Symphony of dreams
Tumblr media
Morpheus x Female Reader
Times are changing, and nothing is as it once was. The Dreaming is being rebuilt, but much is happening. The siblings reunite once more, Hell becomes vacant, and Delirium seeks out their missing brother. Dream faces his past, and his wife questions her place beside him.
{Masterlist}

Chapter Eighteen - Brief lives
Tumblr media
Lucienne, my wife, sister, and I will be making a short journey together.”
“Uh, you will?”
“We will,” Delirium confirms.
“We will,” Dream repeats.
You just smile at her as you descend the stairs with your husband and sister-in-law.
“Should any matters arise which require my attention, please feel free to contact me.”
“Uh, contact you where, exactly?” Lucienne asks, following your all toward the entrance.
“The Waking World,” Dream replies, looking at her. “Let Pharamond know we will be calling on him. I trust he still oversees transportation?”
“I've heard nothing to the contrary, but-”
“Good.” He cuts her off.
“My lord, do you really feel this is a wise course of action?”
“Lucienne, my brother had his reasons for leaving. He desires his privacy, and I respect his wishes.”
“Then why are you going?”
“Because… My sister seems to need it.”
Dream glances at where you and Delirium stand. His sister is making bubbles appear around you and you're playing along by trying to catch them. He watches you for a moment.
He knows why he's going… and he knows you'll be upset if you find out. Which is why he hopes this quest will keep you both occupied enough for him to set some things straight.
“And it had been a long time since I walked the waking world,” he comments.
“You know who else recently kept here for the waking world?” Lucienne sighs.
He looks at her. “His has nothing to do with her.”
Lucienne looks at him with doubt. Heavy doubt. She's not stupid. “You'll break her heart again.”
“I have no intention of doing so.”
“Do you ever intend to?”
Dream goes quiet.
“Why not look for Nada in her dreams?” Lucienne asks.
“That would be inappropriate,” he replies.
“That would be inappropriate?”
“Perhaps fate will reunite us.”
“It won't seem like fate to Nada… or your wife.” Lucienne glances over at you again. You've made Delirium laugh.
Lucienne was always respectful of Dream's partners, but you were always special. You were different. Lucienne adored you and looked up to you. She expected more from her creator in his behavior toward you. He did not know how good he had it.
“And what about when they find out?”
“It will be a brief diversion,” he replies. “Nothing more.” He knows what she's insinuating. “You worry too much, Lucienne.”
“You make it too easy,” she mutters softly. Dream chuckles lightly.
The doors to the palace open and you rejoin Dream's side. “Ready?” You ask him.
He slides his hand into yours and looks at you tenderly. “Ready.”
Lucienne wanted to shake some sense into him. How can he stand there looking at you like that knowing what he really intended to do? You look at him with all the love in the world.
Dream should treat you properly.
“Oh, look! It's stopped raining!” Delirium smiles. “You must be feeling much better.”
“I am.” He says, looking at you.
You smile at him and give his hand a squeeze. You were feeling better too.
Tumblr media
New York.
“Who's Farrel?” Delirium asks, walking between you and Dream as you walk down the sidewalk.
“He used to be a god. Lord Pharamond. Whom last we met in Babylon, his sacrifices were dwindling, and his shrines had been abandoned. So I suggested he find himself another occupation. He calls himself Farell now.”
You're looking around as you all walk. New York was busy and noisy, but you liked it.
Dream slows down as he hears someone across the road. You and Delirium slow down with him, watching him. You can't see who he's looking at very well. A woman getting out of a cab. You can just make out her silhouette in front of the light she's standing next to. Dream crosses the road to talk to her. You look at him with confusion and concern.
The woman walks away after a moment and you walk over to him.
“Who was that?” You ask, trying to get a glimpse.
“Not who I thought it was.” His hand instinctively claps onto yours. “Let us go.” You say nothing as he leads you away, but you are curious as to who that had been.
“We're here,” Dream says, leading you and Delirium toward a building.
Farrell Travel.
“Are you with Farrell travel?” Dream asks tje woman who exits the building.
“I am. My name is Wanda. Mr Farell told me to expect you and your company. Hello,” she greets you and Delirium. “About the car you requested…”
“You requested a car?” Delirium asks her brother, looking up at him.
“This is not it,” he says, looking at the car parked out front.
“No, it’s not. But if you'll come with me…” Wanda heads inside. Delirium takes lead and and you chuckle as you take Dream's arm, following them.
Wanda guides you through the parking garage.
“What did Mr Farrell tell you about us?"
“He was very discreet,” Wanda replies. “He said you were members of a royal family.”
“Oh, I like that,” Delirium says, smiling. You chuckle softly.
“He didn't say which one.”
“That is for the best,” Dream comments.
“And that I'd be taking you to visit your brother's friends, providing security and acting as your Stateside concierge.”
“Oh, very nice,” you say, smiling at Dream. There is a hint of amusement in his eyes as he looks at you.
“Mr Farrell mentioned a request for something classic, so the company we work with sent us this from England.” Wanda unveils the car that had been chosen for you all.
“Oh, that's beautiful!” You comment.
Delirium goes over to it and gets a closer look.
“It is,” Wanda replies. “It's just, some of our clients prefer to travel in relative privacy. And in this car, you might get a little bit of attention.”
“Well, I don't mind. But my brother might,” Delirium says.
“I do not,” he states. “This is perfect."
“It is.”
“It is?”
“It is. Since we have not informed anyone of our arrival, we would do well to be seen by those that might know us.”
“Like who?” You ask, looking at Dream.
“Like our brother.” He looks back at you.
“Oh!” Delirium perks up. “Yes. Well, I agree. Its perfect. Can I drive?”
You laugh. “Probably not,” you reach out and place a hand on her shoulder, guiding her to the back seat. She follows willingly.
“I bet I'd be really good,” she comments.
“Absolutely not,” Dream sighs. You chuckle at the pair.
“Our first stop is the Upper Eastside,” Wanda announces.
You all get in the car and get comfy. Dream wants to sit beside you but you take the passenger seat, meaning he's stuck in the back with his sister. He pouts when he realises you've done this on purpose. You're still punishing him.
“The lawyer, is he a god too?” Delirium asks, looking at her list.
“A mortal. One of the oldest. There are only 60 men and women walking the earth with personal memories of the mammoth and saber-toothed tiger. Bernard Capax is one of them.”
Wanda gets in and drives.
Tumblr media
Delirium presses the buzzer over and over and over. You stand behind her watching her do so.
“Stop.” Dream tells her off softly.
She presses it one more time. A few seconds after she does so, the door opens. A man stands on the other side looking a little… upset.
“Yes?”
“We're looking for Bernard Capax.”
“I'm sorry. Um… Was he expecting you?” The man asks.
“We're going to surprise him,” Delirium answers cheerfully.
“He's our brother's friend,” Dream explains.
“I met him once, but that was ages ago,” Delirium adds. “Ages and ages and ages. He'll remember me.”
“Um…” A tear runs down the man's face. “I'm sorry. They just called. He's, um… My father is dead.”
You feel your heart drop in your chest.
Delirium and Dream look at one another. Once the man closes the door, Delirium pulls out her little list.
“Dream, the dancing woman is next on my list. How far away is she?”
“I wonder whether we should continue this,” Dream comments carefully.
“You're giving up at the first hurdle?” You question him.
Delirium goes to stand in front of her brother. “I knew you would do this,” she frowns.
“Do you not find it curious that Capax was killed the moment we came to his door?” He asks both of you.
Sure… it was strange.
“By a building. It was an accident,” Delirium comments.
“Someone does not wish us to speak with our brother's friends,” he tells her.
“You don't actually believe that, do you?” You ask him, looking at him with suspicion. He hated how you looked at him like that.
“I do.”
You sigh softly.
“It could just be a…” She pauses. “What's the word when two things happen at the same time but don't necessarily mean anything?” She closes her eyes tight as she tries to think.
“A coincidence,” you reply.
“Yes, that's it! A coincidence.” She smiles. “That's the problem with you, Dream. Not everything has to mean something.”
Delirium walks away.
You give Dream a look and then follow her. Dream exhales softly through his nose knowing what that look meant. He follows after you both.
Wanda waits in the car. She gets out when you all approach. “Welcome back. How's the lawyer?”
“Dead,” Delirium frowns.
“Seriously?”
Dream nods. “A short time ago.”
“I'm sorry sorry. Should we take a break?” Wanda asks, concerned.
“No!” Delirium exclaims, cutting off her brother's ‘yes’. “We're going to see the dancing woman."
“I think it unwise to continue,” Dream states, thinking this was a very bad idea.
“Well, we're going,” you say, walking past him and climbing into the car. He sighs. Again. There was no winning if you were siding with his sister.
“She's in Philadelphia, which is about two hours away,” Wanda tells you all. “Shall I make you dinner reservations before the show?”
“I'd like that,” Delirium smiles.
“Me too,” you smile with her.
“Please, Dream!”
He gives in. “Perhaps you can recommend a place where we might encounter… fellow travellers?”
You eye him.
“I know just the place.” Wanda smiles.
Tumblr media
The place Wanda had brought you to was fun. Music played in the background of the well lit bar. Wanda sat across from the three of you.
Delirium had taken it upon herself to sit between you and her brother, seemingly not noticing the brooding look on his face as he stared at you. You were too busy looking around the room, but you could feel his eyes on you. It was the little punishments that were making this all worth it. You weren't just about to take him back as if nothing had happened. Just because you put the ring back on, didn't mean you weren't going to make him suffer a little bit.
“I love that you two know each other well enough that you can just be with each other. You don't even have to speak. You can just enjoy each other's company” Wanda says, leaning forward slightly and smiling.
You're unsure of if she was referring to you and Dream or him and Delirium. No one had spoken since you all arrived here.
Dream and Delirium glance at each other.
“You don't have siblings, do you?” Dream asks.
Of course she was talking about them. Wanda didn't know your situation with Dream after all. You look down at the cocktail Delirium had ordered, not wanting to risk looking at either of them.
“I used to. An older brother,” Wanda replies.
“Was he grumpy and bossy and thought he knew everything about everything?” Delirium asks.
You chuckle softly. Dream looks over at you, but is disappointed to see you looking elsewhere. At least he heard you laugh a little.
“He was, actually. But he used to take it out on me.” You lift your eyes to Wanda and frown. She notices.
“Do you not see your family?” Dream asks her.
“No,” she replies softly.
“Why not?” Delirium questions.
“My parents were very conservative. They didn't know what to do with a kid like me. So when I turned 15, I started hormone therapy without them knowing. So I had to run away.”
“Well… did you tell them that you were going?” Delirium asks. You could tell why she asked that.
“I left a note. But I didn't want them to try and stop me, so… no. But my Aunt Dora, she still calls. She prays for me. She's scared that because I'm trans, I don't have access to God. But she still talks to me.”
“Do you miss them ever?” Delirium asks, looking a little helpless. You find yourself taking one of her hands, and she clings to you.
“I miss my books,” Wanda says softly. “They were my companions. I was obsessed with the Oz books growing up. I had this beat-up, first edition of Land of Oz that I should have taken with me.”
“I love Judy Garland,” Delirium cheerfully adds. You chuckle softly. “She used to spend a lot of time in my realm.”
“Actually, Judy's in the Wizard of Oz, which is gay culture. The Marvelous Land of Oz is trans culture. It's about a child named Tip who finds out that they've been living under an enchantment their entire life. And that she's actually a princess. Princess Ozma of Oz.”
“Wow!” Delirium listens in awe.
Dream, however, is looking over at you. You're listening intensely to Wanda, a smile on your face.
“I… I don't know that one,” Delirium adds.
“Wanda, if your family came here now, uninvited, looking for you, would you be happy to see them?” Dream asks, needing to take his mind off you for now.
“I would,” she nods. “I would be very happy.”
Delirium smiles. There is hope in her mismatched eyes. Her hand squeezes yours. You squeeze back.
“And if they asked you to come home?” Dream asks.
“I'd tell them I'm a grown woman now,” Wanda smiles. “I have a whole love of my own that I've built. But, I would love it if we visited each other. I'd love it very much.”
Delirium was a little tearful. You wrapped an arm around her and held her tight as she rested her head on your shoulder. She missed her brother.
Dream looks at the two of you. He wished he could hold you like that… but he had no right to. Not until he fixes everything.
Tumblr media
“Should be on this next block.” Wanda states, leading the way. The quest continues.
Dream is relieved you're walking beside him now. He looks at you from the corner of his eye. Your gaze is focused ahead, but he can practically see the gears turning in your head.
“What are you thinking about?”
“Hm?” You look up at him.
“You were away.”
You exhale softly and smile. “I was thinking.”
“Tell me.”
“Wanda knew who she was and worked hard to become the amazing woman she is today. People can be whoever they want to be, and as long as they're happy, they're okay.”
He wasn't sure what you were getting at.
“Maybe I can do the same.”
He frowns. “What do you mean?”
“To be happy… you have to make things happen. You have to stop living under everyone else's expectations and follow your heart. You have to do what is right for you, even if it feels scary. I've never thought of leaving the Dreaming before, but Nada, even in this new age, knew what she wanted and followed after it, and I wonder… if maybe I can find my happiness by doing the same.”
Dream catches your wrist in his hand and pulls you to a stop. Those blue eyes of his are full of concern and confusion. “Are you implying you have thought of leaving me?”
You sigh softly as you look at him. “You haven't exactly made this easy for me.”
“You put the ring back on. I thought…”
“Dream, you were very upset. When you're upset, the Dreaming is affected by it, and by extension, so are the residents. When Nada left, you were hurt… and I do understand why, but I'm still hurting Dream.”
He looks disappointed. “I don't understand.”
“Morpheus… I love you. I do. More than anyone I have ever known, but I can not live in the shadow of a woman you once loved. Not when she still clearly holds your heart. Nada does not love you. At least, not anymore, and I'm trying so hard to be enough…”
He speaks your name softly.
“I wanted to help you find your brother because I was hoping we could… bond. That we could fill in the cracks, maybe start to heal… but I'm not stupid, Dream. I know why you're really doing this, and Delirium will never forgive you if she finds out. You're using her…”
You notice the way his jaw clenches. His eyes are piercing into you.
“If I have no place beside you, then I must find my happiness somewhere else. I don't know how to make you happy anymore.”
He says your name again, but his voice almost doesn't sound like his own.
“I love you, but unless you can prove I mean something to you, until I know you'll pick me first, I can't keep pretending I'm okay.”
You free yourself from his grasp and catch up with the other ladies. Dream stares after you with longing.
