MORE BEAST THAN MAN, Dread Pirate was Jack Odyssey’s main rival for several years during the gang’s rise to notoriety. A fellow outlaw known for his cruelty and affinity for burning things, Dread Pirate stole jobs right out from under the noses of the Odyssey all the way up until his public execution in 2346. In attempting to save his own skin, he tried to give up the previous location of Jack Odyssey, but by the time The Faith got around to following that lead, they were already gone. No one knows who actually captured him. Some, in fact, say that he turned himself in over a tide of bad blood turning against him. If asked about him, Jack Odyssey will say that Dread Pirate, awful as he was, at least died rich.

Your first TASK is to write about at least one NPC that’s played a role in your character’s life. Be they friend or foe, we want to see you explore how they shaped or changed your character. Some questions to ask might be: how did they meet? How long did they know one another? What would your character think of them now, and what would they think of your character? Are they still alive? Anything under the sun! These NPCs can be former members of the Jack Odyssey gang — or rivals — if you wish. This task DOES count towards activity but is not required to be posted. If you do complete this task, don’t forget to tag it with #dusttask, and have fun! ©

Congratulations, RED! You’ve been accepted for the role of Quarter, with Byun Jungha. There aren’t enough words to describe how thrilled we were over your portrayal, Red. Quarter is a complex character, and they’re among the ones in our cast that I’d say are trickier to flesh out. But not only did you flesh them out, you added more to them and unraveled the character in a way that made her wholly your own. The level of detail across your app was incredible, especially in the arc section, but also in the writing sample. I loved the way you took lines from the bio and gave them deeper meaning with the scenes you wrote, and the overall exploration of Quarter’s journey was wonderful to behold. Can’t wait to see more of her!

Congratulations, MIMZ! You’ve been accepted for the role of Widower May I, with Sen Mitsuji. The decision for Widower was so difficult, as each applicant added so much to the character in their own unique way. But your app left us in utter awe, Mimz. There were so many incredible things about it, but I have to say that the most astounding one has to be the sheer understanding you have for Widower. It was a joy reading through your analysis of them in the character arc section, and everything you explored and unwrapped in it tied so beautifully into the writing sample afterwards. It all made for such a compelling, intricate portrayal. We absolutely cannot wait to see him on the dash!

Congratulations, FIA! You’ve been accepted for the role of Witness, with Chase Sui Wonders. Wow, Fia, we were blown away by the work you did with Witness. It felt like she slotted into the world of Dust like she’d been there the entire time. From the worldbuilding to the characterization, alongside the heartwrenching journey that Witness has had to go through just to find her place in a world that would eat her alive, we were enraptured. We’re especially excited to see what can be done with Chevelle, later down the line, and how that impacts Witness’ experience and journey. We can’t wait to see how things unfold!

Congratulations, JEM! You’ve been accepted for the role of Hellion, with Boyd Holbrook. Wow, Jem, this app checked just about every box we were looking for in a Hellion application and more. Your attention to detail and in-character voice nailed home the portrayal of someone who wants something but is digging their heels into the dirt the minute they start to head towards it. Each scene in your writing sample really lent itself well to showing us who Hellion is and what’s important to him, and we were able to understand him better because of it, in spite of his flaws. We’re looking forward to seeing Hellion on the dashboard, divinity drawn in his eyes and all. Congratulations!

not sure if you had a specific idea in mind for this, but is there a maximum amount of time you envision hellion having been with the gang or is that utp? their bio says they haven't been with the gang long so would 1 year be acceptable or that too long?

We didn't have a maximum amount of time in mind, no! One year is totally acceptable.
