Alternate Covers- Kate Daniels World (Part 2/2)
The world has suffered a magic apocalypse. We pushed the technological progress too far, and now magic returned with a vengeance. It comes in waves, without warning, and vanishes as suddenly as it appears. When magic is up, planes drop out of the sky, cars stall, electricity dies. When magic is down, guns work and spells fail.
It’s a volatile, screwed-up world. Magic feeds on technology, gnawing down on skyscrapers until most of them topple and fall, leaving only skeletal husks behind. Monsters prowl the ruined streets, werebears and werehyenas stalk their prey; and the Masters of the Dead, necromancers driven by their thirst of knowledge and wealth, pilot blood-crazed vampires with their minds.

The Innkeeper Chronicles by Ilona Andrews
“I asked him if he was leaving anyone behind. He said he met a girl with stardust on her robe, and when he looked into her eyes, he saw the Universe looking back.”

Gods & Monsters of KATE DANIELS WORLD
God: Deimos (Δεῖμος meaning “dread” )
Deimos was the son of Ares and Aphrodite. He is the twin brother of Phobos and nephew of the goddess Enyo who accompanied her brother Ares into battle, as well as his father’s attendants, Trembling, Fear, Dread and Panic. Deimos is a personification and an abstraction of the sheer terror that is brought by war.

“I’m surprised you’re still here.”
“I’m hard to kill.”
“Like a cockroach.”
“Not sure that’s a good comparison. I never had trouble killing small insects”

She was beautiful and radiant. He remembered the concern in her eyes. The same concern drove her now, pushing her toward acts of violence. On the surface, he’d be a fool to turn her down. She was driven by tragedy, just like him, and she would be incorruptible, just like him. He needed a blade to kill, but she could kill dozens at once empty-handed. She was Death, and she had just asked to be his ally.

On her chest, in mirror image of mine, is the same wound that will one day become a scar. Beneath her false sternum is another new, false heart. I wonder if they are set to the same rhythm and even now beat together. Gently, we turn onto our sides, pressing our foreheads together

“Yes, I’m a hermit. Mostly I brood,“ Mad Rogan said. "Also, I’m very good at wallowing in self-pity. I spend my days steeped in melancholy, looking out the window. Occasionally a single tear quietly rolls down my cheek.”
“Do you also brush a white orchid against your lips?” Arabella put in.
“While sad music plays in the background?” Lina grinned.
“Perhaps,” Mad Rogan said.

“We need a team name.”
“Hunters,” Raphael said.
“Valiant Knights of the Fur,” Dali said.
“Justice Group,” Jim said. “Since Justice League is taken.”
“Fools.” Doolittle shook his head.
“Fools,” I said into the receiver.
“Fools?” Saiman asked.
“Yes.”
