INTRODUCTION

I would like to introduce myself, Dr. Vanessa Bikhazi, a periodontist practicing in Newport Beach.

I am a native of Southern California and grew up in Newport Beach. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of California in Irvine. Following graduation, I moved to New York City and studied fashion and spent five years working in the fashion industry.  

Over time, I felt a desire to combine my manual and creative skills with medicine and began to pursue my career in dentistry. I received a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences at Rutgers University and went on to attend NYU College of Dentistry, where I published a paper investigating conditions that pose a risk for osteonecrosis of the jaw unrelated to anti-resorptive therapy. Following graduation, I attended the Periodontics Residency at NYU.  

WHAT IS PERIODONTAL DISEASE ?

Periodontal disease is characterized by the inflammation of gum tissue, presence of disease-causing bacteria and infection below the gum line. Infection and bacteria in the mouth can cause bone loss, tissue recession and even tooth loss. These infections and bacteria can spread beyond the mouth and lead to disease in other parts of the body.

Treatment may include deep cleanings, LANAP (laser assisted new attachment procedure), bone regenerative therapy or gum grafting to restore and strengthen tissues that have been damaged. In addition to the treatment of periodontal disease, periodontists remove non-restorable teeth, replace missing teeth with implants, treat gum recession with grafts and re-contour gums (crown lengthening) to improve the restorations of existing teeth.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you. I am enthusiastic to practice Periodontology and help my patients and other practitioners to achieve oral health.

Meet Dr. John Chrispens

As a minister’s son, Dr. Chrispens lived throughout various parts of the country as he grew up. Before becoming a dentist, he worked as a research chemist. After shadowing two friends in medical and dental school, he saw how significantly a great dentist could impact the individual lives of their patients and began pursuing his career in dentistry.

After completing his dental degree at Loma Linda University, Dr. Chrispens continued his post-doctoral work to earn a certificate in periodontics from Eastman Dental Center and an additional residency in airway/sleep dentistry. He has also served on the faculty at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and in the US Navy Dental Corps before shifting to private periodontal practice in 1981.

Dr. Chrispens’s focus on preventive dentistry and CAMBRA techniques (Caries Management by Risk Assessment) has even taken him to the point of working with NASA research scientists to develop tooth decay prevention mouth rinses that are used by today’s astronauts. His commitment to patients earned him a 5 Star Yelp Award and Top Periodontist in Orange County Magazine.

In his personal time, Dr. Chrispens enjoys photography and growing orchids (some of which are sprinkled throughout our practice.) He also likes to play tennis and golf at Monarch Links. On the weekends, he teaches classes at Laguna Niguel Seventh Day Adventist Church. He and his wife Judy have two grown children and a grandson, Rorke.
