in my latest attempt to drag unsuspecting new fans into the ginhiji/hijigin swamp, i've collated some information about idiosyncratic terminology, dates and emoji you might see in the (jp) fandom.

it's a bit too fandompilled and specific to really be a primer, but it's a collection of knowledge that will hopefully make tentative forays into the jp fandom a little easier to understand.

this post has been kicking around my drafts for over a year at this point, but the run of july anniversary days made me remember it, so i'm just gonna release it into the wild and keep it updated as things come to mind. suggestions are always welcome via comments or ask!

terminology

1046: this is the hijikata number, representing tou-shi-rou (10-4-6). members of the jp fandom often like to post at 10:46 as an acknowledgement of this, though sometimes will post "1047!" or similar when they just miss it. 551: this is the manga chapter in the saraba shinsengumi arc where they exchange their bowls of food, a milestone moment for all of us. tangentially, as a result of this the chinese food chain 551 horai does good business with ginhiji fans - you will often see people posting photos of their 551 goodies or outside the stores.

azuki mayo don: the name of the ginhiji petit only at doujinshi events. often shortened to azumayo. (jp: あずきマヨ丼) inu no esa to neko no esa: the name of the hijigin petit only at doujinshi events. literally 'dog food and cat food', from their respective insults of each other's meals. often shortened to inuneko. (jp: いぬのえさとねこのえさ) kabukichou daishuukai: the name of the gintama only at doujinshi events. (jp: かぶき町大集会)

onedraw, onewrite: not exclusive to any particular fandom, but broadly refers to artists creating an illustration or piece of writing within a one hour time limit. often fandoms will have twitter accounts where organisers will choose themes and a time so participants can post under a hashtag with their work, e.g. the hijigin one. (jp: ワンドロ, ワンライ)

noteworthy dates

may 05: hijikata birthday (0505) 10: hijigin day (0510)

july 23-24: middle birthday, i.e. the halfway point between their two birthdays. generally just celebrated as a fun ship day, like a minor 1005/0510 (jp: 真ん中バースデー) 27: anniversary of the bowl exchange chapter (551) release day in the manga, originally in 2015. (jp: 丼交換記念日) 30: anniversary of the "i'm gonna go search for the yorozuya" chapter (692) release day in the manga, originally in 2018. (jp: 捜しにいくよ記念日)

october 05: ginhiji day (1005) 10: gintoki birthday (1010)

there are some other relevant days (e.g. see this gh list made by mizushima) but the ones above are the major celebration days where you'll see larger numbers of related posts and art.

you may see zessan art on the 23rd of each month (because it looks like Z3), e.g. kannagi drew middle birthday zessan art in 2024.

in the first week of every month, you'll see a lot of tweets tagged with #ひらいて赤ブー and a ship name. these are tweets that are made to be retweeted as much as possible, as the RT counts influence akaboo's (major doujinshi event organiser) decisions in holding particular petit only events. in these tweets, character names are often obscured in creative ways, as the jp fandom is generally pretty particular about not having the orthodox spellings of character names included in ship content.

🌊, 🌊📦: wavebox; anonymous messaging service that creators often use to take requests, solicit feedback etc

🛁: in the doujin context, this represents fromagee, which is the female-focused section of melonbooks. melonbooks are one of the major sellers of doujinshi, and the one overwhelmingly used by the ginhiji/hijigin doujin communities. so used because bath in japanese = furo, the first two characters of the jp spelling of fromagee. 🐯: in the doujin context, this represents toranoana, who are the other major seller of doujinshi. a small number of artists additionally sell on tora, and a smaller number still do so exclusively, but fromagee is currently the preferred storefront for ginhiji/hijigin (and i think all gintama slash ships). tora = tiger.

07/13 HOSHI NI NEGAI WO

just over a week out from day 2 of hoshi ni negai wo, a new doujin event for 2025, where the next azuki mayo don will be taking place. you know the drill!

in case you missed the last post, syaku has confirmed attendance for this event, which is great news for the fandom. other names returning include iru, who is releasing a book after five years; poyo is back to gh after a bit of time away in gegege fandom; mr is also back. eternally grateful to the community that makes these events possible.

otherwise, just wanted to flag that hoshi ni negai wo - a new doujinshi event for 2025 - had its day 1 on the sunday just past, at which there was an instance of inu no esa to neko no esa, the hijigin only.

i don't do inuneko round-up posts because i don't spend nearly enough time in the hijigin fandom to keep up - apologies - so i just want to flag a book i've been keeping an eye on:

this one's a joint publication between ameya sorajiro and mr/matsumoto. i previously mentioned they'd be putting out a ginhiji book for hoshi ni negai wo day 2 (which they're working on now! a horror book!!!) but they got a hijigin one out first 💘

as the cover suggests, it's an angel/devil themed book with some isekai shenanigans in the ameya sorajiro part. (mr's contribution plans got readjusted due to a broken pc lmao.) you can see a fuller sample here on pixiv - frankly the base-of-wing caress alone is enough to sell me on it. i am a simple being.

before the usual list, i just want to flag two notable returners for this event. first is sakurana, who is returning to the gintama fold with a new book for the first time in about seven years (and about nine years since the last ginhiji!), planned to be a kyuubi gin x human hijikata book (update: see 18 below). sakurana has been posting a lot on twt this year, including redraws of old comics and plenty of new art, so please do take a look.

second is kuman, who wil be releasing a pattsuchi book (which is already up for preorder!). kuman has been really popular in the yume space (and is still also releasing yume books) but will be returning to BL for the first time since 2020. it'll be one for the darker content and super-S enjoyers, so do consider supporting if it's up your alley.

mr recently announced that he'll be joint publishing a ginhiji book with ameya sorajiro (who normally works in hijigin) at july's azumayo for the hoshi ni negai wo event. in celebration of this fact, here is a short from the relatively recently web-released 泥と粋と酒と与太 that i think about often.

as a fan of both i am pretty chuffed about this, especially since mr ended up being unable to participate in the otokomae anthology. there are a few big names returning to ginhiji this year, so i am eternally grateful to the magnetism that keeps us all coming back despite the ebbs and flows.
