I Pry
I pry, Not into what’s in the mind of another, But into the assemblage of nerves I call my own. Betrayed, I run around catching glimpses of us, Every single moment as hazy as the first winter morning cradled in dew. Deceived, I run through the nerves and matter like an eager globetrotter would while looking for the exquisite, For that’s what they were, And so I pry, For vexation and bitterness…

Song of The Sinister Imp
It stands there glaring at me from the shadows, a diabolic creature with a ridiculing smirk. Pulling apart the closest of kin and filling in everyone’s gullet a black mass so big, it overshadows the villain’s cruel intentions As I set the sails, singing in joy, ecstatic about the thrilling voyage ahead, the callous beast comes close and sings in a whisper of its friend, the raging waves of…

All we do is wait. Every day, every minute, every hour and every second, in some way or another, we wait for something that will pave a promenade to utopia. They ask us to live in the present but aren't we all waiting for something to happen? No matter how privileged, we all are in our own different ways. Some wait for money, some for people and some for happiness just like how one waits for petrichor after the rain. But what if I like the rain? What if, I in my own distinct way, like the rain and the petrichor that comes after it? If you like the rain, isn't the world the happiest place you can be? But why is it that sometimes I fail to admire the rain and see it through glasses of rage and dejection? Why is it that I sometimes choose to blame and run far, far away, away from what might be happiness all because of the "detested rage of the winds, the purpose of my spleen"?
Not only does the rain confuse me, I think about the sunny days where the harsh sun glares at me for the disappointment I am; forcing me to peer, burning my skin and telling me I don't belong or the harsh cold days where the non-existent frost bites into me and the wind slaps me, almost as if pushing me away; but I later realise that it's just the sun increasing vigour to free me from the gelid oblivion inside and the winds pushing me away from the hell hound I might encounter.
In the end it's all about whether I want to sing in melancholy, jollity or fury. Any way I chose, I know I'm still going to wait for petrichor. Whether it's sunny, cold or rainy, in my head runs a comparable universe filled with the perfume of the sweet smelling earth, luring me away from reality and forcing me to turn my back and become a craven.
Is it acceptable that I force myself to see the rose in rouge fearing that if I don't, onyx might take over? Now, as I write this I tell myself that I sound thankless and stubborn but that's what brings me the button eyes and forces me to see an already existing nirvana.
The eyes don't sense aroma and I know that for as long as I can smell, I will still wait for petrichor with my pale-hued button eyes.....

Barbie

“So what do Barbie dolls teach children about the world? They teach children that it is desirable to be thin, white, and blonde. They may encourage children to strive for an unrealistic body image.”
So I just read this online and it nettled me. Growing up I was easily identified as a tomboy (thought I wasn’t) but I used to play with Barbie dolls a lot and I’ve watched almost every single Barbie movie out there. Sure, I thought she was beautiful but looking back, what I remember the most are the things I’ve seen her do in the movies.
I know for a fact that every little girl who plays with a Barbie doll has watched at least one Barbie movie and I can vouch that every single one of those movies has something superior to share. Barbie has always been portrayed as compassionate, forgiving, non-judgmental and humane.
Now, I know people say that the protagonists (the good guys) are portrayed as very charming and the bad guys, ugly. That may have been the case in Disney but in most Barbie movies; the bad guys look just like the other characters (with darker make-up or taller) unless they were ogres or some other supernatural creatures.
Why don’t we talk about Johnny Bravo? (don’t get me wrong I love him) He may have passed on unrealistic body images to little boys and he “disrespected” (that’s what it would be called if it was done today and no, I’m not making a meme reference) almost every woman he saw but we don’t talk about him like we do about Barbie because 1) He never was as popular; and the more important reason being 2) He never got the girls anyways.
In ‘Fairytopia’, she taught me that being different and disabled doesn’t matter and that you can still be nice and help people, ‘The Twelve Dancing Princesses’ (my favourite) taught me about the beautiful relationship between siblings (my sister wasn’t born back then), ‘Fashion Fairytale’ taught me that there’s always room for improvement, ‘The Magic of Pegasus” taught me to never give in to something I’m forced to do; and these are the things I take from my childhood of being a Barbie fanatic*. Moreover, she has been the inspiration behind multi-ethnicity dolls like Fulla (Arabic and burqa clad), Princess of the Nile (Egyptian), Japanese Ken and many more.
Saying she has an unrealistic body is the most nonsensical statement I’ve heard. Since when did cartoon characters and dolls ever have realistic bodies? Popeye? The Simpsons? Ed, Edd and Eddy? The Cabbage Patch Kids?
For a society that shuns people for judging people based on their bodies and not “what’s inside”, we sure judge a children’s character a lot.
“Don’t judge a book by its cover”? How about we start with popular images first?

When we read books or watch movies set in dystopian worlds, we like to think of ourselves as the protagonist, relate to them, and when we ask ourselves what we would do in that particular situation, we envision ourselves doing exactly what they are/were doing. Being a part of “Dumbledore’s army” in Harry Potter, snooping around and standing up to evil like Tris in Divergent, refusing to get a plastic surgery like in the Uglies….. but is that what we would really do? What we’re doing now is probably what we’d do there. We all like to tell ourselves that we’d stand up for what’s right and rebel against evil if we were in there (that’s what I like to think at least) but I don’t see much difference in this world in comparison to the dystopian worlds I’ve read about. In all worlds/dimensions, it’s about one big society against something much bigger and powerful. In other worlds it might be Death Eaters, delusional sadists, a few higher ups who believe their values beat all or maybe even Greek Titans; but what we’re up against is something much higher and something much more powerful. Something that isn’t corporeal and something that can’t be rid of with a physical weapon... something that people are brought up with as much as food and water. Opinions. We’re up against the epitome of the calm before a storm. A bunch of kids stood for what they thought though most of the adults preferred to ignore the fact that an evil lizard with no nose was plotting to take over their world. A group of warriors decided to break down a world they’ve lived in all their lives to discover the true purpose of existing. While they might’ve used their whips and swords to stand up for what they think is right, ours is a battle of wits. No, what I’m implying isn’t about wearing leather jackets and rebelling against the authorities, but about putting yourself out there and letting people know what you think. You support LGBT rights? Why don’t you stand up for it when people are bringing it down? You’re a guy who listens to K-POP? Why are you afraid of fan-boying in public? You think someone’s being brought down? Stand up for them because if you don’t nobody else might. Everything we think matters but this does not mean we disregard what others think either. You’re friends with someone with an undeniable dark sense of humour? Let them be but you don’t have to agree with everything they say because being the kickass vegetarian animal-rights supporter you are doesn’t make you any less cool than what you are right now.
So it all comes down to this one question: Are we really the heroic protagonists we picture ourselves to be in other dimensions?
A/N: This is a major idealistic rant of mine about a utopia I know will never exist but here’s what I think every time I see someone (including me) take a “which Hogwarts character are you?” or “which faction you belong to” test. I aspire to become what I’ve written and this is one of the major reasons I started this page. Please give me your feedback on this, it would mean a lot. Also tell me what your favourite dystopian world based works are.

Cyclone: Menacing Beauty

I rise from the rage of the winds,
An unruly force as known,
Parted from my tranquil home,
I shoot to the open ether,
Once serene and still,
I am now a wayward worry,
Once relished and loved,
I am now loathed and feared,
All the deed of the detested rage of the winds,
The purpose of my spleen,
All the deed of the winds,
The reason I bring such agony,
I advance in dizzying spirals,
A menacing beauty I am called
Through hamlets and boroughs and districts,
Whirling everything I see,
I escort alarm and panic and fear,
The cause of so much despondency,
The awfully dreaded me,
A menacing beauty indeed.
A/N: This is a poem I wrote when I was very young and wanted to share it because it’s something that helped fuel my passion for writing. Hope you like it. Please give me your feedback, I value them a lot.
PS: The picture does not belong to me, credits to the owner. I just felt this image went very well with my work.
