a quick psa to anyone recently getting into greek mythology and is a victim of tumblr and/or tiktok misconceptions:
-there is no shame in being introduced to mytholgy from something like percy jackson, epic the musical or anything like that, but keep in mind that actual myths are going to be VERY different from modern retellings
-the myth of medusa you probably know (her being a victim of poseidon and being cursed by athena) isn't 100% accurate to GREEK mythology (look up ovid)
-there is no version of persephone's abduction in which persephone willingly stays with hades, that's a tumblr invention (look up homeric hymn to demeter)
-as much as i would like it, no, cerberus' name does not mean "spot" (probably a misunderstanding from this wikipedia article)
-zeus isn't the only god who does terrible things to women, your fav male god probably has done the same
-on that note, your fav greek hero has probably done some heinous shit as well
-gods are more complicated than simply being "god of [insert thing]", many titles overlap between gods and some may even change depending on where they were worshipped
-also, apollo and artemis being the gods of the sun and the moon isn't 100% accurate, their main aspects as deities originally were music and the hunt
-titans and gods aren't two wholly different concepts, titan is just the word used to decribe the generation of gods before the olympians
-hector isn't the villain some people make him out to be
-hephaestus WAS married to aphrodite. they divorced. yes, divorce was a thing in ancient greece. hephaestus' wife is aglaia
-ancient greek society didn't have the same concepts of sexuality that we have now, it's incorrect to describe virgin goddesses like artemis and athena as lesbians, BUT it's also not wholly accurate to describe them as aromantic/asexual, it's more complex than that
-you can never fully understand certain myths if you don't understand the societal context in which they were told
-myths have lots and lots of retellings, there isn't one singular "canon", but we can try to distinguish between older and newer versions and bewteen greek and roman versions
-most of what you know about sparta is probably incorrect
-reading/waching retellings is not a substitute to reading the original myths, read the iliad! read the odyssey! i know they may seem intimidating, but they're much more entertaining than you may think
greek mythology is so complex and interesting, don't go into it with preconcieved notions! try to be open to learn!

something i always forget but then am delighted to remember is one time in the seventies my grandmother went to an art history lecture at the met and the lecturer put up a slide and was like “this is a very dope statue, no???? anyway one of the bronzes is missing :(” and my grandmother was like, “…..hm”
and then during the Q&A very politely put her hand up and said, “hello i have good news!! i know where the missing bronze is” and the lecturer was like, “come again please?” and my grandmother went, “yeah, it’s on my dining room table, do you … want it?”
anyway it’s in the met now but please take a moment to imagine being like, a tired art historian who’s teaching a poorly-attended art history lecture for the general public and some random woman in the audience raises her hand and instead of asking you about why watercolors are pretty just reveals to you the location of a famous missing statue

was talking to a coworker and realised i could not for the life of me remember his name but i was too embarrassed to ask because we've spoken multiple times so mid-conversation i started concocting a plan to nudge the conversation towards the ID photos on our building passes so that i could be like oh my ID photo is awful haha the camera they use to take these has a real talent for making me look as unphotogenic as possible and then he would say oh yes me too haha everyone says that (because they do) and then i would be able to say well let me see yours it can't be as bad as mine! and he would show me his ID because we are coworkers and why wouldn't he and this would allow me to see his building pass which of course would have his name on it and then i would be able to say well yours is perfectly nice it must be me that's the problem! and then we would have a polite chuckle about it and i would have his name without needing to ask for it and he would be none the wiser and all would be well but then before i could execute this fine plan a little voice in my head went "so this is some light yagami bull shit you are about to pull" which was such a violent reality check it shocked me completely out of my embarrassment and i went "hey im so sorry your name has slipped my mind could you remind me" and he did and it was fine.

i saw a post recently telling people they shouldnt lie to their trans friends about whether they 'pass' because it could endanger them, and while i get the concept i think the problem is that passing is... so highly subjective? different people are gonna intepret your gender presentation differently.
like i've personally had strangers adjust their gendered language with me mid conversation and had no clue what changed their mind. i had a lunch break where one coworker had clearly assumed i was a man while the other had clearly assumed i was a woman and both kept side eyeing eachother in confusion. which is fine by me, that's the kind of reaction i've intentionally cultivated, but it does suck if you're aiming for a stealth lifestyle because there really isnt a line where you wake up one day 100% passing.
maybe just... try not to resent people if they say you pass when it turns out others may not agree with them. there's a good chance they weren't intentionally trying to give you false hope, it's just that gender is in the eye of the beholder, and if you're mid transition different people are gonna behold you differently.

“Women don’t have rights in Iran, they are homophobic in Iran!”
A black woman’s dying body was used to incubate a fetus because the state said so and the Supreme Court, regurgitating debunked talking points, ruled that trans kids could be denied gender affirming care that is proven to save lives. Does that justify a foreign power bombing New Jersey indiscriminately? Like some of y’all don’t give a fuck about LGBTQ Iranians or women in that country because I never saw a people get free through just having their shit blown up

Imagine you're at a fan meet up for James Cameron and he's just signing shit as usual. Then one day some people from his submarine trip are like "Jimmy! Paula found Atlantis!" and he just up and runs out of the place like "Holy shit, Atlantis!" and minutes later you see him booking it away from the KGB in America for some reason in a sixty year old trailer.
That's Montgomery LaMontgommery.
