The code of honor around non-scripted promos is so fascinating to me. Like that you're not supposed to ever actually completely bury you opponent and undermine their legitimacy. Or that you ought to give your opponent a warning ahead (hey, today I'll say some real nasty shit about your wife) and then say sorry afterwards. Unless of course you are already best friends in the locker room, in which case you probably get away with more personal insults just like you're more stiff with each other in the ring. So what the audience sees is this intense hatred that makes people question whether there might be real heat behind the scene, when in fact it's exactly the opposite backstage. And then consider what a terrible breach of trust it is for someone that you don't get along with particularly well in the first place to bring up some really personal shit that hurts you. Maybe it's even a good enough of a reason to rip his hair out backstage. Think about someone going off script (there's no script but you discussed an outline), bringing up some surprising new angle, catching you off guard, verbally backstabbing you in front of a live audience and you're supposed to work a match with that guy, you're supposed to trust him with you life when you let him do his moves on you, and you couldn't even trust him not to fuck you over when you were just exchanging words.
