For those too young to understand or maybe weren't fans of college basketball back then..... i can't overstate the popularity of John Walls freshman year at Kentucky. This short video somewhat does it justice. From only a few minutes of footage, you get the idea but, honestly, just find a time machine to go back and experience it yourself.
Not just Wall, but that Kentucky team encapsulated everything great I remember about 2000's college hoops. This was peak NCAA basketball content on every level. The entertainment factor and hype surrounding UK and Wall was unmatched and lasted all season. The energy and excitement they brought to the game you could feel through the screen. Not to mention the overall competition that year was next level. They took the sport to new heights.
Every home game seemed like was nationally televised. Wall was the most electrifying guard in the game, guaranteed #1 pick and had a viral dance. Kentucky was on their way to becoming the powerhouse they are today - a machine known for recruiting entire starting line ups of five star freshman and making them into future one and done NBA lottery picks - and Coach Cal became one of the coolest, and consequently most envied and controversial coaches in the game.
Back then, we all know the players was getting paid in some way or another, but imagine the money Wall could've made if he was in the game today. Think Zion, Cooper Flag, Caitlin Clarke or even the Bronny but only 15 years ago WITHOUT social media as it exists today.
I can't remember another College team or player I literally would call off work to watch or volunteer going home early just to catch tip off.
You had to be there.

Someone should make a documentary on John Wall off the strength of his high school and College years alone.
