reading nabokov is maddening because his writing is so playful and evocative and effortless and english isn't even his first language. he's doing things in a second language most people could spend their lives trying and failing to replicate in their first language. makes me feel like this

fast food employee rapidly contemplating their own morals when a car of therians pulls up to the drive thru, because you really shouldn't feed animals because then they lose their fear of humans and get dangerous but they'll get fired if they just don't give customers food

Job Searching in 2025
Below are some resources for those on the job hunt with the current rise of AI. All of this information I have gathered while on my own job hunt starting in June 2025
1. Find a job board such as hiring.cafe, Indeed, LinkedIn, Handshake (if you went to uni), state job board, local newspaper listings, Rat Race Rebellion , Honest Jobs
1a. Reach out to your state Employment Office or prior university Career Services Office for additional resources
1b. If you are under the age of 24, look into Job Corps for free resources
2a. Create a master resume with every single thing you have ever done, every class, every job, every volunteer activity, or hobby that may be relevant
2b. Keep a list of all your updated references with phone numbers, emails, and confirm with them directly that they are okay to be contacted as references
3a. Build a custom resume for each listing copying and pasting from the master resume, while using the same language that the job posting has
3b. Use free ATS tools like Jobscan or JobOwl to ensure it gets past any AI bots
3c. Save the resume as a .pdf and label w your full name, the job title, and current month/year (ex. John Smith Customer Service Representative June 2025 Resume.pdf)
4. If a listing requires a certification, training, etc, look up scholarships for the specific training needed. Sometimes you can get grants depending on your situation and type of work to help you open future avenues. If you cannot find a scholarship, look up the certification / syllabus would have taught and use your experience in previous roles to explain in your cover letter why you believe you are qualified even without the specific training.
5. Interviews - look up interview questions and practice with a friend. have a list of three strengths and a story or two to pull from that shows what a Good Worker you are. Get in the mindset of being ready for these types of questions, it'll help you be more prepared. Dress well, shower and brush ur teeth beforehand (even if zoom interview!). Do a power pose to get any jitters out and you got this! Interviews are more often a professional 'vibe check' than anything
6. Send a thank you email post interview, the same day if you can. Thank them for the opportunity and that you look forward to hearing from them in the future (see this post for a direct script if needed)
7. Accept rejection with grace and know that your worth does not come from a job. Practice self care, self compassion, and unplug when you can.
8. Dedicate an hour or so to job hunting everyday, but find other ways to fill you time. Volunteering, community building, skill development, research, etc. Have something to talk about during interviews!

Adult realization: you will make mistakes, you will act irrationally. You will commit some wrongs that cannot be fully righted. People will dislike you and misunderstand you for all sorts of reasons. None of these make you a bad person. All you can do is try your best to be kind and just to people, grow and learn.
