the absolute best thing---this, right here; a haze of red hair in her peripherals, the scent of lilac, nutmeg and a hint of what Danika could only describe as raw starlight filling her nostrils, and some ridiculous show blasting on the tv, its sound wholly drowned out by the beating of her best friend's heart as her head lay on the female's chest, rising and falling with her breaths and shifting only for the occasional reach for snacks or if the redhead decided to yell at the tv. This time, the wolf was the one to alter her position, angling her head up to fix caramel hues on the woman beside her. Good grief, she was so devastatingly beautiful, and she only seemed to realise it to a certain degree. So much potential there and in other areas that lay uncovered. Uncovered, like the secrets between them. Another thing Bryce was wholly unaware of.

Danika had to avert her eyes then, her nose scrunching into a look of disgust for her own thoughts. Was the situation really so bad that she had to keep all of her knowledge tucked away from the person she would have -and had, in the past- trusted with her life? She mulled it over for a moment, as she'd done so many times before, and the answer was still the same. Even with the tattoo freshly inked into the skin of her friend's back, especially with that tattoo...it was of the utmost importance to keep the situation at hand far, far from the Half-Fae's knowledge.

Reaching a spoon all the way to the other side of the bed, Danika laughed wholeheartedly as she scooped a spoonful of the other's ice cream from her tub before her friend could swat her hand away, the sound of her laughter soon muffled by the spoon in her mouth, upside-down to allow the ice cream to melt on her tongue. As the last remnants of cold vanished from her mouth, her expression simmered down into something more genuine, the subtlest of smiles playing across her lips.

"I'm really glad you decided to dump the Redner kid to hang out with the real players."

Her intonation upon uttering the last part of her remark was very obviously light-hearted, but with hints of something deeper. Something more heartfelt. She truly did appreciate the way Bryce had gravitated right back into her home and hearth. And into her heart, always.
