Hungry (Thirsty Epilogue)
The moment the drawing room doors clicked shut behind them, Kate released a long-held breath—only for it to catch again as Anthony’s hand grazed the small of her back.
“You’re a menace,” she said, setting off in pursuit of the kitchen, her voice low and accusing.
“I’m a menace?” he echoed with a laugh, quickening his stride to keep up with her.
“Yes,” Kate answered sharply. She walked like a woman on a mission—like if she didn’t find a room with a lock in the next thirty seconds, she might actually combust.
“And what, pray tell, have I done to deserve such a title?”
He nearly collided with her as she stopped abruptly and turned. She jabbed a finger into his chest.
“You know exactly what you did.”
“Enlighten me,” he said, feigning innocence.
“Taking off your jacket. Rolling your sleeves.” Her eyes dipped to his now-bared forearms—tan, strong, and entirely too tempting. Her fingers followed her gaze, brushing against the muscle there. “You know that was an unfair advantage.”
“You want to talk of unfair advantages?” He leaned in, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, his breath warm enough to steal hers away. One hand found a loose ribbon on her bodice, his fingers toying with it as his eyes dropped. “This neckline is a war crime.”
Kate turned to keep walking, but not before glancing over her shoulder, eyes flashing. “Madame Delacroix says it’s fashionable.”
Anthony’s gaze dropped again to where the dress in question curved most distractingly. “Madame Delacroix deserves a knighthood.”
Kate narrowed her eyes and slowed her pace just enough for him to keep up. “You nearly broke Colin’s shin,” she added, trying—failing—to fight the smile pulling at her lips.
“He talks too much,” Anthony said shamelessly. “I needed silence to fully appreciate the vision of you biting your lip.”
Kate huffed out a laugh as she stepped into the kitchen, the air cooler, calmer than the heat-choked drawing room they’d left behind. The stone floor was cold beneath her slippers, a welcome contrast to the flush crawling up her neck. Her eyes adjusted to the dimmer light as she crossed to the pantry.
“Well,” she said over her shoulder, “if you came for a scone, I’m afraid you’ll have to earn it.”
Behind her, the door creaked and clicked shut. She turned just in time to see Anthony sliding the bolt across the latch, his grin downright wicked.
“Oh,” Kate said, feigning surprise. “So it is that kind of scone. You look hungry. Do you need something, too?”
“Oh, I’m starved.” He crossed to her in two slow, deliberate steps, hands settling instinctively at her waist. “Though I was rather hoping for something… whipped.”
Kate let out a breathy laugh and leaned back, the counter groaning slightly beneath them. “You are insufferable.”
“And you are irresistible.” He brushed his thumb beneath her jaw, slow and reverent. “I kept thinking of this,” he murmured. “You. Here. Like this.”
“In the kitchen?” she asked, fingers curling against the cool stone behind her as she tried to steady herself.
“In the kitchen,” he whispered, pressing a kiss just beneath her ear. “In my study.” Another kiss, lower. “In our bed.” His mouth found the hollow of her throat. “It’s why I couldn’t sleep.”
“I slept quite well,” she replied, fighting to keep her voice steady. “Newton enjoyed having his side of the bed back.”
“Newton can keep it,” Anthony nearly groaned. “I’m perfectly content right here.”
His lips hovered just above hers, their noses brushing. His eyes fell shut as he drew in the scent of her —lilies, always lilies.
“I missed you.”
“I missed you,” she echoed. “Right up until about five minutes ago.”
“Let me make up for my offenses,” he offered, pulling her closer, his hands sliding over the curve of her waist. “I think you’ll agree—I’ve gotten very good at apologizing.”
“An advantage to us both,” she muttered as her lips met his. The tension that had stretched between them all afternoon finally snapped, melting into something soft and unhurried—but no less desperate. He kissed her like a man starved, like a week had been a lifetime, like letting her go again was not an option he was willing to entertain.
A dish clattered in the scullery. They froze.
Kate pulled back, just enough to whisper, “Do you suppose Mrs. Wilson is back there?”
Anthony didn’t answer right away. Instead, he let his lips trail to the spot on her collarbone she’d been absentmindedly touching earlier.
“She’s very discreet,” he murmured against her skin.
“She’s seventy-three.”
“And discreet.”
Kate laughed—light, breathless—and kissed him once more for good measure. “Five minutes,” she warned, pulling back reluctantly. “If we’re gone too long, Hyacinth will come looking for me with a tray of suspicious beverages.”
“Ten minutes,” Anthony bargained.
“Seven.”
He sighed dramatically. “Seven minutes,” he relented—though he was already calculating how to wind his pocket watch without her noticing. “But just so you know...” His lips found hers again. “I plan to make every second count.”
“I’ve always admired your time management skills,” she breathed, her eyes fluttering closed.
With his lips still on hers, Anthony reached past her to the shelf and plucked a small jar of cream, holding it up in victory.
“For the scones,” he said innocently.
Kate arched an eyebrow. “Of course.”
