Saw a tweet a couple days ago, about Goffredo telling Aldo that he loves him but Aldo doesn’t say it back because he’s still in love with Thomas so Goffredo says “I’ll wait” or like “take your time.”

And all I could think about is Goffredo doing just that.

He waits.

He waits for years, decades even, grows older and meaner and angrier.

He watches on as Aldo yearns for Thomas, watches from afar as they smile and joke.

He watches as the stress of a papacy campaign tears Aldo apart from the inside but he continues to wait and scheme for his own campaign.

He watches as Aldo’s heart breaks into two as Thomas and that new Cardinal, Vincent, take to each other, a parallel of how Aldo and Thomas were but with a little something more.

He waits patiently as Aldo and him don’t become pope. He watches as Aldo and Thomas come together again but the air around them is different.

He waits in the Casa Santa Mara as long as it takes, realizing that he needs to do some soul searching himself because the person he has become, that person who stood up and shouted the way he did, was pathetic and was never ever going to become pope.

He waits months, then a year.

On a sunny day, his hair grayer than it ever been, Aldo doesn’t keep him waiting any longer.

kicking my legs and giggling over the fact that the turtles so obviously symbolize benitez. ofc we all know the fable of the tortoise and the hare (i know tortoises aren't turtles, but they're closely related enough for it to still work), with its motto of "slow and steady wins the race"- which is exactly how benitez won the papacy, in a way. but also, lawrence mentions that sometimes the turtles stray too far from the pond and get struck by cars in the busy street. near the end of the film, we have a scene of lawrence picking up a turtle and bringing it safely back to the pond; before this was the scene of benitez's confession to lawrence that he's intersex. in turn, the turtle rescue scene so obviously symbolizes lawrence keeping benitez's secret safe and protecting him.
