There are many reasons why I think Draco is so interesting, but if I had to choose one that is most compelling to me, it would be his contradictory nature. He is an emotional and sensitive person, yet he is good at occlumency. He is mean-spirited and loves to antagonize people, but he is also averse to violence. He wants to seem cool and aloof, but his natural personality is expressive and reactive. There are so many layers to his character, which makes him really fun to explore.

But I also think his contradictions make him quite difficult to understand, even for those close to him. In a drarry context, I don’t think Harry would ever fully understand him either, and there would always be sides of Draco that surprise him, even after years of knowing each other. But that might be a good thing for them because Harry thrives on curiosity, and Draco being a puzzle would keep things interesting for him.

It’s truly fucking wild that a) Harry is canonically obsessed with Malfoy and literally follows him around and loses interest in his favourite hobbies because of it, b) Harry is actually right about all his Malfoy theories because he KNOWS Malfoy better than the others and has been paying attention to Malfoy for YEARS in a way no-one else has been, c) Draco straight up refuses to confirm Harry’s identity at the Manor even as his parents practically beg him to and despite knowing the retribution he’ll face if Voldemort finds out, d) Harry specifically saves Draco (not Goyle) from the fire despite the extreme risk of remaining in the room any longer, e) like I’m so serious this is SO INSANE Draco RIDES ON HARRY’S BROOM BEHIND HIM he has his ARMS AROUND HIM they are SHARING A BROOM AS HARRY SAVES HIS LIFE Draco is clinging to him THIS IS A LOVE STORY you can’t make this shit up!!!! f) and it’s DRACO’S WAND that Harry ultimately needs in order to SAVE THE WORLD, and Draco’s wand responds just as well to Harry as the wand of one of his closest, longterm best friends.

Things Draco Malfoy has Done in the Muggle World During His Postwar Probation

Attempted to order from a menu by speaking to it

Almost breached the Statute of Secrecy due to mistaking someone using clap-on-clap-off lights for a muggleborn using wandless magic

Got into a heated argument with the actors in a commercial because he thought the people in the tv were talking to him

Refused to walk in front of a car for fear of bumping into the invisible animals that obviously pull it

Panicked and responded "I have no idea what you're talking about" when asked what the "magic word" is

Complained that his telephone is broken because it periodically emits a loud ringing sound for no apparent reason

Run into Harry Potter unexpectedly in a pub, dropped everything he was holding, and automatically caught it with wandless magic without thinking, thus breaching the Statute of Secrecy in front of 47 muggles and the most famous Auror in Britain

Run into Harry Potter again in the same pub, thanked him for getting him out of those misuse of magic charges and apologized (again) for all of the more unpleasant bits of their history

Accidentally on purpose run into Harry Potter yet again in the same pub to find out why he comes to muggle London so often and how he's doing and to let him know that he's not remotely interested in whether the rumors in the Daily Prophet that he's split up with Ginny Weasley are true (they are)

Met Harry Potter in a pub for drinks to chat about old times except not the sad bits at least until they've had a few

Taken his muggle friends out to a pub that he definitely chose at random but which coincidentally Harry Potter also happens to be walking into so they might as well all sit down together

Had to admit that he may have mentioned him a few times when Harry is shocked to discover that all of Draco's muggle friends seemingly know his name despite the fact that he isn't famous in the muggle world

Met Harry and Harry's friends for drinks and somehow actually had a good time and not been vengefully poisoned by Ron Weasley or cursed by Hermione Granger or stabbed by Neville Longbottom or anything else dreadful

Had to explain to several bemused people that when Luna Lovegood says that they used to live together she doesn't mean they were involved romantically

Invited Harry Potter back to his flat and proudly shown him that he now knows how to make a telephone stop ringing (you just lift it up for a moment and then slam it back down and that fixes it) and then told him off for laughing

Visited Harry Potter at his flat, also in muggle London though protected by the Fidelius Charm for extra privacy, met a very small and excitable owl and had a protracted but good natured argument about which of them was actually better at Quidditch (because obviously if Draco had had a Firebolt he would have won every match)

Got his wand back and immediately transfigured everything in his flat just because he can and because it feels so good to use magic again and then cast Rictusempra on Harry because clearly Draco is the superior dueler and also because he likes the sound of Harry's laugh

Kissed Harry Potter.

Drarry Horcrux Hunting Fic Rec: Where The Shadow Ends on AO3

Where The Shadow Ends by thewitchwholived is a newly-finished Drarry rewrite of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, canon-divergent from Chapter 11 onwards - starting when Remus leaves Grimmauld Place. It is an epic, 65 chapters long. (It is locked on AO3, so only those with an account can read it.)

This is seriously not only the BEST Drarry Horcrux Hunting fic I’ve EVER read, but it has replaced canon in my head. This is Deathly Hallows for me. It doesn’t have NEARLY enough hits or kudos, so I’m spreading the word here because it deserves ALL the love and attention from anyone still sore about Draco’s lack of canonical redemption and the canonical lack of Drarry!!

Draco’s character development, relevance to the plot, and relationships with the Golden Trio are expanded and fleshed out so thoroughly here. Everything JKR ignored, this fic focuses on. You’ll be AMAZED at how beautifully it’s all developed.

Some specific details I must single out for praise:

Draco actually feels like a true Slytherin here, in the BEST ways. His role in the Horcrux hunt brings out his cunning intelligence and remarkable resourcefulness in surprising and satisfying ways. His skills at Potions, Occlumency, and Memory Charms prove invaluable not just to the hunt, but also to the Golden Trio’s safety multiple times. There are so many moments where you think, “wow he’s a GENIUS.” He wasn’t 2nd only to Hermione in school for no reason!!!

Draco gets a really special Patronus.

There is a recurring parallel between Harry’s visions of Voldemort and Draco’s continuous PTSD nightmares about Voldemort. This proves to be a source of intimate empathy and bonding between them that makes the Drarry of it all so profound and believable.

There’s some incredibly sweet scenes where Draco introduces Harry to classical music and to the beach for the first time.

Besides his chemistry with Harry, Draco unexpectedly makes amends and bonds with Ron and Hermione in different ways. Their bad history is not forgotten; they acknowledge it, and it continues to haunt their interactions. Yet they slowly but surely grow together. By the end, Draco feels like a true and unanimously-valued part of the group, and we know he has earned Ron & Hermione’s eventual approval as Harry’s BF.

The four of them share a genuinely heartwarming makeshift Christmas celebration in the tent, at about the halfway point.

Romione still get their special moments, as well as a few beautiful new moments. (Their first kiss is unchanged, don’t worry!)

Dobby, Fred, and Remus are all spared.

#NotAllSlytherins comes into play brilliantly leading up to and during the Battle of Hogwarts, as Blaise, Theo, and Pansy want nothing to do with the Death Eaters and instead help our heroes.

Draco has some truly awesome moments where he finally stands up to his parents, Bellatrix, and even Voldemort himself. (There’s one moment during the final battle that is the absolute 180 antithesis of young Draco’s terrified first reaction to seeing Voldemort in The Philosopher’s Stone.)

Dumbledore and Snape are not idolized or completely forgiven at the last minute. Their flaws are not swept under the rug in the finale, and Harry’s feelings towards them remain complicated, as they should.

Harry becomes master of the Elder Wand through an act of love from Draco, not through combat defeat.

Harry’s NDE is altered in the most beautiful, heartwarming, and tearjerking way. I won’t spoil it; you’ll have to read it for yourself. You’ll find yourself unable to deny that this is exactly what that scene SHOULD have been, and needed to be.

There are some incredible Wolfstar crumbs toward the end, brief but profound.

The fic itself is Harry’s POV, but there are two “spin-offs” that retell two major chapters from Draco’s POV.

A few fair warnings for explicit-Drarry die-hards and canon experts:

Draco and Harry’s slow burn is in fact SO slow that they never technically get together in the fic itself - but they will in the ongoing sequel Where The Light Begins (which updates every Wednesday and Sunday.) Yet one of the upsides to that is it makes the fic feel all the more “real” in terms of fitting established canon - like this COULD have been the official 7th book, if JKR hadn’t hated Draco so much or been so homophobic. The subtextual growth of their feelings is still rich and layered.

Also, several canon plot points are changed, moved around, or omitted entirely due to Draco’s presence. But the alterations are great in their own way, and nothing of substance is lost.

PLEASE check this fic out! You will not regret it!!!

Drarry as Onion Articles (pt. 1?)

I can't get over how downright bizarre the Sectumsempra scene and its aftermath are from a non-drarry perspective. Like, truly without drarry there is just no way to make sense of it.

Let us assume for a moment that Harry has no special or complicated feelings for Draco at all and just dislikes him and views him as an enemy. Furthermore, he suspects Draco of being a Death Eater so much that he follows him around constantly and also gets hit in the head because he gets so distracted while watching him change. And finally he catches Draco saying some incredibly sketchy and incriminating things. And then Draco ATTACKS him. And THEN Draco tries to use an extremely illegal and extremely dark spell on him. A spell that Harry already has very traumatic experience with.

And this is the same Harry Potter who killed Quirrel at age 11, never felt bad about it, and earlier in book 6 even noted that he still believes Quirrel deserved what he got. The same Harry who took Lockhart hostage and made him walk first into a Basilisk's lair so he'd be eaten instead of Harry or Ron. The same Harry who in book 5 was fully prepared to curse a Death Eater whose brain had been regressed to that of a baby because he was an enemy. The same Harry who in book 7 was willing to stun Death Eaters even knowing that this would likely lead to them falling to their deaths.

So this Harry in a desperate act of self defense uses an unknown spell and ends up seriously injuring Draco - an enemy who he feels nothing but dislike for and who just attacked him - and then he feels so crushingly bad for hurting Draco that he has a panic attack on the spot, never reports Draco's suspicious words or use of an illegal spell even though that 100% would've gotten him expelled and jailed, and then completely stops trying to follow him or interrupt his plans??!! What?

No way. If Harry's feelings for Draco are more complicated than simple dislike. If, despite every reason he has to hate him, he can never bring himself to hate Draco and indeed feels drawn to him in a way he doesn't fully understand or want to acknowledge. If they are deeply intertwined and drawn to each other like loadstones. If despite all the odds there is an unspoken affection between them deeper than loyalties or logic that makes them always watch each other and always understand each other and always save each other, then it makes sense.

But as written? Utterly bizarre. And even crazier when you remember that JKR also maintains that Draco is just a simple villain with no complexity or redeeming features.

This whole sequence makes ZERO sense from a Doylist perspective. From a Watsonian perspective though drarry is canon.

All of chapter 7 of Half-Blood Prince is just a series of drarry heart attacks but can we take a moment to appreciate this bit?

"Hi, Neville. Hi, Luna. Guess what?" he added, turning to Harry. "Malfoy's not doing prefect duty. He's just sitting in his compartment with the other Slytherins, we saw him with when we passed." Harry sat up straight, interested.

The mental image of Harry literally sitting up in his seat at the mere mention of Draco's name is so hilarious. Someone needs to draw this. Did Harry's friends ever bring up Draco's name unexpectedly in conversation just to see Harry immediately perk up like a golden retriever puppy?

What’s you favorite Drarry 8th year fanfic? Mine is Aftershocks on AO3, if you haven’t read it I highly recommend this fic! It has 47 chapters, so book long, but it’s amazing and it also has really cool magic and plot development and well as Drarry development!
