A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid My rating: 3 of 5 stars i have mixed feelings about this book, on the one hand i really enjoyed the gothic setting, the pacing and what the book had to say about gender politics. I thought the revelation about the book at the centre or this novel was quite obvious and I myself had guessed it about 30% of the way into the book, but I still liked the reveal. I thought Effy’s mental state was written well there were times where I wasn’t sure if she was actually seeing things or if her mind was messing with her. I also liked Preston, which actually brings me to the things about the book that I didn’t like, Effy’s racism that she likes to pretend isn’t racism, but like just because you acknowledge that your thoughts and opinions are rooted in racism doesn’t make them not racist you know, she’ll say stuff like “i didn’t want to think like a racist” (I’m paraphrasing here) but then go on to have those racist thoughts anyways. She does grow and learn a but through the book but I’m not sure that its because her views have changed as a whole or if its just because she now loves someone from a different country you know? I think Effy is not supposed to be viewed as racist, just ignorant but I don’t think the author does a good job of portraying this so it really just come across like she’s casually racist and then falls in love so she’s no longer racist??? Weird

I thought the whole women can’t study literature because they’re too stupid but they can study architecture thing to be very bizarre, like surely if you’re smart enough to get into university you should be able to study whatever you want, if they had banned women entirely it would at least make logical sexist sense but women are allowed to study in this world…just not literature? very bizarre, and then she’s chosen to redesign this old house but she’s a failing first year? and yeah they address this in the end but it is very strange that she didn’t consider this herself you know. I enjoyed the book for what it was and I’d be willing to read this author again but I don’t think I’ll be putting it on any best or worst of lists anytime soon. View all my reviews

it's the way jean probably couldn't care less about neil and andrew being a couple and yet he describes andreil like he's watching a work of art unfold in front of his very eyes, like they truly are the IT couple they're iconic they're the moment
