How Social Media helps in times of Calamities?
The use of social media for emergencies and disasters on an organizational level may be conceived of as two broad categories. First, social media can be used somewhat passively to disseminate information and receive user feedback via incoming messages, wall posts, and polls. A second approach involves the systematic use of social media as an emergency management tool. Systematic usage might include: 1) using the medium to conduct emergency communications and issue warnings; 2) using social media to receive victim requests for assistance; 3) monitoring user activities and postings to establish situational awareness; and4) using uploaded images to create damage estimates, among others.
One of my most unforgettable experience is when Typoon Yolanda hits us. It was so terrifying the sounds of the trees near our home violently swaying against the house and the terrifying howls of the wind. Now, bare in mind, that this was the Philippines. The 2nd country of the world to have the most typhoons. At first, I tried to ignore it, thinking that it would pass by soon but we were quickly proven wrong though once I got a hold of the Wi-Fi and saw online that this weather was labeled as a Signal No. 2. It meant that this certain typhoon was capable of generating floods and strong waves. I became even more terrified , you could feel the house shake and tremble., I was sure that I was going to die. The thing, too, is that in front of our house, stood a large tree. And during this event, it was swaying so violently that you’d expect it to fall directly on our house. I was saying my prayers and I remember how much I love my parents.
When the night passed by though, I was greatly relieved. I thought the bad fortune was over. Until I saw my ’neighborhood.
Everyting collapsed. And barely items were rescued. It saddens me, really, recalling my neighborhood, it was usually full of joy, but no they are all holding and crying about their houses. It was soggy, destroyed, and ruined.
