“where are you going dressed like that?” niko’s uncle asked as he leaned against the door frame. they had just concluded the latest meeting with the family. thinking everyone had left, niko had pulled out one of his finest suits and was in the middle of buttoning up his white shirt when his uncle appeared. apparently he had stuck around. if it had been anyone else, they would have felt niko’s rage. but it was his uncle and everyone knew that viktor was niko’s right hand man. throwing on his jacket, he shrugged and turned away from the mirror. “i have a date.” viktor’s eyes narrowed. “a russian girl?” niko avoided his gaze by putting on his watch and grabbing his wallet from the top of the dresser. “don’t ask questions you don’t want the answer to, vik.” he walked right by him and down the hallway. “see you later.” and without hearing what his uncle had to say, he left.
he lingered outside of the employee entrance to the hospital. after some prying, which meant niko simply asked the girl at the desk and she nearly had a heart attack, he found out when gianna’s shift ended. when she came out, she literally ran right into him. niko chuckled as he caught her, keeping her small frame from falling to the ground. “careful, babe. no need to go weak kneed on my account.” the smirk that crossed his lips practically stayed in place throughout his quick words about her going out with him, through leading her to his car illegally parked on the street, and all the way until they were quickly seated at a table away from prying eyes at the busy restaurant. his smirk turned devilish at her question about his job. he took his time answering, sipping the wine he hadn’t ordered, but had been delivered on the house. “i guess you could say i run my own business... my family business.”

PLAYING WITH FIRE // gianna & niko
after a long shift, all gianna was looking for was a nice bubble bath and a glass of wine. she seemed to have proved herself because the charge nurse now had her working on the emergency floor, which was thrilling and exciting and all gianna ever wanted but she left work exhausted each night and she was beyond rattled so yes, a nice bubble bath and a large glass of wine sounded perfect. she was headed for that too when she smacked right into niko petrov. she was so exhausted she nearly fell over at their collision but with a charming smile and twinkling eyes, he assisted her. after little to no convincing, gianna found herself sitting across from him at a fancy restaurant. she was no longer dreaming of wine and a bath. how could she when he kept gazing at her like that! he did it once more and like each time before, gianna’s eyes darted away.
the last time she had seen niko he was bloody and bruised, but she had to admit he cleaned up nicely and as he sat across from her with an irresistible smirk on his face, gianna couldn’t help but feel nervous. she wanted to pinch herself, because how real was it that a handsome stranger would ask her out to dinner? she had stitched him up nicely and done her best to leave him with minimal scaring and this was her reward? she had to be dreaming. she sat with a small smile drawn on her face and observed her surroundings. it seemed to be the back room of a restaurant. the front half was crowded, she could tell by the noise level but here they were in a private room with superb service. she was puzzled at how exclusive this was. she was just a nurse and he was? she realized she didn’t know the answer, which caused her inquisitive mind to speak up. “so niko, what is it that you do? do you own this place or?” she released a soft nervous chuckle and sipped on her wine, waiting for his answer.
niko had promised her their food was on its way moments ago like he was working double duty on a date and in the kitchen, but she simply nodded. she was starving though. she had managed to eat half an apple and only peel an orange during her whole twelve hour shift. she was exhausted but something in his eyes made her want to stay awake to watch the ending of this night. she had made herself a promise before moving to new york. she wasn’t going to be one of those girls who came to the city with high expectations and got her heart broken and cried herself all the way home. no ma’am, that wouldn’t be her. she was going to come to new york city, conquer the medical field, and still have her heart intact. but that valuable organ seemed to be on shaky ground now because each time niko looked at her, it sort of wobbled and then swooped to the bottom of her stomach in a flash. she was loving every mysterious glance though. maybe she could have both the killer job and her heart kidnapped.

niko almost smiled when she finally said his name. almost. instead, he looked down at his knuckles that were always red and healing from the last fight he’d been in. he listened to her words about the wound. he didn’t really take it in, though. little did she know, he was an expert on how wounds healed. even with stitches, it didn’t mean he’d take it easy and let it rest. he’d be on the streets again by daylight tomorrow. to show that he at least heard, though, he nodded his head. “thanks.” she wouldn’t hear that come out of his mouth again anytime soon.
hearing her confirm that she didn’t know who he was, that cracked a smile out of niko. he shook his head in awe as he watched her ask if she was supposed to know. “it’d help. for your sake, at least.” her naivete drew him in even more than just her looks. niko was to marry a russian girl. he knew that, but even he was staring at this nurse with a curiosity that had him reconsidering the rules of his family all together. he stepped forward without saying a word, reaching up to brush a piece of hair away from her face that had fallen from her bun. his fingers brushed her cheek, feeling something ignite in him with just one touch. “i’ll be seeing you around, gianna.” with those final words, he walked out of the cove and down the hall, ignoring the stares and gasps from others as he went.

I KNEW YOU WERE TROUBLE // niko & gianna
the sun had set long ago so gianna knew it was well after dark, but when she checked the clock to see it was almost midnight, she couldn’t help but feel deflated seeing her shift was no where near being over. she was still fairly new to saint joseph’s, which meant every vomiting patient or catheter flush went to gianna. it’s not that she assumed she’d be getting all the intense, thrilling jobs right away but she at least hoped that after a year she’d be getting more than she was. she was like the maid that was handed the work no one else wanted to do while everyone else was marveling over the amputated leg down the hall or the man with a knife in his head who was still conscious. that’s the stuff she was really prepared for, though you would never know she was capable because no one ever gave her the chance to prove it.
with a sigh, gianna closed her last patient’s chart and exited the room. the chaos of the hospital was in the north wing and here she was in the east wing with nothing but vomit and more vomit, not to mention mr. jameson, the pervy old man who was roomed right across from the nurse’s station. he often blew her kisses and he winked at her too much when she made her rounds and stopped by his room to check on him. gianna approached the nurse’s station to see the other nurses were busy with patients so she was left alone to chart and do whatever other busy work she came across. she was suddenly hating herself for thinking it was a good idea to take her dog walking so early this morning when she could have slept in. she yawned just as the pager in the pocket of her white coat buzzed. she was being paged to the er aka the north wing where all the excitement happens.
in a flash gianna was zipping out of the nurse’s station and down the hall. the sliding doors open at her approaching motion and suddenly she was no longer hearing only monitors beeping. she was flooded with all sorts of sounds - crying toddler in bed two, vomiting man in bed twelve, bloody woman in bed seven. gianna didn’t even know where to begin! the er was so over filled that they needed her help, which meant finally some hands on work for her. just as she was headed for one bed that caught her eye, the charge nurse found her before she could. “bed ten needs stitches.” gianna took the chart with a less than thrilled look and just as she was about to head off, miranda stopped her. “oh, and be careful with him.” gianna was puzzled until she opened the chart to see his track record. niko petrov, she mouthed his name as she headed for the bed.
throwing the privacy curtain open, gianna announced her presence. “hey there, my name is gianna. i’ll be the nurse stitching you up tonight. where’s the laceration at exactly?” she was still focused on the chart until she looked up to meet the eyes of her very, very attractive patient. his eyes, though one was bruised and slightly swollen, were entrancing. she found herself at a loss for a moment. why was she here again? what was she doing? what was her name? she pressed her once parted lips and tried to focus on the matter at hand. he needed stitches, he was in need of her help but suddenly she was the one who needed help as her oxygen source became extremely limited.

niko nearly laughed at the absurdity that came out of this girl’s mouth.he could have not answered at all, which is usually what his reply would have been. he felt like playing with her, though. he could already tell she was nervous. he had been a good judge of character since he was young thanks to his father’s lessons on watching for tell-tale signs every person gives. smirking slyly, niko replied. “the police? they wish they could do something.” he eyed her for a second longer. “that’s a no, babe.” he sent her a wink.
he listened to her name again. this time he committed it to memory. he nodded as he did this, showing her that he got it. silence spanned again as she worked, so he looked for something to say. “it’s niko.” when she looked at him in confusion, he added. “you called me mr. petrov. that’s my father. i’m niko.” he said all of this with a charming smile. he watched her finish up and inspected the newly stitched wound. niko knew what bad versus stitch job looked like, and this one was good.
two fingers under his chin, niko flinched. he wasn’t used to someone touching him without his permission. this girl really was different, but all niko could think as she asked if he needed ice was that she needed to be taught. and most of all, he wanted to be the one to teach her. he dropped his hand on her hip when she turned away, but once again, his eyes never wavered. “no, that’s not necessary.” suddenly, he was all business. standing up, he pulled his sleeve back down - gently, though - and furrowed his brow in concentration as he looked at her. “do you not know who i am?”

niko scowled at the words “stitches.” despite being used to pain, he hated having to get stitches. he had enough scars along his body to prove that he knew pain. gunshot wounds, knife cuts - he was used to it all. he would never be used to stitches, though. the only bright side was the pretty girl in front of him. his eyes followed her when she turned away, going down to her ass when her back was to him. he didn’t immediately look up when she faced him again, smirking when he finally saw her expression at finding him checking her out.
as she worked, niko finally let his gaze tear away from her. he shut his eyes, listening to her movements and feeling her fingers on his arm. now that he was sitting still, he realized how much energy he had loss in such a short amount of time. every bit of adrenaline he had built up dealing with levi was gone. he couldn’t wait to be finished here and head gome. maybe for once he’d sleep more than four hours. when she said it might hurt, niko grunted in reply, but held in any sign of being in pain. he noted she was quiet as she worked. no doubt she was concentrating hard on what she was doing in order to not mess up on nikolai petrov. but moments later when she called him “mr. petrov,” he realized she didn’t know who he was.
eyes flashing open, he stared at her for a moment with his brows pulled together before he replied. “if i told you, i’d have to kill you.” and he meant it. girls like her didn’t know what men like him did. they knew he was bad, but not just how bad. then again, this girl could be different. her not knowing who he was was proof enough. reaching with his good arm, he placed his hand on her hip and felt the heat seeping from her uniform. “got a name?”

niko was calculating how long it would take to snap his arm into two and put a bullet between his eyes. that’s how angry he was. he hadn’t expected to come across levi sanders when he went out for groceries. he hadn’t expected the guy to pull a knife on him either. hell, levi knew better than to even be within petrov territory. and yet here he was, holding a knife up to niko’s throat as if he could actually win. “i know you killed my brother, nikolai. everyone in town knows.” he paused as niko inhaled deeply and suppressed the need to roll his eyes. “and now you will pay for it... with your life.” levi went to slip the knife across niko’s throat, but he wasn’t quick enough. niko had his arm twisting back until it made a gross cracking sound. the man wailed, but if anyone on the street next to the dingy alley they were in heard, they didn’t come to help.
as niko grabbed for his gun tucked in his waistband, levi slashed the knife at his opponent and ripped open the flesh at his forearm. the grunt niko gave was drowned out by the gunshot that rang out. he had shot levi in the knee, causing the man to drop the knife and fall. he was cursing and screaming at niko. still, no one came to see what was going on. giving a conniving grin, niko bent down until he was in the man’s face. the color in levi’s face was gone as he stared into the dark soul that was nikolai petrov. “i didn’t kill your brother.” niko said, slowly taking his time. “but i will kill you.” and with that, he stood and aimed the gun straight for where he planned to moments before: between the eyes.
niko didn’t stick around after that. he darted back onto the street and in the direction of his apartment. he was halfway there when he started to feel lightheaded. he was confused at first. usually after a kill, he felt exhilarated. then it dawned on him to check his wound. pulling back his sleeve, he groaned at how much blood was pouring from the deep cut. he was surprised he hadn’t railed the substance all the way up the sidewalk or caused an uproar from a passerby. glancing up ahead, he knew the hospital was only a block or two away. he could get stitched up and head home within minutes with his reputation. no one would make him wait.
when he walked into the e.r., everything became hush. all eyes were on the figure that had entered. the nurse behind the main desk was pale and had a look of terror on her face when he approached. “i need stitches and i don’t want to fucking wait.” she didn’t respond at first. slamming his fist down on the desk, she let out a squeak and jumped. “now!” he was shown to a bed far away from the other patients and left with only a quick “the nurse will be right in.” he scowled. he took off his jacket and held his hand over the wound. he was about to start yelling and tearing out of the cove when the curtain tore back and there stood the most beautiful girl. he could tell she was tongue tied, which made his signature smirk pop up. “left arm.” he showed her as he spoke, but kept his eyes on her.

Full Name
Nikolai Aleks Petrov AKA Niko or Nikky (family only).
D.O.B. & Age
May 10, 1987 & 28 years old.
Birthplace
New York City, New York, USA.
5 Personality Traits
Brooding, arrogant, daring, quick-witted, aggressive.
Clothing Style
Color is not a part of Niko’s wardrobe. Everything he owns is black, grey, navy, or white. He prefers dark colors, because it allows him to blend in with the dark when needed. He can mostly be found in a pair of jeans, a white or gray t-shirt, black boots, and either a dark hoodie or a leather jacket. When the time calls for it, he owns a few suits and can clean up quite nicely.
History
Niko was born into royalty... only it wasn’t the kind of royalty you might think of. His father was the boss of a notorious mafia that operated in New York and New Jersey. Being that he would be next in line for the “pakhan,” or boss, Niko was treated with the utmost respect - even as a child surrounded by grown men. He was feared in school due to his family name, so he didn’t have many friends outside of his family tree. Both of his parents took their Russian heritage seriously and made a rule within the group that no one should marry outside of Russian bloodlines. When he finished high school, Niko was immediately thrown into the heat of things within the mafia. His father wanted him to learn from the ground up, so he made Niko start out as an errand boy, before climbing his way up to underboss by the time he was twenty-five.
He was content with his status within the family, but a year ago, his father had a massive heart attack and died suddenly. The mafia allowed only a day to mourn before Niko was thrown onto the throne, so to speak. With the backing of his favorite uncle, Niko expanded the “business” to include three other Russian families and take over Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. At the age of twenty-eight, Niko has everything... except a wife and family. The only problem is that none of the girls in the Russian family catch his eye. Is he willing to break his parent’s rules or will he declare a new law?
Setting
New York City, New York.
