“I’m not good at this. I was told paper was precious, and yet I’ve scattered the ground with multiple scraps of parchment both used and yet unusable. If anything, it is a testament to my displacement that my language feels clumsy to write on books built for other’s script. Speaking of my culture has even begun to feel sluggish coming from my own mouth.

Why am I doing this? Holding a pen after this long; that is not the purpose of my coming. Is it the way they looked at me and spoke to me? Did it unnerve me so that I felt I had to blend in harder? If they are on to me that quickly, I doubt a couple of scrawled pieces of regrets will appease them. I felt that knawing feeling in my temple, the desire for knowing what I could not.

I had to trust that feeling. It was the impetus of my arrival here, and it had never led me astray before. I knew better than to trust honeyed words. If they knew my true intentions, I’m sure they would quickly switch their tone. Unless, of course, they were lying to me about their discontent. Thats why I need to know, so I can clear away the shadow over their intents. If need be, I could always-“

Straga

"Oh, him? He's a Struln, as far as I'm aware."

"That one doesn't talk to anyone. He does what you tell him to do, though."

"He eats too much of my damn food. I told him off about it once and he stopped, so at least he listens."

"Don't talk to me about the Gitch."

"I think he brings a unique perspective. Just because he's not a Goloin doesn't mean we shouldn't treat him like one."

Yaiyo

"HELLO! HELLO! And welcome to Yaiyomelayaiyo Yaiyo-Yaiyo-Yaiyo's Wonderous Emporium opened for the very first time RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW, with absolutely no similarity or affiliation with the shop that popped up twenty feet that way one week ago!"

The figure doubles over, hunching slightly, voice falling away from its mercantile falsetto.

"They gone? Phew. Most humans pay very little attention to what type of creature you are so long as you're a 'helpful shopkeep.' Like you're categorized as a different lifeform so long as you can pass them a potion or two and are not VISIBLY Goloin. So I got the big hat, my big shroud, and an even bigger smile to let them know that I am 100% in no way a threat whiiiiiile passing information about where they're headed, how armed they are and how mean they look back to the village. Arkat should be setting up an ambush up ahead. This crowd looked a lot weaker than the last few, and weak adventurers mean very VERY easy loot.

Please to meet you by the way! You can call me Yaiyo. Or Yaiyo-Yaiyo for short. I'm set up to be the village elder someday! Most of my words I've stolen from the books humans trade with us, best to speak with a silver tongue to keep it attached to my body or something like that.

If anyone asks, say as loudly as possible that I robbed you blind!"

The diminutive creature lifts a paltrop, what is objectively speaking, the world's worst currency. Sharp, bladed on all sides and resembling the egg of some sort of sea-creature this legal tender could best be compared to a weapon.

"A weapon above any other! Metaphorically, and also quite literally. These things hurt to step on."

Arkat

You want to know about me? I'm a hunter by trade, well at least I was. The lich needed more Goloins in his army and I was good with a bow. So I went from hunting for food for my village to hunting Boomies. On top of that I get to work with the Struln. Most of them call me Archer but that’s only because they can’t pronounce my name. If it's not obvious, I'm not a fan of my job.

When I’m not being bossed around by the Struln I’m mostly getting into trouble with my buddy Manentat. We like to sneak off and try to get some loot on our own. It never ends well but I’ll never say that the time is not well spent.

If I had to describe myself in one word I would say ‘sharp’. I like to act quick and be decisive. Some people say that I’m a little too quick to act, but if it gets the job done then they can’t complain, right? Hope that answered your question!

Gartrinus

Oh Stars, where do I begin to cover everything?

There's very few of my kind that live in St. Selene, so everything I once learned about Goloin history had been from my parents or in the footnotes of history books, written with academic distancing and veiled disdain.

So when I had the opportunity to make a penpal friend, one actually from The Mountain, I was overjoyed! Straga's letters were always brief, but his words contained a quiet passion, a keen eye that saw things for what they were. I'm no ranger or journeyman - I've dedicated my adulthood to studying textiles and tailoring. But to meet Straga in person and to visit the place Goloins call their ancestral home… I became an anthropologist.

Saying farewell to Taranasaya and Katrius, my mother and father, was difficult. Getting permission from my academic mentor, Tzarlemender, was even more difficult. By comparison I thought my time at The Mountain was to be easy.

It was not. Joyful, yes. Heart-rending, yes. Incredibly dangerous, oh goodness yes.

All I could offer the courageous Goloins of The Mountain was my sewing supplies, a beginner's course in Absenphysics, and what little wit I could scrounge together. Ah, but now is not the time to go into the details.

Instead, I'll leave you with this thought: To what lengths would you go to protect a community and their history? Would you pick up a pen, or a sword? Could you draw blood over it?

I wasn't prepared to answer that at the time. By the time our story ends, I hope you know your own answer.

This is their story; the story of the people beneath the mountain. We've worked super hard on it, and we're excited to share it! It drops on August 15th on the Stabbyness Youtube channel!
