“Errm…
So I’ve been thinking” stated Keylin.
<oh Lord!… now what?>
Tumblr media
“You said I’m a girl now”.
“Yes.”
“Then, why is it I have to wear dresses with bows and hearts, lacy things, while you get to wear normal clothes like jeans and sneakers?”
“Because I am a woman 👩🏻 and you are my girl! 🧑🏻‍🦰

This delightful illustration comes from Nick and Mike, the Beautified Bullies by Carole Jean — a true crown jewel in petticoat punishment literature. Our two unfortunate heroes, Nick and Mike, are brothers who get to spend the summer with their formidable Aunt Miss Baldwin. But it doesn't take long before it becomes crystal clear that Miss Baldwin has big, frilly plans for them.
In this scene, we catch poor Nick as he ventures outside for the very first time in full girl-mode, hand in hand with his aunt. His expression says it all: the horror, the embarrassment, the please-let-a-hole-open-up-in-the-earth kind of energy. Not that Miss Baldwin made it any easier — she dressed him in the girliest dress imaginable! We're talking silky-soft fabric, a snow-white lace-trimmed collar, a bow in the front, and an even bigger one on the back. The dress has a short, poofy skirt that flutters around his bare legs like a feather duster with every shy, awkward step. It's a sensation he's not used to at all, and he feels completely exposed.
Nick eventually asked if he could wear a bit of makeup. Maybe, just maybe, people would think he’s a real girl then. The mascara, blush, and lipstick actually do the trick pretty well… but there's a catch: now his aunt wants him to carry a purse. Where else is he going to keep his beauty essentials?
In this scene, they're stepping into the very boutique where Miss Baldwin bought the dress. Back then, Nick was still dressed as a boy. Do you think the shop assistant will recognize him?
Here's what happens in the story:
But why was Miss Baldwin doing this to him? He'd been good and done everything she asked. She had no right. His anger rose at the injustice. He was no sissy; he was a real boy. The guys in school knew it. The girls knew it too. He had even been out on a date with one. He had never hated anyone as much as he hated Miss Baldwin at that moment.
“I thought I might buy you a pretty new dress. You would like that wouldn’t you, dear?” Miss Baldwin asked.
“I don’t need another dress!”
“Calm down, Nicole, your Auntie knows best.”
They entered the dress shop and headed toward the junior section. The same clerk approached who had watched with amusement when Miss Baldwin held the very dress he was wearing up to him.
“Yes, Ma’am?” she said. “May I help you?”
“You may. I am looking for a dress for my niece. We bought the one she’s wearing here and she just loves it, don’t you, Nicole?”
“Yes, Auntie,” he managed to nod and whisper.
With each passing second, he felt the gaze of the clerk intensifying. When he looked up, she was shaking her head.
“Your niece,” she said, “looks a lot like the boy you brought in when you were shopping for her.”
“Does she?” asked Miss Baldwin, “I rather imagine she does, now that you mention it. Nicole, do you think you look more like a niece or a nephew?”
“I don’t know, Auntie,” he said.
The clerk grinned.
“As you could tell, Miss, he is a boy,” Miss Baldwin said, “although quite a girlish one, aren’t you, Nicole?”
Nick couldn’t speak. He dropped his eyes, unable to meet the laughing ones of the clerk.
