Truly one of the oddest feelings is reading a fic that is so out of character but the writing and plot is so compelling. Like yeah I came here for the characters but yeah you know what I will read your original novel with the serial numbers plastered on
#honestly thats sort of all fanfic for me#some more than others though of course#but i dont think ive ever actually really liked a fanfic for its interpretation of canon at all#theres been some that were closer. but more i liked the story and it was less obviously out of character so easier to ignore#since mischaracterisation or bad understanding of canon pisses me off i do pretend its completely different#ive even gone to the extend of using 'profanity replacer' to change all the names#in two different fandoms#though itll still be a bit annoying cause theyll reference stuff from canon#so even with the different names its still like. they wouldnt say that you fucking idiot#actually i got into reading fanfic for stuff i dont know anything about cause of this#though after reading so much for the same pairing cause it was the only one i could find i liked the dynamic and concept#i sort of got a feel for whats out of character anyway even though i only looked at a bit of canon dislogue

hanahaki is a genuinly interesting concept that probably has a lot of potential, but i cant buy all those getting hanahaki for best friends thing, like maybe once or twice its alright, and theres ways you can spin it to be believable and work with the characterisation, but after reading a few it becomes more like the authors just want to shove the trope and ship together regardless of characterisation, there arent that many ways you can do it well before it gets generic
#i keep meaning to make a post on fandom shipping best friends#also on the obsession with childhood friends though thats got nothing to do with this#the only one i can think of having read where they werent already close friends was pairing i didnt actually ship romanticslly#only there was literally no platonic fics it was all romantic#it was decently written if you just gobwith the romantic premise and more convincing but the end was bad and ridiculously soppy#there would be more potential for people who are less close or have actual reason to believe itd actually be impossible#not the contrived reasons they come up with. which make sense a bit but dont go that far#actually id been thinking about an idea for a hanahaki fic even though i never get around to writing anything#but it was with a best friends ship and badicslly as the idea developed it kept getting further and further from hanahaki#like id made it repressed feelings in general cause id thought it worked better with thr character to tell a story#but then i wasnt sure thatd work too well as a story either so i made it a poisoning as part of a private doctor scam#i was originally thinking about it cause hanahaki sounds like an actual cool concept#but then mine sort of ended up getting rid of all the dramatic emotional appeal anyway#could still be a fun fanfic of i actually bothered to write it#but to be honest i dont know id even be able to actually write#reading bad fanfic usually makes me confident cause even i could obviously do so much better#but after seeing so much bad writing its the norm i probably wouldnt manage better#and all that write bad advice is insufferable bullshit#like if you start bad and edit it alright#but publish bad? why would i want to create a story if i dont even think its goid#good#that advice is literally so fucking stupid#but mostly i just cant be bothered

so annoying when fanfic characters are constantly saying stuff like 'gods i hate it' or whatever fantasy equivalent of gods. normal people dont even say 'god i hate it', certainly not that much, its an annoying jarring american speech pattern, and the fantasy versions are just cringe and not even worldbuilding, cause no one would actually talk like that

this specific way of having terrible writing is actually so baffling how people do it at all, let alone how its so common. i dont get how people would think normal use of names and pronouns sounds repetitive at all, but how can you not see this is so repetitive, and sounds so much worse??? we dont need the irrelevent descriptions which stand out more cause theyve got nothing to do with the scene, how do you think hair colour sounds more natural than names and pronouns, which are meant for that and automatically sound neutral. and like in this case, the same word is repeated 4 times in the excert but a name only once out of two characters, and a pronoun only twice, it is actually repetitive. at least 'man' is fairly background unlike hair colour, but you still cant repeat it as much as names and pronouns, definitely not more.
#the last one in red isnt actually an epiphet theres nothing wrong with that usage#it just stands out and sounds clunky cause the same words repeated so much before#the first one should just be a name#the third one should be a pronoun#since its completely clear from context it isnt his own waiste#and pronouns are supposed to be repreated it doesnt sound weird#the second is the most defencible epiphet but still could use a name and less clubky wording#that fics also insufferably sappy and out of character and pathetic#like theres a limit before it just gets annoying
