St. Canard Prom: Oh, what a night!
For those of you who are new to this site: Meet my girl Kara J. Downwright, haunting the DW-verse since 2006. You might know her as that older, mostly sensible, 80s-loving, cookie-baking science wiz with a PhD in Applied Mathematics, a job at S.H.U.S.H. and a house right next to the Mallards. But back then, at that fateful St. Canard Prom she looked like this. Drake finally plucked up the courage and asked his friend to prom, but was rejected, due to her already having a date. As we all know, during the prom night, Drake dressed up as Darkwing Duck for the first time and fought their common classmate Elmo Sputterspark a.k.a. Megavolt… and the rest is friendzoning-history. ;D
This is in fact my entry for @merani-draws and my little drawing challenge over there in the wild waters of Instagram. It’s the first thing I’ve been hosting so far and it’s incredibly exciting what you come up with. So… want to join? Here’s the prelude…
Being avid “Darkwing Duck”-aficionados for decades we’ve had an awful lot of time to consider many meaningful questions, such as this one: Why is that horrible St. Canard Prom so essential for most of our original characters and what exactly happened that night? Well, apart from the fact that Elmo Sputterspark turned into Megavolt and that a certain duck going by the name of Drake the Dweeb saved the day with a disco ball, that is… 😂 So, here’s your chance. This one goes out to all of you who created a “Darkwing Duck”-OC: Tell us what happened to your OC that fateful night in St. Canard. The rules are simple, for there are hardly any. 😅 Use the picture above as a backdrop for your OC or simply create your own. When you post your entry, use #stcanardprom as well as @merani-draws and @splatterphoenixart so we’ll see your art. There’s no deadline, we just want you to have fun! 👍🏻 Let’s get dangerous, everybody!

@splatterphoenixart and I are hosting a challenge on Instagram! We hope that many OCs join us and tell us their stories. :) What happened when Megavolt attacked St. Canard High School? Where were they that particular night, how were they involved? Did they run for cover, did they stay to root for Darkwing, didn’t they go at all, …? Hop over to Instagram to find out more and join the party! You can find us under [at]merani_draws and [at]sandrasartgallery. Spreading the word is immensely appreciated!

Ada and Nora share the same main weakness. Ada is too deeply in love with Negaduck and Nora is too deeply in love with Darkwing Duck. Though the ways they share this weakness are different.
Ada is head-over-heels. She would do anything for Negaduck. It puts her in a dangerous position to being used by him if he ever got bored of her.
Nora can’t understand that she is being constantly rejected. She is only going to end up emotionally hurt by her one-sided love for Darkwing Duck.
Another weakness for Ada is not being physically strong. For Nora another weakness would be not being fully in touch with the reality of what’s going in front of her.

Day 4 - Your DWD OC’s special ability (super power, talent, hobby, etc)
Ada and Nora do not have super powers.
In her free-time, Ada likes to draw, write and read. When she is helping out Negaduck, her talent is sometimes being the brains of the situation in mindsets that Negaduck fails to use. He also relies a lot on the fact that she is smart when they’re in tough situations. Ada is uninterested in using her talents and hobbies for the sake of being good.
Nora is talented in the fashion area. She makes dresses for a living and even made the one she is wearing. Although talented with sewing, she is not very smart like her sister. Tending to be overtaken by her emotions, she acts out on them regularly. Rarely in appropriate ways. Darkwing, who is tired of being constantly chased by her for kisses and hugs, has learnt this the hard way. Nora’s hobby is chasing after Darkwing; due to her unrealistic dream that he will someday love her back.

Day 3 - Your DWD OC’s design details
Tumblr media
Ada: (Casual attire + general description) Wears a pink hoodie with a red heart on and a black headband. Her feathers make a short choppy fringe on the top of her head. Has a thin feather strand that sticks out like frizzy hair. The rest of the feathers on the back of her head look like she has short hair. She has some tufts nearer to the front with a semi-circle shape. Her eyelashes are coated with pink eyeshadow, like how Daisy Duck wears the make-up. Has a light yellow beak and legs. Her tail has a distinctive almost peacock-like shape to it, but a lot smaller. It has 6 separate feathers to it
(Supervillain attire) Wears a black cropped jacket that is zipped up half way up to the tuft in the middle of her chest. The jacket has “NEGA” embroidered into the back. Wears red stockings. Instead of her black headband, she wears a red headband. Ties a black mask around her face to disguise herself. Her eye makeup is not noticeable when she has the mask on.
Nora: Her eyes are blue with black eyeshadow on the eyelids. Wears a light green evening dress and a red beaded choker. Has her hair-like feathers tied up into a high ponytail. Like her sister, she also has semi-circle shaped tufts of feathers closer to the front of her head. 3 of those semi-circles form a fringe on the front of her head. She has a light yellow beak and legs. Her feet are covered by dark green high-heeled shoes which are very rarely seen due to her dress length. Although it’s unnoticeable when she’s wearing a dress, Nora also has the peacock-like tail feathers. Unlike her sisters 6, she only has 4.

Day 2 - Your DWD OC’s backstory
Although Ada and Nora don’t have the most notable backstories ever, according to their parents, the Lovebird family has a history of being involved with crime in some way or another.
One day, Ada and Nora’s parents, Ivy and Daryl got their 2 daughters to sit down for a much dreaded “story time” detailing their family history. During that story-time, it was evident to see Ada and Nora had a strained relationship as sisters.
Ada and Nora’s clashing personalities had led them to dislike each other.
It started when Nora had reached her first teenage years. She and Ada would realise they had opinions that differentiated way too much to ever get along. They argued a lot over the most stupid things.
In the end, it would lead Ada to spend her days outside in St Canard. Sometimes even sleeping in hotels, (using money from various jobs she tried out), so she could get away from Nora. She was fed up with having her sister’s bad takes drilled into her ears on a regular basis.
Then, on one thankful day, she received information from their parents that Nora was moving out. Oh, Ada’s congratulatory speech to her sister couldn’t have been any more fake than it was. It had that underlying “Get the hell out” vibe about it, and she knew she was incorporating her shitty attitude into it to give Nora a hint.
As their parents had come to a close on the story, Ada and Nora violently argued with each other. Ivy had to break up their argument. She moved them into separate rooms to get them to calm down.
Ada and Nora would never get along again.

Day 1 - Introduce your DWD OC(s)
Ada Lovebird was not much more than a regular civilian in St Canard during the 20 years before her life would take a dramatic spin.
One day, she was kidnapped by the well-known evil doppelganger of Darkwing Duck, known as Negaduck. Negaduck had been kidnapping random duckladies from St Canard to frame Darkwing Duck.
While Ada was held captive by the notable supervillain, she fell deeply in love with him. A classic case of Stockholm Syndrome. Though our captive ducklady of this introductory story was likely not all there in other ways.
Ada, after weeks and weeks of desperately stalking Negaduck, had finally managed to get a chance to converse to her love interest. At first, the duck in the yellow suit only expressed his annoyance with the duck who wore a pink hoodie. This annoyance turned into genuine interest as she kept speaking. Something about Ada clicked with his schemes; not just in a way that could be described as ulterior motives. This feeling was only unfamiliar to Negaduck, but he enjoyed the thrill of it.
The interest was mutual.
Prepared for the day this may happen, Negaduck stripped Ada of the pink hoodie that he couldn’t express anything but distaste for which took her black headband off in the process. Flustered by the way too sudden interaction, Ada crossed her arms over her chest. Negaduck threw over some clothes for her to get changed into, turned around and waited. His lower beak was rudely agape after the ducklady requested him to turn around.
Ada was dressed in a zipped cropped leather jacket with “NEGA” stitched into the back, her chest fluff blocked off part of the zip only allowing it to go halfway, red knee-high socks covered her legs, a red headband was now placed on her head neatly instead of the black headband and she had a black mask typed around her face.
This would mark the start of her and Negaduck’s partner-in-crime relationship.
As events progressed, Negaduck and the unfortunate Darkwing Duck would learn about Ada’s little sister, an 18 year old known as Nora Lovebird. She was a tall duck, (unlike her older sister,) who dressed in a green evening gown and always wore her feathers in a high ponytail. Her eyes were sky blue. Much like her sister, she also had a thing for narcissistic costume ducks. Nora would persistently bug Darkwing on many occasions, hoping that she could win him from Morgana. Darkwing would only be bothered by her. Negaduck could barely believe the two duckladies were sisters. They barely resembled each other, in looks nor personality. But they were.
Both Darkwing and Negaduck had somehow been dragged into the mess of the Lovebird family. And they would only get more infamous as their bad reputation spread throughout St Canard.

Darkwing OC Month Day 14: Meet a St. Canard Supervillain.
DWD ‘91 version:
Tumblr media
Spoiler for Blue Waltz (but not a big one). Farther in the story, Charity and a bunch of her girl friends go out to dance clubs. At this time in the story, Charity is dating Drake, and she invites him to come with them, but Drake refuses (for reasons he won’t explain). While at the dance club, Charity meets a suave rooster who turns out to be a great dance partner.
Steelbeak, every once in a while, he comes to St. Canard not for any villainy reason but because they have the best dance clubs. He goes in disguise (his disguise is basically painting his beak which is surprisingly effective for the most part). Usually, he finds a good-looking girl, dance the night away and then fools around with her for a few days before returning to FOWL. However, since Charity isn’t that type of girl, not to mention she has a boyfriend, she’s not into Steelbeak.
But they both agree that they have never had a better dance partner.
Meanwhile, SHUSH finds out about Steelbeak’s routine and sends an agent to shadow him. The SHUSH agent sees that Charity has befriended Steelbeak and considers using her to trap Steelbeak. Then Darkwing finds out and he’s all, “You want to do WHAT with my girlfriend?”
Ducktales 2017 version:
Tumblr media
Being a fan of the Darkwing Duck TV show, Charity has her favorite villains, her top two are Morgana (kind of a villain) and Splatter Phoenix. So of course if she was sent into a different dimension where Darkwing Duck and all the characters were real, she would totally geek out over these two despite the fact that they might just kill her.

Darkwing OC Month Day 15: Negaverse Counterpart
DWD 91 Version:
Tumblr media
There is a lot of detail with this. After Negaduck was lost in the space between worlds during the episode “Life, the Negaverse and Everything,” St. Canard went through a transitional period as different groups fought for territory. The Friendly Four, in the wake of Negaduck’s disappearance, tried to take over the city (in a good way, of course) but has only been able to protect a third of the city. SHUSH has control over another third, and why the organization is strong, they also have a lot on their hands fighting FOWL and making the world believe that they aren’t a terrible terrorist group.
The last third of the city is controlled by a trio of masked women who run their territory with their rules. Negaverse Neptuna uses her power over the sea to control what is brought in and out of St. Canard, giving the group money and power. Negaverse Morgana is a quiet and reserved woman, and most of the time works away from the limelight, but is very good at creating magical amulets to help Negaverse Charity rule over their section of St. Canard.
By day, Charity is a public defender who puts men behind bars. It doesn’t matter if they’re guilty of the crime, she puts them behind bars by any means necessary whether it be coercion, bribery, threats, blackmail or falsifying evidence. By night, she puts on the disguise of The Nightingale who patrols the streets and creates a safe haven for women and children who have nowhere else to go due to abusive husbands or parents.
The Nightingale is also an assassin for hire, taking money to kill targets with little regard of whether they are good or bad people. She has worked for both SHUSH and FOWL to do their dirty work. However, if she hears about someone abusing their child…well, she’ll kill them for free.
The amulet that she wears around her throat (that Morgana made her) can put a person asleep or hypnotize them with a song. The amulets on her wrists help disguise her (since lovebirds aren’t common, so they just obscure her features).
A little more history about Negaverse Charity and Morgana. Morgana used to work for the good guys but after an accident that almost got her killed, Negaduck seduced her and persuaded to work with him on the side of bad. They dated for quite a while until he cheated on Morgana with Charity (Charity having not met either of them before and didn’t know Negaduck had a girlfriend.) When the two found out about his infidelity, they became best friends, bonding over their desire to kill Negaduck. This and the fact that Negaduck has been terrible to Negaverse Gosalyn, Negaduck is at the top of Charity’s personal hit list.
Ducktales 2017 Version:
Tumblr media
Since the Negaverse doesn’t exist (nor do I think it ever will if DWD gets a reboot) in the reboot, I’ve been playing around with an idea of a Mirror World, which has the same basic concept as the Negaverse. In this Mirror World, Charity’s curse is a little bit different. Instead of falling in love with heroes, she can make men fall in love with her. Because of this power, her family has been pulling the strings of men in power for centuries.
When Charity decided to make a power play on Duckburg, she immediately went to the easiest target for money, making Mark Beaks fall in love with her. She married him and has been using him for years to buy up as much property as she can surrounding Duckburg and finding ways of pushing Scrooge McDuck out. When there was news of a masked duck appearing in St. Canard, Charity hunted Darkwing Duck down and made him hers. After a wardrobe change, he became Deathwing Duck and is now her personal bodyguard/assassin. (Yes, his costume is based off of Darkwarrior Duck. I like the name Deathwing Duck better than Darkwarrior, and I removed the chest spikes because that doesn’t make sense. He could hurt himself with those.)
Strangely enough, Charity did not use her power on Launchpad. The two have been in love since they ran into each other as teenagers while robbing the same gas station. Since then, they have ben inseparable and unstoppable.
Her next move is to get Gizmoduck on her side. She believes if she can seduce Gizmoduck with her powers, then Scrooge McDuck would be vulnerable and easily driven out of Duckburg. Unfortunately, Scrooge has had experience and prior knowledge of her family’s powers and has taken drastic measures against her.

Day 2 - Backstory
Mirage was a stage actor about to make their huge breakthrough as the lead in an upcoming play. But before opening night, their jealous understudy attacked them, leaving them in a condition unfit to perform. However, the incident left permanent damage; Mirage not only lost their golden opportunity, but their voice along with it.
Thus begins the fall of Mirage Waddleson.

Day 1 - Introduction
Meet Ophelia, the quiet kappa daughter of the Fearsome Four. She’s a bit distant from her family because she wants to separated herself from the criminal lifestyle that the rest of her siblings adopted from their dads - even so, she loves them dearly. Day 27: Favorite DWD OC you've created
That's gotta be Ichabod Crane (a.k.a. Cyrus Crane, a.k.a. Bill Crane, a.k.a. Sander Crane; everyone knows him by a different alias) for sure!
Although I technically created other DWD OCs (Mags, Old Lady Pigeon, Hatchet, Sarah, Blake), they're all connected to Ichabod one way or another and are still relatively underdeveloped compared to him.

Day 26: FREE SPACE
Let's talk about the Goodfella's.
Ichabod's pride and joy. A little hole-in-the-wall joint located in one of St. Canard's shadier neighborhoods, modeled and built out of a Prohibition Era speakeasy. Favorite watering hole of many St. Canard criminals, not only for the drinks but also for the bartender's "side business".
Underneath the bar lies a series of secret underground passages and chambers, previously used by smugglers and mobsters during the Prohibitionism, which now serve in Ichabod's side business as a way to move around unnoticed, for secret meetings and storage.
Then there are Ichabod's "associates" really a found family of sort but he's got a hard time admitting it:
Maggie "Mags" Piers - the Goodfella's waitress, barmaid-in-training and entertainer, an Australian magpie, her charming smile and pretty eyes hide quite the cunning mind and a sharp tongue to match her outspoken, independent personality. She's a skilled thief and con artist.
Paloma Pidge - also known as "Old Lady Pigeon", apparently an unassuming homeless pigeon with a fee screws loose who tends to hang around the Goodfella's; in truth she's much smarter and sharper than she lets on, using the façade of a loony homeless pigeon to hide in plain sight while spying on people.
Cyrus "Hatchet" Hatchetson - an old tufted puffin, a grizzled, no-nonsense sailor who works as Ichabod's main supplier for his bar and black market contact in exchange for free drinks and a place to sleep in when he stops in St. Canard.
Blake Swann - a black swan, Ichabod's childhood friend, son of a former orphanage worker who now works at St. Canard Orphanage himself, he helped Ichabod hide his past as an orphan and keeps an eye on his sister Sarah on his behalf; he was born mute and communicates via sign language or through a text-to-speech converter.
