she doesn’t have anything against christmas, per se, but there are certain aspects of the holiday season that she finds less than compelling, to put it mildly.  off the top of her head, she can list at least ten.  secret santa high on that list.  whoever came up with that particular brand of torture deserves to burn in hell, preferably in the most strenuous and boring part.  with a huff, she drops her phone unceremoniously onto the table.  it makes a satisfying clank noise.  her quick internet search failed to point her to anything useful.    〝what’s a generic gift that says: i didn’t forget about secret santa this year, but i was forced to partake so you’re getting a minimum effort gift to spare me the lecture?〞  she wonders out loud, perhaps the other will have some suggestions.  

“ cash . ” he shrugged head tilting to one side , “ maybe a gift card , a candle ,  a box set of movies and shows that you’re in that you’ve signed so it’s ‘ memorabilia ’ ... ” trailing off for a moment before a lightbulb clicked in his head , “ a sleeping bag . it’s the perfect gift , use it to nap on set , to go camping , open it up and it’s a good blanket for your backseat . ” if it wasn’t obvious enough , dexter was a terrible gift giver , even when it was someone he knew fairly well he had a habit of giving gifts that he would have wanted to receive .

“ stop acting like that , i was almost your step dad . ” and your actual father but that’s besides the point . “ i’ll get you a puppy if you help me impress the future mother of my children with my sweet sweet sense of style and impeccable dance moves . ” neither of which he had .

“ what’s up peechy keen . ” he said moving right past her to pick up the baby , “ and how are you my favorite god daughter . you’re looking absolutely adorable today . ” despite his gruff exterior and general disinterest in most people , dexter loves babies , cooing down at the small child . “ so when are you gonna let me take my child for an over night visit ? ” @peachesvanleer​

“ yeah i like it . ” then again he’d said that about the last five dresses . he really isn’t the person you should ask about clothing and yet it seemed to happen on a semi consistent basis . “ if i were a rich dude i’d totally let you fuck me and steal my trust fund . ” @valtinnamadrigal​

“ you know you don’t have to keep breaking in , i can give you a key . ” frowning to himself for a moment , “ or do you get off on the whole breaking and entering thing , it’s pretty fun so i get it , but also i’m tired of changing the locks . ” @avafiields​

𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 ; 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗿.

𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 were definitely moments where courtney was seriously considering firing her agent, in fact tonight may have been the final straw in his coffin. the brunette had somehow been persuaded into going on a ‘date’ - a pr stunt on her end. however the male sat in front of her was excruciatingly condescending and just plain boring; she couldn’t stand it anymore. excusing herself and making her way over to the first person she saw. ❛ i will do anything you want from me if you please get me the hell away from that man.❜

“ alright but it’ll cost ya . ” having been the person forced into a terrible date he couldn’t help but feel sympathy for courtney . “ i’ll get rid of him but you’re gonna have to spend the rest of the day with me . ” he’s not sure that she’s really getting an upgrade in company but who was he to complain . “ wait here . ” tapping the table before scooting into her newly empty seat , to the outside world it might have seemed like dex was laying down the law , but in truth he offered the guy two hundred dollars and a rack of beer to just leave with a sad face . still he returned to the table with a triumphant grin , “ you’ve been rescued fair maiden . ”

“well yeah, i mean, she was my horse. i called them love bites. it was enough to spook you a little, but not actually painful. it was our love language,” she said.

a shudder ran down his spine at the thought of biting being someone’s love language , “ are you okay ? ” he grinned hoping she’d pick up on the sarcasm in his words , “ who was just biting you in your childhood ? you know what - don’t answer that . ”

“Semi-decent? And here I thought my personality was fully decent,” she said sarcastically, scrunching up her nose when he pinched her cheek. “I haven’t introduced you before because he’d start hinting around about what a ‘nice young man’ you are and how I haven’t gone on a date in a really long time.” Her dad and Stacey were just the same, always trying to set her up or suggest she start dating again. Weren’t dads supposed to not want their daughters to date? “But you keep this up and I’ll let the horse take off with you into the wild.”

“ nope , don’t get too full of yourself , together you and i make one decent personality . you need me . ” laughter bubbling from his lips at the thought of her father trying to set them up on a date . “ that’s not true , you and i went on a date a few weeks ago , it was impromptu but i sat across from you while we ate and talked about random shit , that’s basically a date . ” eyes rolling as he tossed an arm around her shoulders , “ maybe for a little while but you’d miss me too much to let me be murdered by a horse . i bet by the end of the day you’d be leading the search party while i am having a good ol’ time walking around the wilderness . ”

she grinned, “i’m a whole bunch of surprises just waiting to be discovered. ya learn somethin’ new every day.” they may not have known much of each other, but amber was pretty easy going and sociable. “just haven’t really had the time with work and all. ya know how sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the routine and being busy with work that doing the things you enjoy tends to be pushed to the backburner for a while? yeah, kinda like that.” she explained, with a small shrug of her shoulders. “they’re such sweet creatures. and intuitive. they can totally sense if you’re like scared or if you’re calm and that can effect how they react to you. personally, i’d say go for it. but maybe check out a stable and spend some time around horses before you decide. feel it out. if you do and want some company, let me know. i’d love to go with.” she offered with a smile. “so you have a cabin? is that like your little getaway place?” 

“ i don’t usually like surprises but this one is alright . ” he nodded as she spoke , though he’d never really been the type of person to put things on the back burner for work . “ just move it to the front burner . that’s what i do , work is the backburner thing , there’s always more work to do . there’s never enough time to do the good things , eating , drinking , hiking , fishing , hunting , tailgating , swimming , i can keep going . ” he said with a grin . dexter wasn’t so much an open book but a locked box , once you got inside everything was wide open to see , the trick was finding the key . or knowing how to pick a lock . “ sort of , i always wanted to have a cabin in the woods , so i built one . mostly , it was taking a long time and i already started like eight other projects in between so i had a contractor finish it up . it’s been done for a few weeks now and i still haven’t been inside . ” he’d tried a few times and just hadn’t gotten up the nerve . it felt too concrete , a setting of roots he’d always wanted , and yet drove him to the brink of insanity . “ i’ve mostly been doing work on the ground , taking down trees , clearing space for the garden , i built a shed and i’m starting a canoe . ”

              𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭  𝐡𝐞  𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝  𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫  ,  jessie  was  confused  .  he  hadn’t  remembered  any  outing  with  the  guy  …  he  hardly  even  remembered  dex  in  general  .  although  ,  the  face  was  sort  of  familiar  .  then  again  ,  he  wasn’t  about  to  fight  whatever  it  was  that  was  going  on  .  how  could  he  ?  some  guy  was  at  his  door  asking  if  he  was  ready  for  a  random  activity  while  feeding  him  breakfast  .  sounded  like  an  interesting  day  .  he’d  never  doubted  drunk  jessie  before  …  whatever  was  going  on  must’ve  been  a  great  idea  .          ❛     never  been  more  ready  ,     ❜          he  spoke  ,  obviously  he  wasn’t  ready  .  still  wiping  the  tiredness  from  his  eyes  .          ❛     about  this  breakfast  ,  what’re  we  talking  ?  like  a  four  course  meal  or  ?     ❜          jessie  rambled  on  as  he  followed  the  other  out  the  door  and  to  the  truck  .

he tried , and failed , to hold back a laugh at the sheer confusion on jessie’s face . i could have been straight up lying and he would have probably come anyways...christ it’s a wonder none of these kids have wound up murdered . “ four course meal ? in my truck ? ” his brows furrowed , “ what do you think i’m running the four seasons ? it’s a fucking mcmuffin and some oj . ” shoving him into the back seat , the child lock already engaged so he couldn’t try and leave , “ now sit back there and be a good kid . if you don’t annoy me too much then i’ll let you drink when we get on the boat . wait - you can swim right ? i didn’t bring a lifejacket with me because i just assumed since you drink like a fish you’ll probably swim like one too , or at the very least float like a dead fish until i can pull you out . ”

he wasn’t really sure if jessie remembered agreeing to go fishing , the kid was pretty drunk , but a win was a win and he was going to take advantage of the yes . showing up at the other’s house as the run was cresting on the horizon , “ are you ready ? ” he grinned knowing full well he wouldn’t be . “ c’mon i got you coffee and there’s breakfast in the truck . ” @ofjessie​

“they’re the best, sweetest, most magical creatures to ever walk the earth,” jill said. “why? do you know a horse? i used to have one, but i had to adopt her out. i miss that bitey bitch.”

“ i don’t know a horse because they’re horses...wait a fucking second . they bite you and you’re still a horse girl ? ” brows furrowed as he shook his head , “ does not compute . ”
