Crafters!
This is an ask for support. Please make toys that celebrate difference. Mainstream toy manufacturers are doing almost nothing to combat perfectionist and ableist stereotypes in our children’s toyboxes. Check out #toylikeme for the minute ranges which do exist. “Children learn what they live” (Dorothy Law Nolte, 1954) If a child lives with only stereotype toys, he learns that difference is unacceptable. If a disabled child lives with toys without representations of disability, she learns that the world does not accept her. So, please, let’s change this one toy at a time. Let’s make toys that represent and celebrate difference. And if you are not confident making your own designs, I’m posting my patterns at https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Diffagurumi?ref=search_shop_redirect , where you can download my ‘octopods with a difference” patterns.
