“We need to talk about what happened last night.”

Sitting at the kitchen table eating strawberries, Cindy asks archly, “Do we?”

Cisco nods gravely, holding onto Milo.  "We do.“  The Welsh terrier pup gnaws on his Star Trek shirt, but Cisco doesn’t pry it out of his mouth.  "We adopted a dog.”

Cindy takes another bite of a strawberry, chewing slowly, evidently waiting for him to say more.  When he doesn’t, she supplies, “Is there more?”

“We adopted a *dog,*” Cisco repeats, in a tone of voice he hopes is clarifying, but still Cindy fixes him with casual interest, unfazed.  "I’m not ready to be a dad,“ he says finally.

“Well.”  Cindy stands and says, “You’re more than welcome to take him home.”  Cisco blinks, startled that it’s that easy – it’s *that* easy? – when Cindy adds warningly, “But if you do, he’ll age.  A lot.”

Cisco blows out a breath.  "Because he’s from a higher frequency world,“ he realizes, rubbing his forehead with one hand and cradling Milo with the other.  "Shoot.”

“We can rehome him,” Cindy says, reaching out and scooping up Milo, and Cisco instantly misses the puppy warmth against him, “but he was old.  Bringing him here was the only way to keep him alive.”  She presses a kiss to Milo’s head, her affection palpable, and a story begins to unfold in Cisco’s mind.

“So we brought him here to reverse-age him,” he surmises.  "High-frequency to low-frequency.“

"Mmhm.”  Tucking Milo under her chin, Cindy closes her eyes.  "He belonged – he belongs to a close friend,“ she reroutes.  "We call him ‘The Accelerated Man.’”

“The purple lightning guy?”

Cindy nods.

“He seemed upset.”

“Milo didn’t belong to A.M.”  She holds out the puppy, looking it eye-to-eye, like she’s trying to read something there.  "His first owner was a mutual friend of ours.  He … we were more than friends.“

"Ah.”  Stepping carefully onto the conversational thin ice, Cisco prompts, “And he is … no longer in the picture?”

Cindy’s tone hardens and she looks away.  "He was killed by Abra Kadabra.“

Cisco exhales slowly.  The tremble in Cindy’s shoulders is subtle, but still abundantly clear to him.  He can feel it, even from a distance.  "I see.”

Turning to him, Cindy repeats stoically, “We can rehome him.  I just –”  Her eyes mist and she looks away for a moment, recomposing and turning to him with a firm, “Milo is all I have left of him.  A.M. feels the same way.”

*And we couldn’t let him die,* she doesn’t need to say.  Stepping forward, carefully wrapping his arms around her and Milo, Cisco observes, “He is awfully cute.”

Cindy leans against him, Milo cradled between them.  "I didn’t want to bring you into this.“

"I’m glad you did.”  She looks up at him, judging sincerity, but he repeats firmly, “Cindy.  I’m *glad* you saved him.”  Then, grinning, he adds, “We adopted a dog.”

She smiles, and even though it’s a little fragile around the edges, it doesn’t break, and Cisco knows it’s going to be okay when she repeats, “We adopted a dog.”
