if you aren’t using libby, hoopla and kanopy through your library services then you are severely under utilizing your library card. they are all free, go download them. i’m watching a movie i’ve wanted to watch for years rn bc of kanopy
#hoopla is awesome because you can get eversions of manga from tokyopop MONTHS earlier than their actual release#and libby my best friend libby who has every audiobook and if they dont i just send my library a recommendation for it and then they do#library posting#need a tag for this for the foreseeable future

anyway the thing about fanfic is that it's not essentially bad or good; it's essentially amateur. some people are absolutely out there writing award-worthy prose (some fic writers ARE award-winning writers IRL!), but that's not the point. the point is that we're all telling campfire stories. it's a community, and it's a way to spend some more time in the worlds and stories that we love.
#i think what pisses me off abt a lot of 'is fanfic art' discussions is that a lot of times ppl equate fanfic to literature#but they arent the same thing#the same way an article or critique is not the same thing as a novel. they use writing to achieve different ends#fanfic is its own medium with its own rules specifically the main one being that you are coopting a prexisting story#and they exist to cater to an entirely different audience#i really do think fanfic is a lot more like a analysis or review than a book because it relies on that meta element in the same way#you as the reader have an assumed familiarity with the subject in a way that stand alone stories just dont do#and the gratification often comes FROM that meta connection and recognizing that the current piece exists as a response to another#idk sorry for the tag rambles i wrote a really long essay on fanfic in undergrad and have a lot if thoughts on it
