Plitvice
Where we stayed:
Plitvice Hotel (Booking.com)
Pros: The room was super clean and the location is perfect! They extend your tickets (250kn per person) for the days you’re staying so the rent isn’t that high if you take that and free breakfast into account. Try to get a room that doesn’t face the park if you’re going in the summer. They have luggage rooms if you plan on catching an evening bus like us.
Cons: There is no air-conditioning so staying indoors during the day is impossible with windows closed. The breakfast isn’t very good, though there are hardly any better options in and around the area.
Where we ate:
Plitvice Hotel Dinner was absolutely horrible. I really wish I had some snacks in the room so I could avoid this. Breakfast was okay though we really filled up since there aren’t many restaurants and the ones that exist are really pricey (including this one).
Poljana The fried chicken with rice was quite tasty. Pago juices aren’t bad either.
Buffet Labudovac This one is near port 3. We had the fried chicken here too though they served fries with it instead of rice.
Pro Tip: Just bring some cup noodles and snacks that you’d like to eat. The park is really expensive and the food isn’t great. Oh and have the Double Raspberry Magnum if you see the Algida (Kwality Walls) stall anywhere. You’re Welcome :)
Where we went:
Day 1: Route K & E - better get shoes/sandals you can hike in if you plan to get on the K route. We started in the wrong direction (started walking from port 2) somehow and felt like we were lost after walking for almost 4 hours. It basically takes you along the lakes but through the forest. We eventually turned around and found a shortcut to go down to the wooden path (Route E) and then completed that. Since the hotel was so close to the park, we came back in the evening for a stroll.

Day 2: Route B - this day was much better since we didn’t get lost! Trails were clearly marked all along. The boat ride from port 3 to port 2 has a really long waiting line get an umbrella or a hat as it gets very sunny.

Zagreb
Where we stayed:
Cool Studio Saraga (Airbnb)
Pros: The room was super clean, looked good and had a pretty well stocked kitchen. The location is great and the hosts are lovely and really helpful.
Cons: It’s on the 3rd floor and without lifts and we found the bed a bit too soft for our liking. There was no washing machine (though it wasn’t a problem for us as it was our first stop)
Where we ate:
Mc Donald’s Yup, our first meal was at a Mc Donald’s! It was 11pm by the time we could step out for food and it was the only thing open. Wasn’t too bad though.
Mlinar The pizzas and sandwiches are pretty decent for the price and we could eat them while on the move so this was convenience food. Pro tip: There was a woman selling strawberries on the opposite corner which were the best I’ve ever had!

Le Bistro Esplanade This was our first proper meal and we just bumped into it while walking out of the botanical gardens. It’s a 2019 Michellin Star restaurant. The food was amazing (menu changes often so you may not find what we had). It’s famous for its štrukli though we didn’t love it as much as their other food.

Submarine Burger The best thing ever! We ate here two days in a row and it was great both times. get the one with three types of mini burgers or order the classic.

Vincek Slastičarnica (Gelatario) Their Jaffa (dark chocolate and orange) flavour is mind blowing although the Wild Berries was also delicious.

Where we went:
Day 1: We went to the Nikola Tesla Museum and the Botanical Garden (do look for a plant called Black Pearl, it pops it’s seeds into the air and makes little popping sounds) after which we just roamed around the streets near our airbnb.

Day 2: We walked by the Funicular and up to the Lotrščak Tower and then on to St Mark’s Church (you can’t go in). The Museum of Broken Relationships was also close by but we decided to skip it. We then headed towards the Stone Gate (it was nothing special) on our way to the Zagreb Cathedral (which was really beautiful).

Day 3: We went to Dolac market and bought some souvenirs, fruits and cured meats and cheeses to make a salad.
