Deal & District Strokes Newsletter - DECEMBER 2022
Wishing a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all,
It has been lovely to have so many new members join the club, so we say a huge welcome to Graham Howes and Debra O’Bryne, Alan and Brenda Dyer, Brian and Susan Marston, Pat Scanlon and Ute Doerfer.
Just a short time to go until Christmas and we hope that you all have a memorable Christmas (for all the right reasons!), and give our best wishes to everyone.
NOVEMBER – 24th/27th – The Tree & Nativity Festival at St Margaret’s Church, St Margaret’s at Cliffe turned out to be a beautiful event. Diane and Louise did a great job putting up the tree and supplying the purple heart decorations which were the theme to our exhibit this year. So, many thanks go to Diane and Louise for kindly giving up their time for DDS.
The December 2022/January 2023 dates are as follows:-
DECEMBER
FRIDAY, 2nd – Our Christmas party went well and music and carols given by Allen Adshead made the time very special. His efforts were greatly appreciated and enjoyed by all. Thank you to everyone who made it such a special event and, hopefully, all who went felt it was a really good start to the joy that is Christmas.
WEDNESDAY, 7th – The Christmas meal at the Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club organised by Dorthe has now been fully arranged and we hope that it proves as excellent as it was last year. Lovely to be able to get together and enjoy a lovely meal which we are able to do due to Cyril’s legacy enabling the stroke club to thrive. PTO/…..
JANUARY 2023
FRIDAY, 7th – Our first meeting of the year and Pete is giving a talk about the ups and downs of life in the Police Force with a game of bingo in the second half of the meeting.
SATURDAY 21st/ SUNDAY 22nd - The Pantomime at the St Margaret’s Hall is Cinderella and whilst we can organise tickets for anyone who wishes to go, unfortunately, transport and volunteers cannot be arranged for this event. Should any be able to go under their own steam, please contact Wendy/Dorthe to arrange provision of tickets.
The pier walks will carry on every Thursday, subject to weather conditions, so those who go please keep this outing going as it appears to be good for everyone. Coffee/tea at Aspendos is a real bonus being so near to the pier.
The seated exercise classes are also carrying on into 2023 so, if you go, the date and time are, at present, Wednesdays between 1.00pm-2.00pm. Julie is happy to discuss any problems participants may have with the exercises at the end of the session.
Rebecca arranges appointments for reflexology with those concerned, however should you wish to make contact her mobile is: 07970 416504.
With best wishes from all the committee members.

Deal & District Strokes Newsletter NOVEMBER 2022
2022
Hello to all
October has felt just like summer. This weather is so lovely it feels better to be outside than in and, luckily, we have not had to use the heating much at the moment. Just hit Tuesday 1st November and the heavens have opened. Hoping this is not the end of the reasonable weather.
We welcome all our new members who, we trust, will gradually get to know everyone and make new friends. Please be patient as it takes a little while to update our records.
OCTOBER
FRIDAY, 7th - Curtis Ferris gave us a fascinating view of the life of theatre with his job supplying costumes for Pantomimes. A very enjoyable meeting with a very different subject.
FRIDAY, 21st – The pottery painting at The Mudpie Creative Studio was very enjoyable and all who went appeared to enjoy is thoroughly. The finished pieces are being returned to their owners now and we hope that those involved are very happy with their own.
A few of us have started to make purple hearts for the Christmas Festival Tree. This community event will now be held at St Margaret’s Church at Cliffe as Trinity Church in Deal has had to cancel theirs. If any of you are able to make purple/silver heart shaped hanging decorations for our white Christmas Tree it would be greatly appreciated, please give these to Diane Ferris, or myself (Liz Locke) by 18th November. The festival display dates are listed below.
NOVEMBER
FRIDAY, 4th – A representative from the Guide Dogs Association will attend this month’s meeting and will provide some insight in how they manage to take a puppy and turn it into a wonderful animal that can help a person with sight difficulties carry on with everyday life.
THURSDAY, 24th - Start of the St Margaret’s Christmas Tree and Nativity Crib Festival 2022 at St Margaret’s at Cliffe, High Street. This event goes on for four days and the times to view are: Thursday, Friday and Saturday 11.00am-5.00pm and Sunday 27th is from 12 noon-5.00pm. PTO…..
FRIDAY, 28th – Janet has kindly arranged a matinee film show with refreshments and cake. It is being held at The Courtyard Restaurant, Sondes Road, Deal who will be screening ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, there will be an intermission with the refreshments half way through the showing. Any who wish to go, please complete the form at the meeting on the 4th. The time to be there will be 1.30pm with a commencement time of 2.00pm.
DECEMBER
FRIDAY, 2nd – The December meeting at Gold Road will be the Christmas Party get-together providing food and music supplied by Alan Adshead.
WEDNESDAY, 7th – Dorthe has organised the Christmas Dinner to be held at the Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club. We have been here a few times and as the food has been excellent and the venue can seat us all (quite a large group now) it has been decided to hold it here again. Contact will be made to provide further details and ask who wishes to go.
Dorthe has advised that should any stroke members or carers wish to speak to a counsellor (details will be provided of what this involves), please contact Wendy to discuss and maybe arrange an appointment.
The pier walks are carrying on every Thursday and it is especially pleasant at the moment; rain has only stopped us going once recently and having a drink at Aspendos is so nice.
The seated exercise classes are going very well and most people seem to gain a lot from it. Julie is happy to talk to anyone individually following the class to answer any questions they may have. Should you wish to join, please contact Dorthe initially. This exercise class will carry on every Wednesday between 1.00pm - 2.00pm. Please note that the class is not being held on the 16th November.
As usual Rebecca will contact people to arrange their appointments for reflexology but should you wish to speak to her personally her mobile no., is: 07970 416504 . PTO…..

Deal & District Strokes Newsletter OCTOBER 2022
2022
Hello to all
How amazingly fast this year is going by. Having such lovely weather this summer has certainly been a bit unusual for the UK., so let us hope that the weather for autumn and winter is just as kind.
OCTOBER
FRIDAY, 7th - Curtis Ferris gave us a fascinating view of the life of theatre with his job supplying costumes for the Pantomines. His job extends to everything required by the actors/actresses from wigs all the way down to shoes. He made up Roger and Tony and I have to admit that, at first, I did not recognise Roger (until he spoke), what wonderful female characters they made (how brave). A very enjoyable meeting with a very different subject.
FRIDAY, 21st - Painting pottery at The Mudpie Creative Studio has now been finalised and the address for this is 131-133 Enbrook Valley, Folkestone CT20 3NE. Please be there for 1.00pm as the activity commences at that time. Whilst the cost to members is £5.00 per person, DDS will cover the cost of pottery selected up to £15, the paint and firing of the pottery and tea and cake. Transport has already been arranged for those who ned it. Please bring the £5.00 (£10.00 for a couple) on the day and Diane will collect the money. Should there be any queries please call Diane on 07834 389001.
DDS is proposing to have a tree display at the Trinity Church Christmas Tree Festival and on the 30th October a few members are getting together at Diane’s house in Deal to make the hanging items for the tree. The theme is around purple/silver hearts that will be decorated, so they can be knitted, fabric, wooden, really anything that your imagination will bring. If anyone would like to provide any home-made hearts to the endeavour it would be greatly appreciated. These heart decorations do not need to be too big; we have decided on a white tree this year. The festival is held at the church from Friday 2nd December to Monday 5th.
NOVEMBER
FRIDAY, 4th – A representative from the Guide Dogs Association will attend this month’s meeting and will provide some insight in how they manage to take a puppy and turn it into a wonderful animal that can help a person with sight difficulties carry on with everyday life.
PTO….
For our outing in November Janet is organising a date for an afternoon film followed by tea and cake at The Courtyard, Sondes Road, Deal. The club has eaten at this restaurant a few times and had an excellent meal, they have offered to put on a film at the restaurant and the committee thought it would be nice to do something a little different. More details to follow at our next meeting/newsletter.
Dorthe has advised that should any stroke members or carers wish to speak to a counsellor (details will be provided of what this involves), please contact Wendy to discuss and maybe arrange an appointment, if required.
The pier walks are carrying on every Thursday and it is especially pleasant at the moment; rain has only stopped us going once recently and a drink at Aspendos is so nice.
The seated exercise classes are going very well and most people seem to gain a lot from it. Julie is happy to talk to anyone individually following the class to answer any questions they may have. This will carry on every Wednesday between 1.00pm - 2.00pm
As usual Rebecca will contact people to arrange their appointments for reflexology but should you wish to speak to her personally her mobile number is: 07970 416504 .
Birthdays for October are Linda Scott’s on 1st, Duncan Forrester’s on 11th, Chris Hudson’s on 16th, Claire Manning’s on 29th and Louise Wilmhurst’s on 30th.

With best wishes from all the committee members

Deal & District Strokes Newsletter SEPTEMBER 2022
2022
Hello to all
So happy we have had some rain but still having the lovely weather in between makes it feel great to get up in the morning.
SEPTEMBER
FRIDAY, 2nd – The lovely lady from RNLI proved such a good speaker, making their work at the Walmer RNLI Station very interesting with much community input. The bingo run by Pete and Bruce was also very popular. Its amazing what a bit of luck in winning money can help.
Sadly, the outing to Betteshanger Mining Museum on 20th had to be cancelled for various reasons. However, Janet has kindly arranged a meal at the Courtyard in Deal, see below.
FRIDAY, 16TH – Meal at the Courtyard, Sondes Street to commence at 12.00 for 12.30pm. Janet will have rung everyone down for the Betteshanger Trip and as this meal is at the end of this week all has now been finalised.
OCTOBER
FRIDAY, 7th – We have the lovely Curtis Ferris providing many interesting items from the world of Pantomime Theatre. He will be bringing lots of magical things. This is a very busy time of year for Curtis so we are very lucky that he is taking time to come to show us a small part of his fascinating world. The AGM will need to take a short time at the end of the meeting with the current committee happy to carry on, if agreeable to the members. Apologies for advising you so late in the day but time has just flown by.
As the members have not been on an activity trip for a while, it has been suggested that an outing to the pottery painting studio would be great fun. The last jug that I came away with is still being used and Norm and I look forward to having another go, there are many different pottery pieces to choose from. This was Diane’s suggestion and she has kindly agreed to arrange this and she is in the process of organising it with the studio, the date we are hoping for is Friday, 21st October and this will be confirmed asap. More details given at the October meeting so please let her know if you are interested in going. Diane’s number is: 07834 389001.
PTO…
