Today I'm going to be reviewing Attack on Titan episode one and I'd like to preface this with the fact that I watched the first few episodes way back when easily 6 years ago now and I hated it so today we are going to see if it's as bad as I remember
8 minutes in and I just gotta say there is this concept called "show don't tell" they think since it's a fantasy world they have to explain everything to us yet early the things they were expositing is pretty nicely shown so it feels kinda ham fisted also I hate Eren's (the main character) characterization so far it's really in my face and that could work for some characters but to me the way he is portrayed seems unintentionally overzealous and naive as well as being kinda too sure of his beliefs and that's fine but it doesn't seem intentional though I'll have to see how this pans out
Pupil wigle that is all
Mikase (I ligit have no clue how to spell it or if that is the sister's name) is fucking weird like I don't get what's up with her but I remember when I was younger I had really weird feelings about her maybe I'll find out why or maybe not
It's mikasa and apparently my auto correct new that I suspect my my phone of being a weeb
Everything about armin is just wrong and if all the names continue to be this weird I'm gonna start making up my own but like seriously what kinda 12 year old talks like that armin (at least they seem to be around that age)
This foreshadowing isn't heavy handed no this foreshadowing is like someone trying to discreetly drive a train through your living room jesus fuck
Oh for fuck sake have some respect jesus christ I don't mind blood and gore but that's fucking tasteless well maybe the titan would disagree but still fucking really
Okay so I just finished the first episode so here are my thoughts
The art style is beautiful even if I personally think the aggressive outlines are a little extra that's just a personal think otherwise very beautiful even with wiggling eyes
The story is okay I guess a bit heavy handed but a decent setup even if I find the characterization to be peculiar at points over all it works except mikasa the fuck is her deal
The actual dialogue was fairly decent overall pretty unremarkable it was never fantastic but never egregious except the part with the returning scout and the mother I found that to be just like way to extra for what it is
Overall it's a pretty decent episode but I think I might understand why the show is so polarizing and I think that's the spectacle
Don't get me wrong most people love spectacle but you have to balance spectacle with something else and for some maybe that's not the case or maybe for some the overly dark story is a good balance but the sight of the giant titan peering over the wall or the crazed looking titan that ate eren's (I think that's a stupid spelling but I'm also an asshole so) mom they didn't make me go wow look at these awesome and terrifying creatures I thought this wasn't earned
Okay so let me clarify why I said I don't think it was earned by being super nerdy so in other fantasy stories such the lord of the rings or harry potter or even percy Jackson we get introduced to the world and the people in it and you come to care for these peopand places that's why in Harry Potter we don't get anything too massive and scary till nearly the end and you might say the cyclops is giant spectacle but its building our character's motivations and personalities and I'd have loved if we had eren standing up to bullies or confronting his sister or an authority figure to help build up who he is as a character before the biggest damn titan ever busts through the walls and I get that his character building happens after these events but I'm not invested in the world or its characters so I don't really care when the walls break or feel anything except annoyed at the creator when Eren's mom dies
But overall I guess I give this a 7/10 or a 67/100
It's good but personally I think it's not a great start it's more of a stumble
