I am so hyped to be pretty far along in the Finlay Donovan ARC because it comes out next month and I love this series. Don't ask me how far back I got it and how it's taken me so long to actually even pick up the book. 馃槄

猸愶笍 You Can't Touch My Hair (And Other Things I Still Have to Explain) 猸愶笍

馃叀馃厫馃叄馃厴馃厺馃厲: 4.25 It's that time, the time to review the first book on my page! And there could not be a more fun book to start with. Phoebe Robinson's first memoir is filled with truths but those truths are delivered with good humor which provides levity. I really appreciated getting a dose of realness with a side of "here's something to take the edge off." This book was written in 2016 but the messaging still holds up. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing because we love that this book is relatable but also dang I wish that things were better! The world can always continue to strive to do better, especially in scary times such as these. I think that this is such a good book and you most should read it if you definitely want to laugh and maybe sort of want to cry (it's been a cry heavy year over here). Reading this and knowing that some experiences are just universal (and jarring) brings a sense of "I'm seen and I see you." I appreciate when a book brings that. So, anyways, thanks for coming to my TED Talk about how good this book is. As Phoebe says, and I quote, "totes preesh." 鉂わ笍 See you on the flip side, friend.

Say it louder for the people in the back! I'm so tired of seeing bad reviews because people don't read the descriptions of the book carefully or they really just expect that it'll for some reason be different from what the book explicitly says it will be.
I think people really, really need to learn the difference between "this story was Poorly Written" and "I had extremely specific expectations of what I wanted this story to be and was extremely disappointed that it went in a different direction."
Similarly, people need to learn the difference between "this character was written Out-of-Character" and "I built up so many headcanons for this particular character that I wound up with my own extremely specific interpretation of them and was extremely disappointed when those headcanons were jossed."
You are allowed to experience disappointment when stories don't go in the direction you want them to! But that is not the same thing as those stories being poorly written.

Not me coming onto Tumblr for the first time in my life as a 28 year old and being instantly intimidated haha. I want to find people who like books and just talk non-stop about books. *sending out my book lover signal*
