new thing I learned today: humans intentionally introduced a bunch of trout to rivers in Chile in the early 1900s and messed up the ecosystem so fly fisher people could go play fish or something. which sucks. then later they found out that the trout really like eating these small endemic freshwater hermit-crab-cousin guys called Aegla. so there was a proposal in the 1970s to introduce Aegla into California to screw up THAT ecosystem, so fisher people could go play fish even more over there. but then it turned out that the normally detritovore Aegla will absolutely 100% just turn into a predator and eat the baby trout if given half a chance. this could have turned out really bad, but luckily crabs can do whatever they want, including burrowing into the invasive trout nests to eat their eggs. I'm proud of them

wanna make it clear that there is no mainstream culture pressure for cis people to be trans men/women however there IS a cultural pressure, both mainstream and subcultural, for nonbinary people to be binary. and you know what really fucking sucks? when you are starting to explore your gender as a nonbinary person and every single thing you do is scrutinized as proof of you either being a cis person going through a phase or a binary trans egg going through a phase.

when binary people get to have a "gender" and "pronouns" but nonbinary people only ever get to have a "gender identity" and "preferred pronouns". there's a bitter little note of invalidation there, so subtle that people are taken aback if you try to point it out. as though our genders are less real, our language unserious. like we're children playing pretend or some shit.

the public bathrooms at a broadway theatre i went to recently had signs saying something along the lines of “use whatever bathroom fits your gender identity” which is great, but there was a men bathroom and a women’s bathroom. What are nonbinary people (or people who just want to use a gender neutral bathroom for whatever reason) supposed to do?

this is exorsexism.

this is one of the most performative kinds of allyship i'm seeing all over the place right now and i'm so tired of seeing binary trans people praise this.

right up there with "anyone who feels like they belong in the women's/men's bathroom should go there", like, i don't belong in either, i just literally have nowhere else to go.

For me the key characteristic of autism is intensity. My body awareness is inescapable. My senses have powerful sway over my consciousness. My emotions are strong. My thoughts are intricate, spiraling labyrinths. My fascinations illuminate me like lightning. I am a dog that needs to run, run, run in a land without fences, dig, dig dig to the center of the earth, gnaw, gnaw, gnaw until every atom is separated from its partners.

I am incredibly stressed by variation in surroundings and routine, yet have a ferocious thirst for experience. Fear, distress, discomfort and overwhelm lock around my body like an iron maiden, but joy, interest and pleasure are just as all-consuming.

Non-autistics seem capable of being okay with the parts of life that torture me like a ball of fishhooks lodged in my guts, but at the same time they seem to sleepwalk through life without tasting anything. Being conscious feels unbearable some days, and yet I love to be alive, and I've hardly met anyone who loves to be alive the way I do. I drink deeply from the cup of life and taste strawberries and chocolate and nectar and seawater and sewage, and for everyone else it's just water.

i think, if you're gonna open a restaurant, you should be legally required to have a fat person come in, move through the restaurant, and sit in at least one of the chairs. I think that person should be able to veto anything from how close together the tables are to how fucking skinny the chairs are. few things tick me off more then being unable to get to half the resteraunt because all the tables are like, 10 inches apart, or sitting down in a chair that has pointless side rails only to realize that they are gonna be digging into my butt for the next hour unless i sit on the very edge of the seat and never lean back.
