synopsis.

born in the heart of oregon, nicolás had been raised within a normal yet traditional family. the third child and second born son, he had been deemed the middle child. and tasked with far more responsibilities than one should. but he had taken it all in stride. had lavished in the responsibilities. for a spell. before the typical wants of a young boy had been made known. when he'd wanted to run off with his friends, and get into the kind of trouble one his age should.

that is. until he had found himself in the hospital that first time. in the beginning, the doctors hadn't known precisely what had been wrong with him. most of the tests had come back normal. no oddities or elevated levels. and so, he had been sent home with the warning to take it easy. and he had, for a time. before he hadn't, which resulted in yet another hospital visit. and another, and another. until the day had come when his parents had been fed up and sent him off to a specialist.

genetic heart disease. passed down from one of his parents, who had received it from their own parent. but neither of his parents had shown signs of such a thing. and in that moment, the truth had come out. yet all that had changed was the knowledge that they had finally discovered what was wrong with nico. and with that, came the knowledge of what needed to happen.

the surgery had been successful. and nico had been given a new chance at life. but the worry from his parents had only grown. and with it, came a much more restricted lifestyle. for many months --- which had most certainly been years ---, nico had lived an otherwise uneventful life. he had been confined to his home or to his school, with no options for sports or activities that may have exhausted him. the only saving grace came with the hours he'd spent drawing. and painting. and creating anything in art form.

it had been obvious, where his life would lead. when he had perfected the swipe of a brush, or the curve of a pencil on paper. the magazines had begun to form mountains within his room. of tattoos and their respective artists. posters of celebrities and movies had been replaced by stencils and artwork that could easily be morphed into a tattoo. and so, his parents did not argue when he advised them that he was applying to a school for tattooing. which eventually led him to his first apprenticeship within portland.

while he had thought his career would have begun and flourished within portland, life had other plans for him. and after only a few years, he had found himself packing up his belongings and heading to chicago. where he had quickly found his place within a local shop. one where he could flourish beyond what he had ever imagined.
