WIRE NEWS >> MCIAA brothers Maurizio and Roberto Opalio have been invited by Xavier Veilhan and Christian Marclay to activate Studio Venezia

The preview days of Venice Biennale 2017 will this year be opened by Turin duo My Cat Is An Alien. Invited by visual artist Xavier Veilhan and co-curator Christian Marclay to open Xavier Veilhan’s Studio Venezia project for the French Pavilion, MCIAA will be working in situ from 10–12 May. The installation in question works as a sculpture-recording studio, an “immersive environment taking in the entire pavilion so as to alter the public’s perception of space; a fusion of visual art and music, in the framework of the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College experiences”, says Veilhan. MCIAA will have more than 100 instruments at their disposal when they open the event; and other artists such as Éliane Radigue and Nicolas Godin of Air will also be taking part during the exhibition’s seven month run, which for the public starts on 13 May.

Venice Biennale runs from 13 May–26 November.

“For this entry in MCIAA’s artist book series, the visual presentation is an envelope holding a batch of paper torn into various sized pieces, all covered with lines that end at the ripped edges. Roberto also wrote a piece for an insert about the infinite lines that are evoked when you follow a road to its horizon. The music is a composition of loops, using the sounds of creating the books for source material – cutting, tearing, stapling, etc. It’s not easy to pick out the individual elements, but the brunt of it is very physical. Pretty sure there are also some percussion and drone instruments in the mix, but with the Opalio brothers, who ever really knows?“ - Byron Coley / THE WIRE

The book this time is made up of a large poster that has been cut into 16 pieces, held together with a big clip, along with a fine manifesto and a 3" CD. The music by the two Opalio Brothers is a combination of field recordings sourced from what sounds like japery in a deserted coffin factory, overlaid with various insect machine sounds, lost organ tones and a certain wisp of space dust. “Very cool project by half of the prolific and overly talented Italian duo My Cat Is An Alien. This is a composirtion based on the book that contains it. The book has a sequence detailing acool abstract suite of visual art, and the music is a tape piece sourced from the sounds of the book being assembled.
