āThese were not protesters, they were a mob. I was there. A private Jewish guest going to a private reception when set upon by the Creating Change mob. I have been an activist with a decades-long pedigree of working in large and small ways for social justice. I have faced down Jerry Falwell, debated on TV with top spokespeople from Family Research Council and Focus on the Family. I have sat on a plane surrounded by fundamentalist anti-gay PromiseKeepers. I have NEVER faced such a mob of indiscriminate hate. ALL of us were called āmotherfucking racistsā, compared to the Ku Klux Klan and when in the room, several of them broke in and were screaming that we werenāt really queer and queer activists, that we were killing babies in Israel. It was assault in that we were surrounded, denied passage, verbally abused and we saw what happened if someone shouted back. The gentleman who is described as āgrabbing a Palestinian flagā was in fact attacked by that protester. He was wearing a Yarmulke, and the protester wrapped the flag over his face, covering his eyes, nose and face and jerked his head back. I personally know many of the attendees, who have given much of their lives and treasure to multiple social justice causes, including that of people of color and to supporting organizations like Jerusalem Open House. We were all tarred with this brush of hate, indiscriminately. Jerusalem Open House was founded about 20 years ago as a community center for Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs and Palestinians. These were brave LGBT activists in the middle east who have created real, true, positive change. Yet this event to welcome and help raise money for them to continue their activities was shut down hatefully not by the religious right, not by ISIS, but by other LGBT activists. ā¦.We were not allowed to pass to our āsafe spaceā ā and in fact one of the protesters inside our reception screamed in my face that we did not deserve safe space. A website called the Electronic Intifada posted video of the event with the note āNo peace! No justice!ā Featured in the video was a leading Rabbi of Chicago ā an incredibly gentle, yet strong consistent voice for kindness and justice in our community, including justice for people of color, for workers, for interfaith respect and dialogue. He has been a force of humanity and care at our congregation for people in crisisā¦. ā¦.I have been violated and my friends and co-religionists have been attacked and libeled. I am physically sick from the violence and anti-Semitism that clearly singled us out and turned every one of us from Jews with long accomplished records of commitment to justice into demons worthy of their verbal and physical violence. And how they crow on their websites about how wonderful they were!ā
ā LGBT activist Alan Amberg, who founded LesBiGay Radio in 1994, describing Creating Change 2016,Ā Ā https://www.washingtonblade.com/2016/01/26/readers-respond-to-creating-change-controversy/

I just had to read the words "Labubuvitscher Rebbe" with my own two eyes so now you do too.
Translation: Panel 1 "Say, Rabbi, aren't you worried that fewer and fewer young people go to synagogue?" Panel 2 "Don't worry, I know how they will come on their own!" Panel 3 "Wow, the Labubuvitcher Rebbe!!!"
The Jüdische Allgemeine, a weekly newspaper in Germany published by the Zentralrat der Juden in Deutschland (Central Council of Jews in Germany), has these little comic strips and this was the comic strip this time.

The thing with antisemitism is that for the majority of those who engage in it, it's rarely with the explicit intention to harm jews. Instead it's viewing jews as an acceptable casualty to release whatever frustration or anger you have with society or the world.
And that's what makes it so dangerous.
That's why antisemitism is the chameleon of bigotry. The jew is both the capitalist and the communist. Both the all-powerful shadow government and sub human.
It's also why it's so hard to combat.
Because it's common to excuse antisemitic actions under the guise of "no I'm targeting this other group" whilst mainly targeting the jewish members of said group and quietly moving the goalpost to include more and more jews into said group.
When you view jews as an acceptable casualty in your fight against whatever issue, you are deeming antisemitism as an acceptable bigotry. That it's okay that jews suffer as long as whatever issue gets resolved.
And not only does it harm jews, it also doesn't benefit your movement. Jews don't hold the majority of the world's wealth. Jews don't hold the majority of the world's power.
Targeting jews allows those who do hold the wealth and the power, to quietly throw jews under the bus, to engage in centuries old rhetoric to assure their survival and to keep exploiting people.
And this isn't to say that people aren't intentionally antisemitic. Many people are. Many people know they're antisemitic and will either own it or purposefully paint a mask to hide it.

I'm sorry but if a jew tells you something is antisemitic and your first action is to defend said thing instead of trying to find out why said thing is antisemitic, you are antisemitic.
9.5/10 the thing is genuinely going to be antisemitic for a reason you don't likely know because you don't know the nuance and lived experience of being jewish.

A while ago, there was a war between Israel and my country, Iran. Honestly, it was terrifying. And even though there's a ceasefire now, the danger still hasnāt completely gone away.
It made me realize that people who donāt live in the Middle East and only watch from a distance often donāt fully understand whatās really happening.
I donāt support the Israeli governmentās policies, but the government of my own country ā the Ayatollahs ā is responsible for most of the instability in the region. During the war, they shut down the internet, we had no shelters, no warning sirens, and barely any reliable news sources.
In my opinion, Iran was more to blame in this war than Israel or the U.S. The people who were supposed to protect us didnāt.
I think the same applies to the situations in Palestine and Lebanon too.
Governments like Iranās, Hamas, and Hezbollah are the reason people here live in fear, poverty, and insecurity. They care more about ideology than peopleās lives.
Thatās something a lot of people outside the Middle East just donāt see.
Itās like your internet was completely shut down by the Ayatollahs for several days. Then, when you finally manage to connect to the outside world, you realize that some white people who shout āFree Palestineā have suddenly become supporters of Khamenei and other bearded leaders of Middle Eastern governments. Honestly, those white people arenāt really in a position to give political opinions. Just shut the fuck up.

We've made disagreement feel like betrayal
Disagree and you're disloyal.
Ask questions and you're a traitor.
Change your mind and you've "sold out."
So people nod along with ideas they don't fully believe...just to avoid exile.
We've flattened discourse into team sports. You're either with us or you're the enemy.
Know how honest, thoughtful people stay honest and thoughtful?
By engaging constructively in disagreement.
