Can I tell you a secret? You don’t have to be in a relationship.    I mean it. I know they force it down your throat until you choke on it. Girls aren’t pretty unless they’re wanted. Boys aren’t men unless they’re having sex with someone. People aren’t lovable until they’re dating someone.    But a relationship won’t always make you happy, and as wonderful as romance is, it isn’t the only love that exists. I have seen friendships that are deeper and more pure than couples who swear it’s forever - and yet the friendship is the one people ignore.    I have heard so often “nobody loves me” out of the mouths of people who are single. And it kills me because if you ask them: where are your parents, your teachers, your classmates, your pets - they say, yes, okay, but it doesn’t count. Of course it counts, love doesn’t diminish just because someone doesn’t want to have sex with you. In fact, doesn’t it sort of make that love more real that they want nothing - not even a date - out of you?   It is pretty to be in love. It’s magical, I’m sure. But it’s also wonderful to stop for ice cream in your prom dress with six other girls. It’s also wonderful to go visit the world with nothing but a bunch of buddies who are really excited about learning.    The problem is: we’ve made everything about “the one”. But maybe “the one” is just you, loving yourself, having fun, and being happy. Maybe instead of looking for our other halves, we should be piecing ourselves together.   Maybe I wasn’t born unfinished. Maybe I am the one who makes myself better.

ESSERE AMICHE. A TRENT’ANNI

L’amicizia è una cosa bellissima, a qualsiasi età, ma a trent’anni, forse, lo è ancora di più. Le amiche a trent’anni le hai scelte da tempo e, nel tempo, hai anche avuto modo di capire che alcune di loro sono delle grandissime stronze. Che alcune amiche le perdi per strada ma, ora lo sai, di sicuro quelle non erano buone amiche. Le amiche a trent’anni fanno quello che facevano quando avevano vent’anni, solo che ora c’è anche il lavoro, un marito, un figlio che assorbono le energie di tutte queste amiche, tenendole lontane per un po’. Ad incastrare gli impegni di tutte ci vuole una pazienza e una determinazione che a vent’anni ti dava fastidio solo il pensiero e per organizzare un aperitivo di mezz’ora, in media a trent’anni, ci si impiegano dai dieci ai quindici giorni. A volte anche un mese.

A trent’anni con le amiche, la sera, ti vedi “prestino, perché poi devo tornare a casa, ché domani mattina la sveglia suona presto” e quando guardi il barman non pensi più alla storia di passione che potresti avere con lui sotto al bancone, ti auguri solamente che non ti metta alcol scadente nel cocktail: “Altrimenti domani di sicuro mi sveglio con un mal di testa pazzesco”.

Le amiche a trent’anni non si vestono più tutte uguali. La regola del tacco, tutte o nessuna, non vale più. Ognuna si sente libera di uscire vestita come vuole, di affermare se stessa, risplendendo della bellezza di un gruppo di donne che hanno imparato ad amare tutto le une delle altre. Anche quegli orribili sandali con la zeppa sì, anche quelli. Gli uomini, per le amiche a trent’anni, di solito sono quasi tutti sposati, separati, divorziati, ex qualcosa (o di qualcuno) insomma, ma allergici ai legami proprio come quando avevano vent’anni. I problemi, invece, sono sempre gli stessi con l’aggiunta della comparsa delle prime rughe. E dei primi capelli bianchi. Poi c’è la cellulite che va sempre di moda, quella che già c’era a vent’anni e che ci sarà, di certo, pure a quaranta.

C’è che prima non ti struccavi nemmeno, prima di infilarti nel letto alle quattro di notte e ora invece state lì a parlare per ore di routine serale e dei benefici del tonico utilizzato sempre dopo il latte detergente. C’è che prima andavate a ballare tutte le sere e ora, al massimo, tre volte all’anno. C’è che prima ci si vedeva sempre e solo nel locale  più frequentato del momento e ora va bene tutto, purché la musica non sia troppo alta altrimenti non possiamo parlare in pace. C’è che tra amiche, a trent’anni, si può confessare di preferire il divano e la tv, per una sera almeno, trovando pure una discreta comprensione da parte delle altre.

Le amiche a trent’anni lo sanno che quella tua mania di controllo, in realtà, è solo bisogno di essere amate. E lo capiscono. Sanno che sei stata illusa, tradita, ferita ma anche che hai tutte le carte in regola per rialzarti da sola. Mentre loro ti stanno vicino. Ed è solo questa parte della storia che ti ricorderanno quando, per l’ennesima volta, avrai bisogno di rimetterti in piedi. Sanno che ce la stai mettendo tutta per essere felice, per raggiungere i tuoi obiettivi, fare carriera oppure no, un figlio oppure no, una vita coniugale felice oppure no. Sanno che la vita può prendere pieghe inattese e che la capacità di reagire, nel bene e nel male, è la cosa più importante.

Soprattutto le amiche a trent’anni sanno che non è mai o tutto bianco o tutto nero, per questo sanno anche che tu, come loro, hai bisogno adesso più che mai di un’amica che ti asciughi le lacrime e esulti dei tuoi successi. Sanno che avere accanto qualcuno è una scelta e si sentono fortunate ad essere state scelte da voi.

Le amiche a trent’anni sono donne consapevoli di loro stesse, quasi sempre almeno, consapevoli del fatto che, a qualsiasi età, un’amica saprà dirti sempre: “E se andrà male, la supereremo insieme. Anche questa“.
