excuse me, i'm borrowing a work laptop and there's a wall to stop me from going to gaming sites. do you or anyone else have any suggestions to bypass the wall?
I would strongly recommend not trying to get around blocking rules on your work laptop because your work is almost certainly logging what happens on the laptop; if they check those logs at the very least you will no longer be allowed to borrow the laptop, and possibly you won't continue to have a work to borrow a laptop from.
Also, depending on how huge a deal anyone wants to make of this, it may be actually illegal to do this on someone else's computer (and even if they lent it to you, that is their computer, and what you are discussing is sometimes described as "unauthorized access" and is a no-shit crime; people also don't think that logging into an ex's email that they had the password to is a crime - it is. Don't do this shit)
You can do whatever you want on your own computer and your own network. If you are on somebody else's computer you have to follow their rules. This is annoying, but unless you are certain that you are good enough to do this in a way that will be completely undetectable to your employer, you shouldn't do this.
If you work someplace that provides you a computer for work, you should ONLY use that computer for work. Assume that your boss can see everything that you do on that work computer and act accordingly.

Not telling your kid they have a learning disability, chronic illness, mental illness etc. so they can “feel normal” actually does the opposite. They will not feel normal if they do not have the context to understand that their normal will be different from that of their peers.

i think when we used to point out that a story didn't need a sex scene what we meant was "this story reduces its women to mere sex objects and gives them no interiority so the sex scenes are gratuitous and geared towards the male gaze" it wasn't the sex that bothered us per se it was the objectification of female characters while givig them little to no consequence to the overall story but nowadays people mean "sex is icky and gross and has no merit to ever be portrayed in our arts which should be good and pure and never ever make ME feel discomfort" and it's like. i bet a bowl of unfrosted flakes looks real good to you rn

I feel like politicians' insults about each other have really gone down hill. These days it's all "moron" and "loser", so childish. Think what you will of Paul Keating, but he gave us such gems as "he's a shiver waiting for a spine", "debating him is like being flogged with warm lettuce", "he's like a lizard on a rock: alive but looking dead", "he's all tip and no iceberg".
Where's the creativity these days?!

“They’re trying to convince people they can’t do the things they’ve been doing easily for years – to write emails, to write a presentation. Your daughter wants you to make up a bedtime story about puppies – to write that for you.” We will get to the point, she says with a grim laugh, “that you will essentially become just a skin bag of organs and bones, nothing else. You won’t know anything and you will be told repeatedly that you can’t do it, which is the opposite of what life has to offer. Capitulating all kinds of decisions like where to go on vacation, what to wear today, who to date, what to eat. People are already doing this. You won’t have to process grief, because you’ll have uploaded photos and voice messages from your mother who just died, and then she can talk to you via AI video call every day. One of the ways it’s going to destroy humans, long before there’s a nuclear disaster, is going to be the emotional hollowing-out of people.”
Justine Bateman on AI in this article from The Guardian

THEY FOUND THE WHITE WITCH CATERPILLAR! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!

For context: the white witch is one of the contenders for the largest moth in the world (biggest *wingspan*--loses to the atlas in terms of wing surface area, and loses to the regal for weight). It has a huge range, and the adult is fairly common.
But no one had ever seen a caterpillar. At all. There were only guesses as to what it might look like and what it ate. until this year. These are some of the first images ever taken of it!!

In 2009, during a break at a Boston Celtics game, an ordinary moment turned into an unforgettable performance thanks to a young fan named Jeremy Fry.
As Bon Jovi’s iconic anthem “Livin’ on a Prayer” blasted through the arena, Jeremy sprang to life. What began as a spontaneous dance quickly escalated into a full-blown show. With uncontainable energy, he sang at the top of his lungs, air-guitared like a rock star, and danced his way down the stadium steps—electrifying the crowd in the process.
The stadium camera, originally just capturing a lighthearted fan moment, couldn’t look away. It followed Jeremy’s every move as fans around him joined in, clapping, cheering, and singing along. His raw, unfiltered joy lit up the entire arena—and soon, the internet.
The video of Jeremy’s performance went viral, racking up millions of views across platforms and even landing a spot on Bon Jovi’s official Instagram. For many, it remains one of the most beloved and entertaining fan moments ever captured at a sporting event.
More than a decade later, Jeremy Fry’s epic dance is still remembered—not just for the moves, but for the joy and authenticity that resonated with viewers around the world.
