Thinking of reawakening this blog but doing a bit of a rebrand towards sports history? It would be mainly hockey related since thats the main sporting history I’m interested in and focus on.

Just to be clear, this is not a shitpost or a joke. This 22 year old has in fact been appointed mayor of the Welsh town of Bangor.

“The Welsh language has a unique character which reminds me of the country’s landscapes and history. For example, the Welsh version of describing something as “music to my ears” is “mêl ar fy mysedd,” or “honey on my fingers”. To me that’s so much more poetic and sensual than the English idiom, and it reminds me of Wales’ history of poetry and song, and the fact that living in Wales – with its huge mountains, long beaches and 365-day rain cycle – is often a very sensory experience. There is something ancient about that phrase: when I say it I can almost feel how old the Welsh language is. Perhaps the fact that languages are embodied with so much culture and history is why it feels so poignant to forget them, and so painful.”

I love hearing people argue against Welsh, Irish and Scottish independence because they never fail to prove your point for you. Like they hit the nail right on the head and hit themselves with the same fucking hammer at the same time “Wales is too poor for independence!! If they stay in the Union they’re better supported!!” “Actually, if we managed to set our own rates on exports and managed to take control of our own water supply as well as our agricultural and tourism industry we could actually help a lot of marginalized communities in the west of Wales out of poverty and live in economic prosperity healing our nation and restoring faith in our government with clear leadership and better support for our communities respectively. It’s only a result of blatant English colonialism and the desecration of our land, resources and impoverishment of our people that we have the lowest GDP out of the UK.” “Also, technically no. Now that the UK (as we know it) has decided to pull out of the EU we’re technically without a leg to stand on in regards to a lot of our importation and exportation which helps contribute to the livelihoods and economy of the UK. So if Wales had independence, we’d enter the EU, and begin exporting and importing as a member of the EU, therein boosting our economy further and solidifying Inter-European cooperation.” “Welsh is a dying language! There’s no need for it to be in any curriculum!” “You’re incorrect. Over 800,000 people speak Welsh in Wales as well as a small region in Argentina called Patagonia that we colonized. There is actually a revival of Welsh culture and heritage that is happening in the south (The south of Wales is more anglicized) and in in the capital, Cardiff. Even if that was true, which it is not, as there are more parents opting to send their children to Welsh Speaking Schools, the reason for Welsh being perceived as a dead language is a result of English colonialism and the bloody and brutal erasure of Welsh Identity.” “Furthermore, Welsh history, culture and language SHOULD be taught in all Welsh schools, just as you’d expect Spanish culture, history and language to be taught in Spain. Its a matter of deflection from the English state, avoiding having to deal with their history of brutal Celtic colonization and erasure, that they refuse for it to be on our curriculum.” Lol the way they treat you as if you’re stupid and you have no leg to stand on like I, a Welsh woman, who has researched my own history, the pros/cons for independence and come to a viable conclusion, knows less about Wales’s status as a country as well as its capacities than some English bloke that doesn’t really know shit aside from the whole ‘indy bad, they shag sheep hehehehe’ about my country. whenever I see it I laugh. In fact, you could replace the word ‘Welsh’ with Scottish or Northern Irish and it would still be entirely valid in its points (aside from a few statistical variables) supporting independence Fuck Westminister lol

I know it’s a small league and will never garner the kind of attention as the NHL, AHL, KHL, etc, but Zach Sullivan of the Manchester Storm in the EIHL (the hockey league in the UK) came out as bisexual today (January 26, 2020)!
The EIHL is currently (from January 24th to the 26th, or the same weekend as the 2020 NHL All Star Weekend) holding a league wide Pride Weekend. Only a handful of NHL teams have pride nights at all, let alone a league wide weekend.
It may be a small team in a small league in a small country not known for its hockey, but it’s still a huge step. This proves to every young kid that gender and sexuality shouldn’t be the reason they stop playing, that they can be themselves regardless of the toxic masculinity in sports, especially in hockey.
I wish Zach the best, and I’ll be sure to keep an eye on his career!
