How to make a dj demo mixtape - live vs software
How to make a mixtape? there are two ways of making a mixtape. doing it live and doing it in a software program. in this video I'll dive into: how to make a mixtape live versus making a DJ demo in software. the up and down sides of both methods and some mixing techniques for DAWs. Of course the cassette tape is a joke, but do you know what a cassette tape has to do with a pencil? for the guys that grew up with a cassette tape they probably already know, but if you don't, stick around to the end I'll tell you. let's take it away. for those who are new: my name is Dexxter Clark and I do reviews vlogs and tutorials about DJing and producing. I want to give a special shout out in this video to my patreon supporters. of course everyone can make a mixtape just a bunch of songs in a sequence on a CD or a digital file but, it started out as a tape as the name mixtape. a DJ mixtape has three purposes first of all showing a few mixing skills second of all showing of your track selection skills and third of all understanding a flow of a DJ set. for both methods, so mixing it live or doing it in software, you and need to have a proper track selection. what I'd like to do is when I'm practicing and I notice that I have a run of good songs (songs that are a good fit together) I make a playlist out of that in Rekordbox. I can use that playlist later in one of my DJ sets or I can make a mixtape out of those songs. but also Rekordbox can give you suggestions. I made a special video about related tracks in Rekordbox and track matches in Rekordbox I will put them down in the description below and I'll put one of the videos in a cart above. but I won't go into detail about track selection in this video. the first method that I'm talking about is recording a live set and that can be from your bedroom for example. a live mixtape is made by a real human being with real human emotions with real DJ equipment in a kind of live situation you have the most connection with your mix and your music and transitions, so I think you can hear that in terms of personality and warmth of the mix. the computer mix can feel dead and too perfect, you miss that personal element. I think there is one big big downside to making a mixtape live, is that when you have a 50 song mix a new screw-up with number 49, you have to do it all over again. for a live mix I found it really useful to make a playlist in Rekordbox then I'll do a trial run with all those tracks in Rekordbox and try to see where it is a handy fit to mix in and mix out. that I write down and also the kind of transition I want to use between those songs. now record. the record function in Rekordbox can maybe help you with that. but that works only with certain DJ controllers from Pioneer and certain Pioneer devices like the CDJ 2000 nexus. but there's also a device in the form factor of a cassette tape from Reloop. really funny for making mixtapes if you're super good you can maybe even do it in one run. or don't write anything down and improvise everything. but I think for the most of us we have to do it a couple of times. then mixing in software and that's a bit controversial, because a lot of DJ's consider it cheating and I'm really curious if you think it's cheating. let me know in the comments below. And I like to know also why you think it's cheating and how many people think it is cheating and how many people don't think it's cheating. with software you can do much more trickery and cool stuff. A multiple song mashup for example it's no problem at all in software. also you can do much more sound effects like bass drops and risers for example. the possibilities are pretty much endless dedicated mix software would be quicker than a DAW, but on the other hand with a DAW you can do everything. I've tried Mashup by Mixed In Key, but the problem was when I tried it there was a bug in the software that caused the tracks to run out of sync but when editing the songs and editing the mix then the tracks are in sync. maybe they fixed it in the meantime. there are two approaches: the first one is for every song that you have in your mix you make a new track and the other one is you have two tracks and you mix between those two tracks I think the two-track approach is faster and you're using less system resources you only have two tracks with plugins instead of 40 or 30 some mixing techniques in DAWs are: of course the volume fade and of course the high and the low cut filters. you can use other effects like reverb delay and echo like it would do on a DJM mixer. use sidechain ducking from one track on the other. you can even automate the input level so the effect increases over time. you can even repeat certain sections you can make buildup that way and if you place a riser under that you have the perfect tension builder. just take certain sections of the song. cut the song up and only use the parts you like. if you make a template in your DAW you only have to set it up once and reuse it for your next mixtape. do you have DAW mixing tips for other DJ's let us know in the comments below. I'll find Logic not very useful for making mixtapes, because you need to adjust the tempo of your songs that you're mixing, and in Logic that is a destructive edit you can't undo Ableton and Studio One are much more suited for the job. snapping and aligning to the grid is much easier in both software packages. also adjusting the tempo has to be easy and ramping up the tempo that's possible in Studio One in Ableton Live. I made step-by-step tutorials for Ableton Logic and Studio One you can find the links to those videos in the description below if you want to release your mixtape you can do that on soundcloud and on Mixcloud I think that Mixcloud is more suited for a job although SoundCloud is more popular. I had some troubles in the past that SoundCloud deletes my mixtape because of copyright issues. also we don't know how long that SoundCloud is gonna be around. Mixcloud has struck a deal with licensees to avoid that copyright problem. why SoundCloud couldn't do that I don't know but how about that cassette tape and that pencil you may know that a cassette tape has two sides. side A and side B and when side A is full, you flip it around and you go to side B. when side B is full, you go to the side A. but if you don't want to rewind your cassette tape in your cassette player, you can use a pencil for that in the gears you stick it and then you can rewind the tape

How to Make a Demo Tape : Why You Need a Demo Tape
Hey! My name is Jerimae Yoder and I am with Expert Village. Today I am going to be talking about demo tape making and making your best demo possible with the means that you have. I was a musician and I am a musician. I have been making demo tapes for about 10 years which then got me signed to a national distribution deal with an Indian label. So making a demo tape is really important to take you to the next label in your musicality and reaching the audience that you believe you need to reach. One of the things that I learned early on in making a demo tape is that nobody wants to listen to junk. So don't spend your time making something that you don't want anybody else to hear. Make it the best that you possibly can. With the instrumentation you have, the friends that you have and even after that possibly take it to the next level in hiring people to help you get better at what you do and make it sound even better. Your demo is who you are so you've got to make it rock. They will know you by your demo. You go to MySpace, you go to these other websites. There are so many people out there doing music and you can hear about anything under the sun now with th4e click of a button. So you have to be better than anybody else. Your demo has to rock. Narrow down with what you want to do with your demo. In other words do you just want to get a demo out for your friends and family to listen to. Do you want to make a 4 or 5 song EP that you can sell at your shows? Do you want to necessarily get this to an A&R rep at a record label, an artist and repata rep at a record label because all three of those things you are going to accomplish different things with the first family and friends probably doesn't have to be the best. It is going to be pretty good and you want to make it as good as you possibly can but it doesn't have to be national quality. If you are going to get to an AR rep, man it's got to rock. But man I am telling you music is about emotions, music is about us inside getting out and if it is not sonically there, it's got going to hit them the way that the song really needs to hit them for them to go wow, I love these guys and I want to sign them to a national deal. So you got to make it the best you possibly can and we are going talk about this in a just a second here. We are going to go through a couple of different things, home recordings, going to studio and recording, different methods of recording and different instruments and things like that.

Recording Rap & Hip-Hop Music : How to Produce a Rap Music Demo
Now, when it comes to putting your demo together the main keys are this. First off, you want to get everything that you have, but you want to grab your hottest stuff. But, at the same time this is a demo so you want to keep everybody in mind. All the type of people who will listen to this, will hear this. You know, you got to think of things that can be played on radio. Things that are appealing to the younger crowd, older crowds, pretty much everybody. I mean your demo is one of the most important things because like they say, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression." So, you want to put all of your best quality material into your demo. When it comes to putting it together make sure you sit down and take your time with it and like I said, don't just put what you think is hot, but put what you think that, you know what I mean, the world and everybody else, the people who will be listening to your demo will believe is hot. I mean your demo is one of the most important things that is going to get you in the door of the industry, of a label, of a record deal. So, don't just go, you know throwing some old whackness over a tape and sending it out there. Make sure your sound is quality. Make sure your lyrics are quality. Make sure you threw a variety and some versatility on your demo and give them a little bit of everything that you have to offer. And that's how you put together a good demo.
