Female detransition and reidentification: Survey results and interpretation
This survey was created for anyone female/AFAB who formerly self-described as transgender. This includes women who transitioned, whether socially and/or medically, and subsequently detransitioned, as well as individuals who still identify as nonbinary or genderfluid, but have desisted from medical or social transition.
The survey ran from August 16 to August 30, 2016 and was shared through Tumblr, Facebook groups, and on the Wordpress blog 4thWaveNow. Edited to add some clarification on the collection methods: The survey was posted on my Tumblr blog, with the tags “Detransition”, “FTM”, “Trans Man”, “Transgender”, and “Radical Feminism”. By using this method, the post was made available to any of Tumblr’s 550 million monthly users who browsed any one of those tags. While this does not remove bias from the following of this Tumblr blog, it mitigates it significantly. After removing several obviously fake responses and responses from individuals who had not stopped transition, the total response count was 203. Leaving aside all the other data this provides, the sheer number of responses is pretty amazing. Given that the survey was open for 2 weeks and was shared through a couple of Facebook groups, most of which were private, and Tumblr, I think we can safely say that detransitioners are not quite as rare as some would like to have us think. Other than that, there are a couple of points I’d like to elaborate on along with presenting the data.

You know who isn’t appreciated enough? Declan Lynch.
Let me point you to chapter 2 of The Dreams Thieves. Namely, this:
and this:
Declan has been living in fear of the same people who killed his father coming for him and his brothers for more than a year.
He knows they’re looking for Ronan and he’s prepared (he got a gun!) to protect him.
His first reaction after being beaten to a bloody pulp (he’s been repeatedly punched, has an eye swollen shut and a dislocated shoulder, imagine the pain this boy is in) is to try and find his brothers.
I just… This 18 year old child has the weight of the world on his shoulders and no one to help him bear it.

I bet Declan calls Matthew every day to check on him from college. But he also asks Matt to tell him if Ronan’s okay because Ronan would never answer for him

what she says: i'm fine
what she means: why don't people appreciate declan lynch more? he was just a boy when his father died and was forced to take care of his two younger brothers, one of which acts like he hates him. but he still goes to church with him every sunday. when he was beat up by the gray man, ronan was the first person he called. what does this say about his personality?? don't you understand that declan tries his best all the time? the thing is, he doesn't know how to be a father because he never really had one. he can't do this alone, but he also can't make anyone he dates stay. if anything, declan is just as lonesome as adam parrish. he needs the love and support of everyone on this earth.

can you imagine how bad declan must have felt when ronan dreamt matthew into reality but then you read the dream thieves and you see how much declan cares for matthew. we don’t have a declan pov, sadly, but he adores matthew as much as ronan does, they share a room at aglionby, they probably talk in the middle of the night, like
“dec, do you think they’d kick me out if i brought a kitten in the dorms”
declan thinks about that for a second - suspecting the kitten is ALREADY in their room - then he concludes “you could convince the headmaster to give ronan straight As out of the goodness of his heart so probably not”
“so you’re giving me permission”
“would you listen if i told you not to bring it here?”
“no”
“i don’t get why ronan doesnt like you you’re the best”
declan cries internally but luckily matthew doesnt notice because the kitten starts meowing from under the bed and declan just sighs defeated.
“should i talk to the headmaster about ronan’s grades by the way?”
“no matthew i was kidding”
“ok”
“ok”
“good night dec”
“’night matt”
declan wakes up with the kitten peacefully sleeping on his stomach and matthew trying to take a picture. the picture shows declan horrified but still sleepy expression and its all blurry because matthew was trying not to laugh/run away and the kitten hissing

I am immensely bothered by Declan Lynch’s treatment in regards to Aurora’s revival. I mean, was he even told? Ronan, bless him, can be a spiteful little asshole sometimes, so I wouldn’t put it past him to have not even mentioned it. It’s made clear on several occasions that family is of great importance to Declan, too. He wouldn’t not go to see her, if he knew she was up and about again. He would make time for her, the same way he makes time for church every Sunday. I very much doubt Ronan told him. Explaining Matthew’s near-unmaking post-TRK would have to include a description of Aurora’s death, though, yes? That’s a conversation I would not want to be around for.

The thing is, mental illnesses are all subjective and affect each individual differently. Some disorders are seen as more ‘extreme’ or 'severe’ than others- but it’s vital that to understand that each person will be affected by their disorders differently.
For example, a person may have psychosis and an anxiety disorder. In general, psychosis is seen as a more severe disorder than anxiety. However, for this specific person, their anxiety may affect them a lot more than their psychosis (e.g. Their hallucinations may be easily ignored, by their anxiety affects their life constantly in terms of social interaction). In another person, they may be able to work around their anxiety, but their psychosis may be overwhelming and prevent the functionality that they’d like to have.
This is why it’s vital to understand that whilst generalisations in terms of disorder severity may be useful in diagnostic/treatment terms, you must take into account individual experiences- don’t assume the effect people’s disorders have on them.
