I have not been active on Tumblr for years, but I am interested in reconnecting with the pagan and witchy communities.
I consider myself neopagan, and am open to working with more than one pantheon. As of right now I worship two Norse deities, Hela and Freyja. I have been wanting to get back into working with the Norse gods.
I feel drawn to Kemeticism but I am not sure where to begin.
As a future embalmer and funeral director I am interested in reaching out to Anubis. I also feel a bit drawn to Ra. I’m uncertain whether or not if there are other deities within Kemeticism that are interested in forming a relationship with me. I’m totally open to advice or new knowledge!
I’m hoping to connect with people who are interested in:
- Norse Paganism
- Kemetic Paganism
- Spirit Work
- Death Witchcraft
- Green Witchcraft
- Love Witchcraft

Taking Notes for Witchcraft
You'll see the advice of "write everything down" everywhere, and for good reason. It's a fundamental skill when studying anything, in my opinion. You can be a great reader and know all the right ways to spot a bad source, but none of that matters if you aren't keeping notes. A student is only as good as their note-taking skills, and all witches are students.
But how do you take notes?
Well, first of all, take note of this: I'm not talking about a grimoire. This isn't about writing proven spells in a pretty notebook. This is about writing down everything in a non-judgmental, kind of messy, comprehensive log. It should have a standard layout or template to make it easier to use and look back on, but otherwise, it's a working document for your eyes only.
There are countless ways to keep notes on anything. If the school system failed you (as it did many of us), chances are, you weren't ever taught how to take notes. You were just told to "write that down" and never looked at it again. You're not alone! You, too, can learn how to take not just notes but good notes.
Fundamentals of Note-Taking
The important thing to remember here is that notes are for you. There is no test to pass, no professor to impress, no essay to write. These notes are meant to help you in your magical and/or spiritual practice. But what's the purpose of taking notes, if there's no one and nothing forcing you to take them? In my mind, there are a few:
Absorbing new information by associating a physical movement with the topic (as in, remembering writing something down and using that to recall the information)
Being able to go back and reread information you've already gone over, creating a reference document for future use
Making note of thoughts, opinions, and ideas in the moment so you remember them later
With these basic purposes in mind, you might think to yourself, "Oh, that's easy! Just write everything down. Easy peasy." But to make notes not only effective in the moment for absorption and having the information in one place, they also have to be organized. Writing things down willy-nilly is fine right up until the moment you're spending 20 minutes looking for one specific note buried in a pile of loose, unlabeled papers.
So here are my (very opinion-driven) guidelines for taking notes on anything:
Notes must be kept in a dedicated, bound notebook or dedicated digital file system. Not a binder, not in loose-leaf pages, not on scraps of paper. In a notebook. Spiral notebooks are fine, but I prefer something I can't rip pages out of. I have both a digital system and a notebook system; the notebook is for raw notes and unfiltered thoughts, whereas the digital system is more polished (my actual grimoire).
Notes must be kept in date order. Chronologically! Not by subject. No jumping around the notebook, either. It doesn't matter if one page has a list of recipes to test and the next is detailing an odd dream. If they happen on the same day, they exist together.
All pages must follow a template. I have several templates for various subjects -- one for test recipes, one for completed recipes, one for spells, one for research topics... Some are more rigid than others (recipes in particular). You can use any template or method that you want, so long as it works for you. What matters is that they're all the same every time.
The template must include the date, a title, and the purpose or a summary of what the notes are about. This makes it easier to remember when I did something, what it was, what the contents of the notes are, and why I was taking the notes later on.
Number your pages. A pre-numbered notebook is ideal, but you can always add the numbers yourself.
Notes have to be legible. It just has to be legible to you. If your handwriting sucks (like mine), that's fine so long as you can read it later. But this also means making an effort to use language you'll understand. Don't use fancy script you can't read or big words you don't actually understand.
Write in pen! Controversial, maybe! But you should take notes in pen, never pencil. For one, pen won't smudge and fade like pencil will. For another, writing in pen prevents you from erasing your thoughts in the moment. You shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes or crossing things out. Plus, erasing destroys paper. Just don't do it.
Write in two or even three colors. The third reason to use pen! When I write notes, I usually write my template out in black. Then, I'll fill in the basic information in the same black pen. The "actual notes" are taken using a colored pen (blue, often). As I take notes, I usually have thoughts and ideas outside of the information I'm trying to take down. To make these more clear and easier to find later on, I write them down in a third color (red or another fun color).
Let yourself be a little disorganized and "ridiculous." Look. I know I'm saying to use templates and write neatly. But these notes are for your eyes only. You can write things down that you don't think will be actually useful later. Jot down that this detail made you think of that person. Scribble doodles in the margins. Whatever. If it's not going to impede your note-taking, it doesn't matter. But also, if you start reading a book today and don't come back to it until next week, don't pick up the notes on the prior page. Start a new page. The title should reflect that it's a continuation, but don't skip pages to make room for more notes. Fill in every page as you get to them. This is why we number our pages -- note down where the last set of notes are and then keep moving.
An Example - Book Notes
Let's say I'm reading a book and want to take notes from it. The first thing I want to consider is my goal in taking these notes and what I'm hoping to get from the book. My notes will look very different if I'm trying to review a book's quality versus learning a particular type of magic. For the purposes of this example, we'll say I'm taking general notes to glean as much information as I can from the book.
And let's say I'm using... *casts about looking for the nearest book*... The Bountiful Container, by Rose Marie Nichols McGee and Maggie Stuckey. A book I genuinely do recommend for anyone looking to learn how to keep an edible container garden, by the way.
My ideal template for a book includes:
The date in the upper left-hand corner
The page number in the lower outer corner (for left pages, bottom left; for right pages, bottom right)
The title of the book as the title of the page, followed by the author
The topic of the book
What the book contains (spells, instructions, philosophy, guides, lists, etc.)
My goal in reading it and taking these notes
A heading to delineate where the actual notes begin
Dividing parts or chapters in my chosen note-taking pen color
Here's an example of what that might look like:

Note how I'm using bullet points to keep my thoughts organized and separated. You can also see the purple writing that denotes my less organized, in the moment thoughts and feelings on what's being said in the book. Here, the black pen is the template, the teal is the facts presented by the book, and purple is my personal commentary.
You don't have to divide your commentary and factual notes, by the way. I do it because I want to easily delineate between what's actually being said by the authors and what I'm thinking in the moment about what's being said. Sometimes, I'll write them as I have in the above example, in the margins or next to the factual stuff. Other times, I'll write them in line as a dedicated bullet point. It all depends on when I have the thought.
Another Example - Spell Notes
"But what about spells?" I hear you hypothetically asking. I'm glad you've hypothetically asked, dear reader! A very similar approach can be applied to writing notes on spells.
For the purposes of this example, I'll actually show off an updated version of the notes for my Pickled Pickle Hex. Note that this isn't my actual notebook or grimoire, since those are for my eyes only.
For spells, my ideal layout includes:
The name of the spell as the title
The date in the upper left corner
The page number as described previously
The source of the spell
Type of spell (hex, protection, edible, jar, candle)
Purpose of the spell
Ideal timing, if applicable
Ingredients
Instructions
Space for notes before, during, and after the spell (during/after notes may be recorded separately)
And here's the visual example:

Note again how the template and basic information is all in black. This color is all business, detailing the actual, physical steps taken for the spell. The teal pen describes the magical parts -- ingredient correspondences, magical acts, incantation locations, etc. In the actual version, I include the incantation itself here. Then, the purple pen is my thoughts while recording it. It's mostly me talking to myself, but note under number 5 in the second image where I ask, "Include time frame here?" It's a note to self to consider where to add an expiration or expected end date during the casting process.
Again, you can include whatever you want. My original notes have doodles and copious notes in the margins... plus ingredients I needed to pick up for the spell. You can include whatever notes you need to. If it's relevant in the moment, write it down.
Recording Spell Results
A big part of note-taking for me is writing down how things work and how it all went. After all, why would I want to cast a spell again if I didn't enjoy it and it didn't work?
It's important to keep notes during your casting. I would suggest tracking the following:
Thoughts and feelings you have (nervous, tired, happy, angry, "I'm hungry," "I should've brought water with me," etc.)
Messages you receive from spirits or other entities
Odd things you notice (wax dripping strangely, shapes in the incense smoke, sounds nearby, increased pet activity, tarot cards jumping)
Alterations to prescribed steps, ingredient substitutions, added or removed steps or actions
Questions you have during the casting and answers if you look them up immediately
Concerns that come up regarding efficiency, energy levels, whether you're "doing it right," missing ingredients, and so forth
How the final result turns out (how it looks, how you feel about it, etc.)
What your next steps are (hiding it, burying it, setting it on your altar, eating it, etc.)
During this stage, particularly for that last bullet point, decide when you'll come back to this spell to check how it went. Sometimes, it isn't possible to test your results (hexes on someone you don't see consistently, for example). Even so, you should still return to the spell to record how you feel, what you think with hindsight on your side, and so forth. If you can tell how the spell worked, write down what happened and why you believe it's connected to the magical working.
If you like, you can make additional notes on the spell and steps themselves. What I do is I put a note under the post-casting section that says, "Additional notes written [date] in this pen color." And, true to form, it'll be a different pen color to everything else I've written with so far.
Again, remember that these notes aren't final. They're experiments and study notes, not grimoire pages. These notes are what your grimoire will be based on. Once you feel confident with a spell, write it into your official grimoire using your layout and medium of choice. In my case, this means typing up the final, expanded version of my notes and spells.
Conclusion
Look, in the end, it doesn't matter how you're writing stuff down. All that matters is that you're writing it down. Keeping it organized makes it easier to use later. Do what works for you.
Here are a few suggestions for note-taking methods and applications that have fed into my philosophies:
Bullet journaling - This ended up not really being for me, but a lot of the ideals are really appealing. This is where the templates idea came from.
Lab notebooks - By far the biggest influence. I highly suggest all magical practitioners give the lab notebook method a try, especially for testing spells and recording results.
Writing prompts - No, really. Using writing and spell prompts to build out and test my note templates was critical when I was trying to figure out how best to set things up. It's a low-effort way to bang out a bunch of ideas and refine layouts.
Spell books - Obviously. Take a look at how authors lay out their spells. It's organized, easy to parse, and includes details about the working. That's ideally what your notes should mimic.
Obsidian - This is an application for taking notes. It completely replaced my massive, disorganized folder of Word documents. Link between pages, tag documents for easy sorting, embed content from reference websites, draw brain maps, organize folders, use add-ons to create templates... Obsidian has literally been life changing. I use it for everything, including my grimoire. You have to pay for it, but it's very worth it. A second brain, indeed.
Try different layouts, formats, methods, mediums, everything. Hell, write notes on what works and what doesn't for your note-taking. You gotta start somewhere.
If you like my work, consider throwing a tip in my tip jar! Your support helps me keep making posts like this one. Plus, supporters got access to the full version of this post a full week early! That could be you for as low as $1.

Be aware that this blog may touch on sensitive topics regarding death so read on at your own discretion.
• 💀 • Death Energy • 💀 •
Death energy is just energy that comes from death and death symbolism, but as simple of an answer as that seems to be, don’t be fooled by the much deeper complexities that this topic harbors. When we really dig into it we discover some darker truths about our existence and the hereafter. Truths that many people are more comfortable ignoring because they force us to face the inevitable.
Death energy is about stillness, endings, and about the deconstructing and reconstructing processes. It’s about using what’s passed to fertilize what’s new and grow something that has purpose in the next step of your life. It’s about the acceptance of inevitability and what we can’t change to bring about what we can. All in all it’s a very unique energy that can open many new doors for any witch willing to try.
• What Does Death Energy Feel Like? •
Everyone feels energy differently in the basic of ways but even still, it should go without saying that death energy has a different pull to it entirely then life energy. Sometimes those who aren’t used to connecting with it can have a hard time. It’s been described as heavy, or even smothering by some. Others have said it feels cold or chilling in a way. The funny thing here is that these definitely describe what naturally comes with death. Our bodies get stiff and much heavier. We lose our heat and grow cold, and while this definitely sounds unpleasant and shocking to those who aren’t used to spending time with it we must also recognize that it’s a part of a continued cycle. As our bodies further decay the weight becomes less and the shock of the cold against the once warm skin becomes just another room temperature feeling. Another words, things come to feel more natural especially when you understand the process and spend time with it.
All new energy can feel overwhelming to anyone who hasn’t experienced it before. It can bring up a whole plethora of unease, nervousness, even anxiety if you’re not ready for it. Especially death energy. As stated above, it can force us to face certain things. Things that can be heavy and hard to accept. For this reason working death energy may not be for everyone and that’s okay. It deals with subject matter that makes some people uncomfortable and as such if you’re not ready to incorporate it you have every right not to.
• What Can Death Energy Be Used For? •
Death energy is the primary force in death witchcraft and death magick. And as a result each witch is gonna use it in their own unique way. There are so many interesting books and articles published that describe plethora of interesting ways to work with the energy of death. Many of which put their own unique understanding and spin on how it came to be, how it works, and how you can use it. But in my opinion you can use death energy for everything you can use life energy for and then some. It just pulls the magick from a different place and in a different way. Remember each one of us processes things in a different way, especially death energy. Do what makes you feel comfortable and never let anyone push you to cross any lines you’re not ready for. Comfort in magick is very important.
Lastly I want to take this time to emphasize what death energy is not used for. It is not and never will be an excuse to just take human life. Murdering someone is never okay. Nor is it an excuse to unnecessarily torture animals. Now I understand that using animals in general can be a debatable subject, especially when they are killed by the individual. However it should be understood that many believe this is okay during appropriate times and only when you utilize the animal and not waste it. So as an example hunting during deer season or catching a fish. The animal in question can be used for magick but will also ultimately be eaten and many witches see this as an appropriate practice. As long as everything operates within the confines of the law and everything is treated with respect and dignity.
• 💀 • Cemetery Work • 💀 •
For a lot of death witches, doing work in a cemetery or graveyard is a must, although there are those that don’t, a great deal more either do or will do when they get the chance. Lots goes into this type of work though and a thorough study on the subject should be done before pursuing this type of magick. However, some key points to remember are to always be respectful, obey the laws and rules of your land regarding the resting places, and listen to what the dead tell you.
It’s very important to recognize that there are always going to be practitioners that have their own unique rules on this subject, but the best way to know if the dead favor something or not is to ask them. What rules you inevitably believe should revolve around what the dead are comfortable with. That said, some of these rules are shared amongst practitioners. I have compiled a list below with some of them. Remember, this is very basic and what a practitioner adds or changes is up to them.
💀 Always bring an offering for the gatekeeper.
Typically these are the oldest spirits in the cemetery and are in charge of maintaining order. Most offerings include things like coins, drink, bread, or apples.
💀 State exactly what you’ll be doing and ask permission from the gatekeeper.
It’s important to let the spirits know what your intentions are. Will you be doing magick at the crossroads, magick at a grave, or foraging? The gatekeeper should let you know through energy what is acceptable. Remember each Cemetery is different and has different rules over all.
💀 Never take things directly from a grave.
Gifts on a grave belong to the spirit dwelling there. It’s okay to pick up things like trash, or moldy flowers in still water but, rocks, dried or fresh flowers, feathers, etc should be left alone.
💀 Be respectful of the graves and spirits.
Try not to walk near the headstone of a grave (you’re walking on their body. Try to stay near the feet and always say excuse me politely if you have to step on it), always ask for a spirits help never demand it, and always bring them an offering as a thank you.
💀 When foraging never take what a spirit tells you not to.
If you’re gathering dirt, sticks, or plants from a cemetery, even if it’s not on a grave, and you get a feeling like you shouldn’t touch it, then don’t. Spirits will always let you know what they want to keep. Obey that or it’s theft.
💀Always give thanks for hospitality before you leave.
Being polite and thanking your hosts is always a must in general and can bring good energies between you and the dead. Especially if you intend on going back to work at that Cemetery.
• 💀 • Necromancy • 💀 •
Another common staple amongst death workers and arguably one of the most misunderstood practices. Simply put, this practice is divination with the dead. It’s all about connecting to and asking the dead for answers from the beyond. Lots of that used to be done in the cemetery and as a result many wild and fantastic rumors about zombie creation were formed, but that’s far from the truth. There were indeed many radical understandings within the practices history however, but as science matured so did the knowledge on what this practice actually was.
While necromancy is still done in cemeteries even today, it’s not a must. Calling fourth a spirit can be done a number of ways and will definitely alter and change based on the witch. Some working maybe more cultural than others, and some may be more complex. The uniqueness of these practices can number well into the double digits and is always interesting to learn. Some of the most common spirit summoning techniques (aside from going directly to someone’s grave) are the spirit board, a mirror, and the pendulum. As for how these spirits are called, that too can differ from witch to witch. Most often though, it can involve candles or crystals as an energy source, a personal item or favored item like food, and/or the spirits name. It can be as simple as physically calling out to the abyss, beckoning the spirit forward or as elaborate a ritual as calling in the four directional guardians or a guide to lead them to you.
Regardless of how it’s done, it’s always a good rule of thumb to be respectful to them. Don’t demand from them, ask instead, and offer gratitude and an offering when you end the session.
• 💀 • Deity & Spirit Guides • 💀 •
Lots of death workers may worship deity just like any other practitioner. However the deity they are generally more drawn to are often either associated with the underworld, or a psychopomp, like Osiris, Hades, Anubis, or Hecate. However they may also be a deity tied in some way to the personification of death, much like Thanatos, or the grim reaper.
Even if the witch chooses not to utilize deity they can still conjure up spiritual guides of some sort. These guides can be something as common as ancestral spirits or even animal spirits. Most common animal guides often have some death association and symbolism to them. So animals like Black cats, bats, vultures, owls, crows and ravens are quite popular.
• 💀 • Bones & Body Parts • 💀 •
Its not uncommon to see bones on the altars of death witches. Many beliefs around these tools and what they represent circulate within the community. For some specific animal bones it’s believed you can use that animal spirit and energy. Other beliefs revolve not around the animal itself but rather the type of bone, as each one has its own unique symbolism attached to it, such as a jaw being connected to communication. The possibilities are near limitless and for most death practitioners they are a very necessary tool within the craft. Some practitioners even collect additional things like insect exoskeletons, animal skins, and preserved body parts like a rabbits foot.
DISCLAIMER! People should be made aware that it’s always encouraged for all materials to be ethnically sourced. Any form of unlawful collection or cruelty is frowned upon and not condoned within the community.
• 💀 • Conclusion • 💀 •
As started above, these are just some of the basics of death work within the pagan community and serves as a starting point to bounce off of. It’s very important to do your own research and come to your own conclusions regarding this craft and always remember to obey your local laws. Death work can be very fulfilling but not when it’s done under illegal circumstances.

It's Time for Samhain! (Oct 31- Nov 1)

What is Samhain? In the Celtic calendar, Samhain marks the end of summer and the harvest season, and the beginning of the dark, cold winter months. It falls opposite Beltane on May 1, which represents the beginning of spring and the life-filled growing season.
It’s believed that the veil between the living and the dead is thinnest on Samhain. Historically, people were worried that they would encounter ornery spirits if they ventured outside on Samhain night, so they dressed as ghosts or wore masks to disguise themselves. Folks would leave treats on their front porch or place an extra setting at the table to welcome any friendly spirits who stopped by. You can see how these Samhain rituals easily morphed into our modern-day version of trick-or-treating in costume.
Nighttime bonfires were another of the long-standing Samhain rituals - this one was thought to help combat the impending darkness of winter and the fearful chill that accompanied the idea of roaming spirits. Because the veil between living and dead is believed to be the thinnest on this night, Samhain is also a powerful night for divination and spellcasting by candlelight.
Usual Symbols of Samhain:
Ale or Mead
Pumpkins
Skulls
Besom or Broom
Beans
Cauldron
Bats
Keys
Squash
Pomegranate
Nuts
Apples and Cider
Bones
Herbs and Plants for Samhain:
Rosemary – Associated with remembrance and is needed during this season in taking time to honor the memories of our ancestors and other lost loved ones. Can be used in an incense blend and at ancestor altar
Fall Flowers – Includes flowers like marigolds and chrysanthemums. Are associated with protection and chrysanthemums come in handy with connecting to the spirit world
Apples (the fruit, branches and blossoms) – Is considered sacred to a lot of gods. A good apple harvest means that the gods have shown the community their favor. You can use apples in different rituals, especially divination
Pomegranates – Is associated with the realm of the underworld and helps with communication with the dead. It is also associated with fertility of the fall.
Squashes, Pumpkins and Gourds – Is associated with abundance and provides sustenance for your family when the fields become bare and covered in snow. Is linked to psychic awareness and development and protection.
Mugwort – Is associated with divination and dreaming. Using Mugwort baths or incenses in the rituals can focus on treating depression, especially with the seasons changing
Rowan Trees – The branches and berries are a way to keep evil spirits out of your house and are associated with good health. If you plant a tree near a grave, it will prevent the dead from rising.
Sage – Is associated with cleansing and grounding. Is a great incense to cleanse your home to bring in the new and out with the old
Hawthorn – Has been associated with the gateway between humans and the spirit world. Is also rumored to an area where you can see fairies.
Crystals for Samhain:
Amethyst – Aids in opening one’s third eye and is valuable to be able to see Samhain’s spirits around
Black Obsidian – Is great for grounding and protect from evil spirits. Can be used in scrying when speaking to deities and spirits of Samhain
Citrine – Is used to honor the sun. Aids in prosperity spells and carries joy
Black Tourmaline – Wards off unwanted spirits from your property and can be buried into the ground to protect from psychic attacks and spirit intrusion
Orange Calcite – Orange is a sacred color to Samhain. This stone is associated with one’s sacral chakra and can cleanse and align reproductive organs, sexuality and get creativity flowing
Bloodstone – Known to heal cardiovascular illness and disease. Can help with ancestry links and work
Spirit Quartz – Is great in helping communicate with the spirits of Samhain and releasing old and toxic habits
Lepidolite – Used to appease the fairies that roam during Samhain
Serpentine – Is associated with snakes and aids in remembering past lives. Loki seems to like this stone and may be great to use for him if you work with him during this season
Dragonstone – Dragons are guardians of the earth, spirits of place, and connect us to Mother Nature. Helps say goodbye to the old years and our old selves
Skull shaped Stones – Since skulls are symbols of Samhain, skull shaped stone can help with symbolism during this holiday. They represent the life-death-rebirth cycle, wisdom and our ancestors
Spells and Rituals:
A Samhain Tea (Apple and Hawthorn Berry)
1 apple, sliced
2 Tablespoon dried hawthorn berries (or 4 Tablespoons fresh)
1 cinnamon stick
A pinch of cloves
4 cups water
Honey, to taste (optional)
Combine all ingredients in a small stockpot.
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 10 minutes.
Strain the plant material from the tea, then transfer the tea into two mugs.
Enjoy one for yourself, and leave the other on your table or front porch to nourish any wandering spirits who may pass while the veil between the living and the dead is thinnest.
A Pumpkin Spell for Prosperity
A pumpkin
Some paint
Go to the pumpkin patch (or local store) and select a pumpkin. Or let the pumpkin choose you.
Bring it home and paint prosperity symbols on it – money signs, runes for prosperity or harvest glyphs (whatever means prosperity to you).
Then place by your front door to invite prosperous vibes into your home this Samhain season.
Bonfire Release Purification Spell
Paper
Pen
Source of fire (bonfire, fireplace, candle flame)
Gather your materials and sit by the fire.
Take a few minutes to just listen to the fire crackling.
Gaze into the flames and connect with this powerful element.
Next begin to think about what habit or person you are releasing this Samhain. Think about why you’re purifying your life from this thing or person.
Then write the habit or person down on the piece of paper.
Fold it away from you 3 times.
Hold it in your hands and allow all of the negative thoughts and energies inside of you to “drain” out of you and into the paper.
Then throw it in the fire and say,
“After this Samhain, never again. Never again. I release _________ from my life by the power of the Samhain fire. So, mote it be.”
How to Make a Samhain Altar
Beautiful autumn leaves or flowers that you collect on a nature walk
A candle
A mugwort bundle
A string of rowan beads
A bowl of apples or a small pumpkin
A hawthorn wand or bowl of freshly picked hawthorn berries
A picture of your ancestors
To make an altar, first find a corner of your home or a table surface where you can arrange a few treasures. You don’t need a ton of space. You could use the top of a dresser, the corner of your desk, an unused side table, etc.
After you’ve assembled your altar, spend some time sitting quietly in the space. Light the candle and/or mugwort wand, sip on a cup of Apple & Hawthorn Berry Tea and meditate on this energetically powerful day.
I could find specific written instructions for a crystal grid but I found a video!
Crystal Grid for Samhain
Let's get ready for Samhain and have a great and safe time!

Practical Craft: Setting Up an Altar
So, you've decided to set up an altar or sacred space for your practice. That's great! An altar can be a wonderful space for witchcraft, spirit work, and more.
But where to start?
If you look up pictures of altars online, such as on Tumblr or Instagram, you're likely to see lots of #aesthetic photos full of beautiful arrangements of lit candles, elaborate crystal grids, and expensive-looking statues. Not to mention all the bottles and herbs and incense and stones and bells and lights and tarot cards and oracle cards and and and...
It's a lot, to say the least. I'm one of those people who has a hard time accepting when things aren't totally perfect or up to "standards" (which may or may not continuously shift as I get closer to them, mind). If you're like me, creating an altar space might seem intimidating. You might ask yourself:
"What if it doesn't turn out right?"
"What if the spirit(s) this space is for don't like it?"
"How can I get all the materials that I have to have?"
"Why doesn't my altar look like those pretty pictures online?"
And, if you manage to make your space look that beautiful, you may even ask:
"Why isn't this altar working for me?"
Let's start from the top.
Check out my new post on Ko-Fi, currently exclusive for supporters! For a one-time payment as low as $1, you can receive early and extended access to my work. This one includes a preview of my personal working altar; I'll dive into the specifics of it in another post eventually.

Mabon celebration Release Spell🕯️
You’ll need:
Paper and a pen
Meditate on what no longer serves your growth and happiness, write down any ideas that come to your head. Ponder for a few moments to get any ideas out and on the paper.
After take a moment to meditate on all the ideas on the paper disappearing from your life and body.
Take the paper and tear it up into small pieces, tear it away from you and release yourself from all the negative ideas on the paper. (You can also burn the paper if you like fire and have a fire safety container an area)
After everything is done, take a moment to breathe out all the negative energy and ideas, and breathe in all the positive new ones
Happy Mabon everyone! 🍂🕯️

Spirit/Entity House Rules
This can be applied to deities, entities, spirits, or just any other entity you work with. I like to call these contracts but they are more of just a general house-rule list that can help make you more comfortable in a spirit-working relationship or even to keep you safe. You need to feel safe and secure when working with any entity or spirit or it will not be a productive relationship and could do more harm than good. Most of these house rules can help with that.
Edit or adapt them as you will, these are just suggestions.
"no entity is allowed to follow me or watch me in the bathroom while showering, when naked, or when using the toilet" - this is a good boundary to have if you generally need your alone time lol
"No entity is allowed in my space without my and [trusted spirit/entity]'s express permission"
"no entity is allowed to trick me and send me tests that damage or interfere negatively with my mental, emotional, physical, psychological, or spiritual well-being"
"No entity is allowed to lie to me under any circumstances"
"No entity, spirit, or deity is allowed to touch me without my express permission"
"No bringing any friends into my space without my express permission"
"All entities who desire to enter my space must abide by my boundaries, rules, and this contract"
"All entities in my space must always uphold my highest good until my final breath"
"No entity is allowed to mess with my children, trick them, or interfere with them. If you are going to be around them, dull down your energy so to not startle my children"
"No entity, deity, or spirit is allowed to mess with or interfere with my pets or animals unless i give my express permission"
"No entity is allowed to mess with or interfere with my family without my express permission"
"No opening portals in my space under any circumstances"
I personally will take a pendulum or use clairaudience to ask my spirit guides, deities, etc if they agree to the terms and conditions of the house rules and then like, sign their name at the bottom of the paper i write it all down on. If a spirit or entity says "no", then it may just be one of the rules they don't agree with. Take a minute and ask them why they don't agree with it and then maybe edit it to be more agreeable to both you and the entity in question.

Deflector Shield
A Shielding and Protection Spell to deflect negativity, other spells, and other negative things from you
-For this spell, a source of energy is required. I made a small sachet/ charm that I carry with me and recharge and redo as often as I need to. The instructions for that will be included. So the sachet is the first portion of the spell.-
Part One- The Sachet and Power Source
What You’ll Need (For the sachet and energy source)
A crystal (I recommend clear quartz, It is what I used, and is generally a wonderful gem to use for energy work purposes.)
A protective herb. (I used Basil, two full leaves, as always because it rocks. And sweet basil smells awesome.) Though other protective herbs work.
A small piece of white cloth, large enough to hold the gem and herb.
Thread of any color, to tie the sachet together.
What To Do (Charging the energy source!)
Start with charging your crystal. I set mine on my altar for two weeks, lit a candle next to it every day for at least a half hour, opened the curtains so that both moon and sunlight could reach it, and as often as I could, poured some of my own energy and intent for protection into the crystal itself.
Make the sachet by placing the cloth flat, then the herbs you’ve chosen (this is why leaves are easier, as they will wrap up around the crystal, though leaves are not necessary. Chopped works just as well, or even sprigs) followed by the crystal.
Tie up the bundle, closing it with the string or thread. Make it portable if you can.
Carry it in your pocket or purse, or wear it as a necklace. Visualize your connection to it. It is a source of energy you can tap into, turn on and off as you need to.
Repeat as necessary. If you feel there is no energy left in the bundle, remake it, or open it and replace the herbs, cleanse and recharge the crystal. Wash the cloth or get a new piece.
Part Two- Arming Your Shield
-Now we come to the turning on and activating the shield. If you’ve never made an energy shield, or worked with forming energy, I recommend basic energy work before doing this. It can be taxing, and rather exhausting stuff.-
What You’ll Need
Yourself, your energy, other energy you can manipulate or Inversely the aforementioned made and charged sachet
What To Do
First you must connect to the energy source you are using. Is it your own energy? The sun? The moon? Or a source like the charged sachet you made?
Visualize if you will, a string of light connecting you to the energy source, or other similar form of connection to it. Next, you’re going to activate the shield. Or form it, if you’ve done this sort of thing before.
When you connect to your energy source, you should feel it. In some cases it will be obvious (i.e. the warmth of the sun on your skin, the light from the moon and stars, etc.) other times it will take effort to feel this connection.
Once you do, let if flow into you. Now that you’ve got control of the energy, visualize it forming into a shield. If you’re using external energy (again using the sun example) visualize that warmth coating your body, forming a layer of light around you, like an aura just above your skin.
If you’re using a sachet or other similar energy source, pull the energy from it slowly, weaving a web around yourself in the same manner as the above, forming a layer around your entire body.
Visualize this shield as something you can turn on and off. Something that will come from the sachet, or the sun, or other energy source as you need it. (hence the carrying of the sachet!)
When it is ‘on’ or ‘active’ visualize it as a layer of pulsating light that reflects things you find negative and harmful away.
this may take several attempts, especially if you’ve never really done energy work before. You can shape the shield however you need to, be it into something over a specific area of your body, a full body aura-like shield, or a dome to encompass those close to you. Though this can be extremely taxing!
Best of Luck and Happy Casting Witches!

Disclaimer- the above is one of my personal methods for shielding, it may not work for everyone!

Things to put in your book of shadows
Of course, only put in your book of shadows/grimoire what you want. If you don't want to put certain subjects in your book then that's fine. It's your book, utilize it how you want. This is just a masterlist of ideas that I've put together. Feel free to add anything else to the list that I may have missed, because there's absolutely no way I included everything.
And for the love of all the gods, if you come across a closed entity or practice, don't try to work with the entity or practice if you're not already part of that group or tradition. You can research it but don't practice it.

Low Energy Witchcraft
I'm neurodivergent and i experience really intense burnout. I get to a point where I struggle to even get out of bed, take my meds, remember to drink water, let alone practice. But, when I want to practice i have a list of things i can usually do. Everyone's experiences with burn out/low energy are different so this list may not apply to you, and that's okay. Take what resonates, leave what doesn't and i hope you enjoy my silly little list :)
create a playlist and infuse it with an intention. eg, a money spell playlist filled with songs about wealth.
draw sigils with soap when in the shower. (you can also use a wet wipe if you can't shower)
found some juice? give it a little shake and use the ingredients as a spell.
have food that has grains as ingredients? wow! an abundance spell!
the classic add intention to your tea and coffee.
bind your hair. for me with is as simple as putting my hair in a ponytail.
watch a witchy video. while not technically practising witchcraft, sometimes all you need is to sit back and relax to connect with your practice.
when I have a decent amount of energy I'll grab a large pillar candle and carve sigils into it. I use it as a long-term spell; all I have to do to activate it is light the candle. I like to light one of these spell candles when I'm having a bad day.
if you're religious, pray. Even if you're lying in bed. Even if you haven't showered in a week. If it makes you happy and you can, do it
burn some insence! it smells good, you don't have to really worry about forgetting about it, it's good for cleansing. it's great!
take a nap with some crystals. any restorative crystals or calming crystals work great! just make sure that they aren't geodes or roughs. i'd hate for you to hurt yourself while sleeping.
if you don't have any crystals for your nap, set an intention instead. please let yourself rest.
It's important to remember that you're allowed to take breaks from your craft. If you're forcing yourself to practice when you have no energy because "that's what a good witch would do!" then you're probably going to make your situation worse. it's a great way to fall out of love with witchcraft. give yourself some grace. rest is infinitely more important than 1 full moon, 1 new moon, or missing your daily/weekly/monthly cleanse. You aren't a bad person if you don't pull your morning tarot card or check the astrology forecast for today. and you aren't a bad person if you miss your daily prayer. take care of yourself. your health is WAY more important than your craft. Go get a drink of water and take care of yourself <3

Energy Work Basics
Conceptualization vs. Visualization
Energetic Awareness
Energetic Constructs
The Subtle Body
The Wellsource
What is an anchor?
An anchor is an object that a spell (see construct) is housed within and sustained by. There are several ways an object can be anchored; short term, in spells that involve burning or destroying the anchor during or after the working to release a wave of energy (projection); moderate duration, in which spells have a decided end and is programmed to diffuse or be released; and long term, most optimally used for wards, these projections are anchored into something that sustains the construct for as long as possible.
Why is anchoring important?
All magic involves a projection or transference of energy, even if subconsciously. When energy is moving it is important to be able to sustain it and keep it from diffusing into the environment and/or to sustain its properties in lieu of ambient energies. Even if the timeframe of the working is very short, energetic half-lives can be significantly shorter depending on the composition. During any working, even with divinity, it is wise to use an anchor as an intermediary for the working so that nothing is altered or lost in transference. A good example of anchors that aren’t widely done consciously are divination tools. When a practitioner uses a pendulum, it is common for it to be cleansed and then programmed. Since the working is on the pendulum itself, it becomes an anchor. The same goes for tarot and most other forms of divination. These anchors are charged and maintained while they are being used.
How to anchor effectively
When choosing an anchor for a spell it is important to take the timeframe of the working into account. Paper, wood and other destroyable non-conductive materials are great for short term spells. These anchors can be destroyed to release the construct to do what it was designed to do before quickly dissipating. Sigilwork can be a great example of this. Iron and copper make for great anchors for keeping the construct from interacting with environmental properties, but do not do well with sustaining it energetically, because of this they are best when housing spiritual entities. Piezoelectric materials make the best anchors for long term spells. Even under atmospheric pressure, they release the most minute energy; which, is more than enough to sustain a construct. Quartz is among the best anchors that can be used, which is why it is commonly thought of as being useful in any working.
Some anchors can also be used to filter energies or modify their properties. Glass, gold, and silver are good examples of this. They each take energies that they hold or absorb and their inherent energies react with them. Glass, however, is the easier to program.

⁺˚*☾ Ways to start with a Pendulum ☽*˚⁺
bonding, learning, vetting, etc…
❶ Acquiring a pendulum
At its simplest, a pendulum is a weighted object on something stringlike that can swing in multiple directions. They’re fairly common online and in spiritual shops, so you can buy one for yourself, but you can very easily make one. Using a necklace with a weighted pendant is a great option especially if you’re not open about practicing! I have “proper” pendulums, but if I’m out of the house I use my jewelry so both have their places either way!
❷ Cleansing and Charging
Cleansing and charging your pendulum won’t really look any different to how your cleanse and charge other tools, if you have a preferred method then do that! Otherwise here’s a list to look into: water cleansing, salt cleansing, selenite cleansing & charging, energy cleansing, elemental & weather cleansing, and soon on. (As always make sure the materials are safe with the method you chose, in particular not all metals and crystals are good in salt and water.)
I don’t use crystals a lot in my practice but personally I use selenite and salt the most for cleansing and charging, it’s just the easiest for me especially when I’m low on energy. On top of that I do my best to charge everything under the full moon!
❸ Bonding
Now that you’ve gotten rid of that old stinky energy it’s time to mesh it with your own brand of spiritual stank ( /pos). If you can wear your pendulum as jewelry that’s a great way to bond with it, meditate with it, sleep with in under your pillow or next to you. Once you do this you can also do things like naming/asking your pendulums name if that’s something you want to do! I haven’t done that but most people I know either have it spell out a name, or pick from a list until it says yes.
❹ Interviewing
This will vary from person to person depending on your practice and if this pendulum is for general use or dedicated to a certain entity. Interview it similar to how you would with a deck, but with yes/no questions primarily (with pendulums you can do more than that, especially with a pendulum board/mat that has lots of options of it, do what’s comfortable for you and don’t overwhelm yourself with too much at once!)
If this pendulum is going to be dedicated to someone specific, includes questions about if it’s okay to use the pendulum for other purposes, if they want it kept on their altar, things like that.
❺ Start using it
Time to start with it! This definitely overlaps with the last part. Ask it to show you yes and no, or alternatively you can set which way is yes or no (which might take a little more effort). Get a feel for other directions and movements that might be things like “maybe” “rephrase” “not comfortable answering” which you can also confirm by asking.
❻ Practice vetting (yourself)
If you’re going to be using your pendulum for anything entity communication related, then practicing vetting will be an important tool! Perfect and simple way to start practicing this is my vetting yourself, ask questions about facts about you, include ones that will be correct and incorrect. You can ask about your past, your appearance, family, friends, work, ect.
From there keep learning and practicing! Find what works for you, it helps to keep notes of readings to refer back to, you can also note general feelings and experiences not just answers to questions.
