writer culture is telling all your friends about how you've been working on your cool new wip and you're actually liking how it's turning out but the second they ask you what it's about - or worse, ask to read it - you run away screaming

To anyone who's ever been worried that your OC is too Extra... don't be.
The thing is, in any RPG, the protagonist is often meant to be a bit of a blank slate, with room to implement one's own OC, personality, and headcanons. The fact that game dialogue can sometimes feel noncommittal, or the fact that the responses can vary so widely, speaks to this: you can be anyone, so you are not forced to be any one thing specifically.
But when you carry that OC with you, out of that game? The role of the protagonist in the narrative shifts: it is yours. It belongs not to everyone (which is how they build the game) but to you, to your iteration and interpretation of the game's events. The protagonist goes from being the vessel through which we experience the story to being the main character of a narrative.
When we write, then (though this is also true for non-writers with OCs!) the protagonist - be they Tav, Rook, the Inquisitor, the Rogue Trader, anything - benefits from having more detail, and especially more extravagant detail. They are (most often) the POV character of the narrative. They are the lens through which we, as readers in fandom, experience your story.
So yes: make them special.
Yes: make them unhinged.
Yes: make them go on whatever emotional journey you like.
That's what they're there for, and these details enrich the story every single time.

The killer:
My protector:
Spin the wheel. That's who's trying to kill you.
Spin the wheel again. That’s who’s trying to protect you.
(If you have zero idea about the name you got, spin until you see someone you recognize.)
(Six months ago, I did a version of this poll with about five hundred options on the spinner wheel. For this one, I more than doubled it.)

Another one for those of us who have 5000 OCs. Name an OC who…
…you share a hobby with.
…has helped you with one of your own insecurities.
…sleeps with a stuffed animal.
…has a phobia.
…tends to get too absorbed in their activities.
…cries easily.
…has a physical disability.
…has a mental disability.
…collects something.
…has a unique fashion sense.
…doesn't outwardly show much emotion.
…has a certain accessory they always wear.
…has a different native language than you.
…is afraid of their own shadow.
…is pretty much fearless.
…has a comfort food.
…is seen as childish by their peers.
…nobody ever believes.
…misses somebody badly.
…is good at fixing things.
…has changed a lot from their original design.
…you made up a long time ago.
…tends to hog up a lot of space in your brain.
…has a lot of energy.
…isn't human.
…grew up in a different country from you.
…has changed so much in appearance that somebody who knew them years ago might not recognize them now.
…has a lot of trauma, even compared to the rest of your OCs.
…is grieving.
…wouldn't kill a mosquito (or similarly bothersome bug).
(pro tip: be sure to send an ask to the person you reblog this from!)

Flaws and Quirks in Male Characters That I’m BEGGING Writers to Explore
✧ Dudes who are bad at sports. Yes, Chad, not every male character needs to throw a perfect spiral in high school. Let him get hit in the face with a dodgeball. Let him (please) suck.
✧ The “pretty boy” who's not vain, just vibing. Like he knows he looks like he walked out of a Renaissance painting but has the self-esteem of a lost ferret.
✧ Shy, awkward boys who don’t magically become suave by Chapter 6. No, he’s still weird at parties and says “you too” when the waiter says “enjoy your meal.”
✧ Flirtatious guys who are actually super respectful. He's flirty but not a walking lawsuit. Shocker. He’s playful, not predatory.
✧ Male friendships that aren't emotionally constipated. Yes, two guys can say “I love you, bro” and not immediately punch each other to cancel it out.
✧ The soft-spoken leader. He doesn’t need to scream orders or have a “gruff, commanding voice.” He just talks, and people shut up and listen because he’s competent.
✧ Dudes with weird hobbies. like, your guy MC collect antique spoons or have a YouTube channel rating old vacuums. Why not. It’s his passion.
✧ Guys who are clingy and insecure in relationships. Not abusive, just genuinely terrified of being left on read for too long. He's trying his best, ok?
