This may be an unpopular opinion, but just because you’re having trouble with your tarot readings doesn’t mean you need to cleanse your deck.

I treat my decks like cast iron, the more you use them the more they are seasoned and the better they work. Cleansing your deck strips away that magical seasoning and you’re starting from square one.

There is a time and place for cleansing, but it’s not every month. The last actual cleanse I did on a deck was 3-4 years ago, and the problem came right back (my rider Waite is sassy and likes to only give reversals, I’ve learned to just live with it). Cleansing is my last resort and I think too many people jump to it when there are a lot of other ways to troubleshoot.

Magical sterility bothers me, let some funk in.

Nonverbal Witchcraft

For my witches who cannot speak, struggle to speak, or choose to remain quiet.

This post is a compilation of ideas and personal methods from fellow nonverbal witches. Not everything may fit for you, but hopefully it will give you a starting point!

Spells:

Write the words and focus your energy on bringing them into being. You could burn the piece of paper to finish off the spell. One contributor also mentions burying the paper. 

Our thoughts are powerful. Focus, and say the words in your mind.

You can also mouth the words without speaking them, if that helps you.

Whispering is also great if that works for you!

Find power in silence, use it as its own tool.

Use instruments to create certain rhythms for different spells, instead of chanting. 

If sound is helpful, play music that you feel relates/connects you to the spell.

Cast circles and finalize spells by snapping.

Sigils are concentrated intention–use that to your advantage. They can absolutely be a base for spellwork. 

Use a power source; the elements (candles, soil, the air around you, a bowl of water, etc.), crystals, burning herbs, etc.

To feel energy without using words to confirm: use tools that have stronger energy that you can physically feel.  

Make spell candles, jars or sachets. 

Use sign language! I’m of the opinion that everyone should at least learn the basics, and there are plenty of free resources out there!

Specific spells:

Casting a circle: “You can cast a circle by walking in a circle and visualizing your footsteps imprinting on the earth below, creating a barrier of light (color chosen to correspond to intention at the time), walk the circle 3 times and see the barrier in your mind forming a perfect sphere around your work space, becoming brighter and stronger each step you take.”*

To banish: write the things you wish to banish on a piece of paper, light them on fire with a black candle and place in a burn bowl. 

To release and invite: use two pieces of paper. On one, write down everything you’d like to release from your life. On the other, write down everything you’d like to invite into your life. Burn the release paper and dispose of the ashes, keep the invite paper. (Optional: I like to do this on the new moon, and have a black candle above the release paper and a white candle above the invite paper).

Energy work:

Use a cajon, bells, singing bowl, steel tongue drum/moondrum, or other instruments to raise energy!

“I have a specific snapping rhythm that is ‘magic time’. When I snap the rhythm once or three times it’s go time and I fall into the zone.”*

“For energy work and to raise energy I dance and as my heartbeat gets louder in my ears I mentally chant with it, focusing on a short phrase, intention, or incantation with the energy I physically raised and the meditative repetition of my mind.”*

Use a power source; the elements, crystals, burning herbs, etc.

Most energy work involves movement, rather than words (click here for energy work with restricted movement).

Other ideas:

Worship: write letters, devote your actions, decorate an altar. Prayers don’t need to be spoken! Or write your prayers and place them on an altar, burn them, or keep them. (Bedridden worship)

Divination doesn’t require spoken word, especially once you have a bond with your tools. You can always use writing, sigils, or your thoughts to channel your intent/question. (Bedridden divination)

Charge crystals with your intent and wear them/carry them in a pouch. 

Kitchen witchcraft, garden magic, tea magic, etc. etc. 

Utilize the correspondences of the items in your life.

I think many witches today, especially new/young ones, still really need to learn that just because you're a witch and practice witchcraft, doesn't mean you get to just do whatever you want, consequences be damned.

Your words and your actions can affect people. Can hurt people.

Being a magic worker in no way exempts you from being a decent human being, from being considerate of your fellow human beings, from keeping in mind that what you do, what you say, will impact not only yourself.

You're still not an island. You're still a member of society, of a civilization that you share with other people.

Jasper Thoughts: Low-Cost VS Low-Energy VS Low-Work

Okay so I’ve tried to rewrite this a few times and it keeps spiraling into something incomprehensible. Here’s the fourth version, let’s hope I won't have to rewrite it again.

Please remember that this is all my own experience, your own experiences may vary.

So, there’s an important distinction to be made between “cost”, “energy”, and “work” in magic.

Cost: Literal money.

Energy: Some kind of force drawn from within one’s self or from another source like a non-physical entity or a tool.

Work: How much magical and physical/mundane effort is put into something.

So you can have a low-cost high-work spell, a low-energy high-cost spell, a low-work high-energy spell, a low-energy high-work spell, and any other variation therein.

Let's use an easy example: my Magic: the Gathering (MtG) Wall Wards.

I use the following items in my casting of the spell:

Common/Uncommon “Creature - Wall” MtG trading card (maybe $0.50 USD tops)

MtG enchanting board (designed for free in Canva) printed out in black and white (on a printer at home, which could be done with work/library printers for whatever fees may incur, so we’ll say $1.00 USD just for a number to work with)

1-3 crystals for the energy sources of the Wall casting (you can get a bunch of little crystals, usually dyed agate, in tourist traps for around $5.00 if you pack the bags real well; I just have a lot because of my hoarding problem) which can be substituted for any other energy source (like plants/herbs you already buy from the grocery store or find outside, energy in the area, your own energy, etc)

So mayyybe $6.50 USD for all of the tools for the first casting, and you can reuse literally all of the tools for future castings – you can use the stones for different spells, the card for repeats of the same ward, and the board for further MtG spells. (I intend on writing another post on my boards and how to use them, that’s not the point here.)

Because I handle the crystals and reuse/recharge them regularly, they get to gather a lot of energy, which makes the ward spells pretty powerful. Instead of my own energy, I get to use the sitting, stagnant energy of tools I already have access to.

Since I have enough expendable income to have all this stuff ahead of time, I consider this to be a low-cost spell. While it’s not my own energy I'm using, I consider it to be high-energy because of how much energy I feel myself channeling to it. And I consider it fairly high-work because I work often to maintain, upkeep, and/or recast it.

Low-energy but high-work spells can look different.

For instance, someone who’s chronically exhausted may not have much energy to put in a spell but can still get larger effects from said spell.

Let’s say that this individual wants to draw new friends into their life. They could light a candle (probably yellow for friendship, but the color would vary based on cultural and personal understanding of color) and say a quick chant or prayer, then go onto a new online forum/server or visit a new place in their town to meet new folks. So they’re not putting much magical energy into it, but they’re still putting in the work to give the magic opportunities to take effect.

The same thing can be done for a low-energy job spell – only put in a little bit of magical energy (put together a small spell jar, maybe?) and then follow it up by searching for places that are hiring and sending out their resume.

So why is this even an argument?

I'm not sure. I often see the sentiment of “you need all of these tools and all of your personal energy to cast a working spell” coming from online personas/influencers who claim that intent is all you need and it will overpower correspondences...but who also claim that you need an aesthetically dark workspace full of hundred-dollar crystals and plants and ritual tools that you'll never actually use so your magic “will work”. And these same people just so happen to have shops where you can buy extremely overpriced objects that they picked up from a thrift store or tourist trap and are turning around to sell at a 200+% price increase. Strange how that works, isn’t it? (Sarcasm.)

This isn’t to say that everyone who runs a witch shop online and is also active on social media is a scammer. This is about being suspicious of people’s hidden agendas.

Basically, it comes down to want and need.

If you don’t want to put as much cost into your magic, don’t feel bad about taking a cheap route! If you want to invest in the cost of a good, solid tool that you’ll use over and over, go for it!

If you want to put a lot of energy into your spells, go ahead! If you want to use as little energy as possible in magic so you have a reserve, sure!

If you want to put a lot of work into the spells to get a bigger reward from it, I’m not gonna stop you! If you’re casting spells for practice and aren’t putting as much work in because you don’t want to, that’s also okay!

Intention when Manifesting

Hello beautiful people. Long time no see. Welcome to my first post of 2023!

I wanted to come on here to share a bit about a topic that I think needs more attention. I've already written a post about intention before, so go check that out if you want some more info, but otherwise here we go.

When I hear/see people talking about manifesting, usually they're manifestations are along the lines of...

I want more money

I want a relationship

I want good grades

I want a job

And so on. Which is great - those are all things that absolutely can be manifested (so long as you're willing to do the work to get there), but your wording is crucial.

"I want more money" -> you find $2 on the street, or have to stay late at work.

" I want a relationship" -> you end up with someone you don't actually end up liking, or doesn't have your best interests in mind.

"I want good grades" -> you get 1% better on your test.

"I want a job" -> you get asked to do more chores around the house, or work extra for nothing

etc.

While the meaning behind what you're wanting is valid and achievable, by being more specific you will have a much better chance at getting what you actually want.

So lets make some changes...

"I want more money" -> "I have *x amount of money* in my bank account by *insert date*"

"I want a relationship" -> "I attract someone that aligns with my highest good"

"I want good grades" -> "I achieve high scores of *x* in my test/exam/paper/etc."

"I want a job" -> "I have the job of my dreams that fulfills me".

The idea is that you're telling the universe EXACTLY what you want, rather than making a vague request.

You'll also notice that in the upgraded version of the above manifestations, they're written in present tense (I have, I am, I attract, etc., rather than future tense: I want, etc.) - this helps to solidify what you're saying, and making it sound as if you already have what you're manifesting, and the universe just needs to send it to you.

The last thing I want to say, is that the universe can only meet you half-way. You won't necessarily get that new job if you don't apply for it. You won't meet someone new and make it work if you don’t actually put in any effort. You won't get better grades if you don't study. Put in the work, and the universe will support you.

🎃WITCH-TOBER💐

hey witches (or whatever term you prefer!)! the spookiest season is fast approaching, and so i wanted to put together a little list of something witchy you can do for each day of our favourite month! majority are low key, and feel free to do all, some or none of the activities - whatever suits you best, this is just a fun way to introduce witchcraft into your month.

do a tarot/oracle/rune/etc spread for the month of october (i’ll post a “new month spread” very soon!)

write out your goals for the month - witchy and not. maybe you want to try journaling more frequently, meditation, going for walks, drinking more water or cooking some meals at home!

write about a new topic in your grimoire/BoS - this could be a topic you’ve been interested in for a while or something totally left field. you never stop learning as a witch!

try learning about your ancestors. this can be hard for many (difficult family relations, not knowing biological families, the like), however if you can find a family name that’s always a great place to start!

spend time in nature/connecting to nature spirits. going and talking to the trees is so incredibly beneficial, especially if you need to talk about something you feel you can’t open up to a person about. the trees, the ocean, the forest and the mountains are always happy to listen to us

create a new candle - sounds hard, but it’s a lot easier than you think! i love making seasonal candles by taking a store bought, plain candle, then dressing it with oil and some herbs. bonus points for using herbs associated with fall/spring (depending on where you live!)

do a manifestation spell with the waxing moon! this can be as elaborate as a full ritual, or as simple as writing your manifestations on a bay leaf/piece of paper and burning it.

witch-ify your beverages! adding intention into your coffee, tea, water or any other drink you prefer is super effective witchcraft! you can also add things to your drink, such as honey for attraction, cinnamon for abundance, or sugar for sweetness (taste wise too)!

i’m really big on cooking seasonally, so if you can, try and cook or bake (even just throw together some things into a sandwich!) using some seasonal ingredients (i.e, pumpkins, root vegetables, stuff like that) in a meal today

happy full moon! don’t forget to cleanse and recharge your crystals, decks, and of course, yourself today. maybe put out some water to creat some moon water!

refresh your altar if you have one - maybe give it a good wipe down with some moon water (or just normal water!), cleanse it and redecorate it however you like

create a new sigil today, either creating one of your own design or using an online generator (like this one!) for prosperity, abundance, protection, whatever you like! use in your craft however it suits you

do some shadow work - i recently posted a 30 days of shadow work challenge, so you could try a prompt from that list or any you find!

try giving an offering to a deity, ancestor or spirit you work with or are wanting to connect to. this can be as simple as offering a portion of your food to them, or an entire ritual dedicated to them - whatever works best for you!

look into your astrology! if you’ve never looked at your chart before, there are lots of different websites that can do it such as this one, and they’ll give you a pretty in-depth dissection of your chart!

cleanse your space - either with a smoke method, sound, a spray, or visualisation!

try doing some mindful movement - this can also work as a meditative practice! this includes walking, yoga, running, or weight training. set your intention first, then see how you go!

find out some local lore of the town you live in! it’s often a lot more interesting than you think. i also love to learn about local native plants in my area that i can then use in my craft!

refresh any wards your have set up if you have them, or if you don’t, now is a great time to set one up! they can be very simple or complex depending on the method you choose, and there are several great posts on here about them!

as the moon wanes (gets smaller!), now is the perfect time to do some releasing. write anything you want to let go of - people, things, attachments, etc. - on a piece of paper and burn it or otherwise dispose of it

read a new witchy book - don’t sleep on your local libraries! there’s also plenty of pdf books about witchcraft topics online if you can’t get your hands on

make a spell jar! this kind of magick is super fun, relatively simple, and can be done quickly with items you already have. any jar is suitable, such as the jar from your pasta sauce, not just the aesthetic ones you see on tiktok! add your ingredients along with your intent, seal with wax from a candle and set it wherever suits the intention.

practice some grounding. place your bare feet on some soil or grass, or even hold some soil if you don’t have access to natural ground today. visualise roots growing from the centre of the earth towards you, and from the centre of you towards the earth. see them intertwine and let mother earth ease your physical, spiritual, and mental struggles, pain or heavy emotions

visit a cemetery if you have one close by. you don’t need to go to one holding someone you know, it’s still just as meaningful to visit a new one you’ve never been to (a post soon coming on what to do when visiting a graveyard!)

put together a witchy playlist! this can be for your walk or to start your day, to listen whilst you practice/divine, or just to play to help you feel a bit better. if you don’t want to make your own, you can always just listen to one someone else has curated!

make a cleansing scrub - all you really need is some salt (medium-ground works well for scrubs!), any oil of your choosing, and some herbs if you choose. make sure anything you add is body safe!!! set your intention whilst using and allow the scrub to cleanse away any spiritual “dirt” you’ve accumulated

enchant a piece of jewellery! can be a ring, a necklace, bracelet, a pair of earrings, or even bobby pins used in your hair

write a gratitude list. get specific and write as many individual things as you can!

reflect on the goals you wrote down at the start of the month. have you achieved them? why/why not? is there something you achieved that you didn’t write down that you’re proud of?

do some protection magick. the spirit/earthly worlds are growing closer now, so some extra protection can never hurt!

happy Samhain/Beltane/Halloween! the veil is thin today, so now is the perfect time to reach out to spirits (safely of course!) and try a (potentially new) form of divination!

i hope this gives you some ideas for witchy things to do this month! just as a reminder, your craft is so personal to you, please don’t let me or anyone else ever tell you what you should or shouldn’t be doing in your craft (unless you’re taking from closed practices - DONT DO THAT). never feel bad for not having the energy or not being able to partake in a certain activity. you are always a witch, no matter how you practice.

🔭 It’s funny how Capricorn Lilith becomes such a teddy bear when in romantic partnership. They let go of their hardest thing to do and that is control. They control everyone else, but find it hard to have the same control for their partner since they like them too much. So it’s like they become soft around them, their partner IS their weak spot.

🔭 I don’t know for you guys, but I’ve seen a lot of Sun conjunct Lilith and Sun conjunct Chiron relationships turn south. For example, if you are Taurus Sun and the other person is a Taurus Lilith. Or one is Scorpio Sun and the other has Scorpio Chiron. They always seem to start well and then completely turn, that you wonder if they even liked each other in the first place.

Birth Chart Interpretations- Neptune and Uranus

i would like to say first (altho i know a lot of astrologers who say this but they don't ever really explain why when they say) a Birth Chart is not a personality test. a birth chart is definately much more than that

for those who need to hear this; astrology is not solid and its based off patterns, and a bad or good placement is no reason to dismiss people's actions, people with good placements have the ability to be just as toxic as someone who has terrible placements. overall a birth chart is meant to show someone's lessons. no matter how much i read abt any placement i find there are always conflicting opinions, and no one can really say one placement is always bad or good, since people have free will with how they take the lessons that placements entail. It's always up to you're own judgement to tell if anyone is actually a good or bad person.

since Neptune rules intuition, Neptune hard aspects can show where in life you are meant to learn to trust your intuition

for example: Neptune opposite/ square venus placements are meant to learn to trust their intuition in relationships, these natives can be in a relationship with someone and not even realize the person isn't all they say they are, or their partners could do drugs

The house neptune is in, you can usually have a strange obsession with, but you can't ever fully connect with it and its where you start to lose yourself from lack of boundaries and where you can be out of touch with reality. for example Neptune in the 11th for these natives they can struggle with boundaries with their friends and they tend to have friends who can be a bad impression on them.

So there's some witch going around claiming they cursed/hurt Hekate and is now going for Persephone and Hades next.

This isn't a cause for concern for our deities and not why I'm making a post here. This is for my beginner witches or for anyone who worships anyone who may not know things like this.

Let Me Make One Thing Clear

This witch didn't do shit to Hekate other than possibly piss her off. I don't even need to contact her to know this witch didn't do shit. Hekate is a fucking goddess for fucks sake. Not to mention she is a goddess of WITCHCRAFT. Even if this witch had an iota of a chance, they wouldn't touch her or any deity for that matter.

But trust me, she could definetely touch them.

Bottom line: Don't worry about your deities when someone claims to have hexed/cursed/done anything to them. (Because this stupid shit will probably happen again.)

They are fine and they will be fine. Untouched. Probably just insulted at the very worst. Which trust me, ain't no skin off your nose when the karma hammer comes down, cause it won't be coming for you.

Some of us remember the Hex the Fae/Hex the Moon bullshit. This is this...again. Because some people never learn. But you can learn from their dumbassery.

This person is doubling down by trying to go for Persephone and Hades. Which is just double dumb. If they somehow didn't piss off Hekate, they're gonna piss off one or both of them. Especially because they claimed they were going to force divorce them.

15 Days of Deity Worship Challenge

Hey! Here’s a list of prompts for 15 days of worship for when you want to grow closer with a Deity! This is a sort of “Deity work boot camp” or “trial run” of being a devotee. That being said, in my view, Deity relationships tend to be a longer-term thing, so if you don’t know where to start, I think this list is a pretty good way of dipping your toes into the divine waters.

Obligatory disclaimer to respect closed practices and cultures. This really shouldn’t need to be said, but don’t take from a vulnerable minority if you yourself are not part of that minority. There are a variety of lists of closed Deities available here on Tumblr, so check one of those out if you’re unsure.

Day 1: Introduce yourself to your Deity, or if you’ve already been introduced, reaffirm your relationship with Them and why you work together

Day 2: Do a form of divination for some guidance from Them

Day 3: Offer a sacrifice (It doesn’t have to be “fancy,” it can be clean water, orange juice, honey, a meal, a small trinket, or an action; sky’s the limit!)

Day 4: Make a grimoire/BoS page/tumblr post about Them (taking care to be accurate and thorough with your sources, of course)

Day 5: Pick an epithet of Theirs and write a reflection on it

Day 6: Offer a sacrifice again

Day 7: Meditate with Them for at least 5 minutes, not seeking anything, just being in Their presence. If you can’t meditate, just spend some time musing about Them if possible

Day 8: Create art or a moodboard of Them

Day 9: Offer another sacrifice

Day 10: Do another divination session for guidance with Them

Day 11: Research Their symbols and if possible incorporate some into your style (jewelry, accessories, clothing, scents, etc.)

Day 12: Sacrifice day again!

Day 13: Journal about your experiences with the Deity so far

Day 14: Try your hand at writing a prayer/hymn to Them! If you’re musically inclined, even better!

Day 15: Set up an altar/shrine for Them if you feel you would like to continue this relationship; if not, politely talk to the Deity and thank Them for Their time and your experiences

A norse runework starter pack!

Because runework is basically at the core of my craft, I use it all the time and I’m already more than familiar with it. Runework is super easy to incorporate into everyday life and it’s got a wide range of use so I truly recommend. It feels safe and reliable, and I don’t need to put a lot of time or focus on them. Now let’s get down to business to defeat the Huns.

Their story real quick:

So in His endless search for knowledge, Odin the Allfather hung Himself and was pierced by His own spear in order to be alone with Himself. He accepted no bread and no mead until He found the truth He’d been looking for. And He did: through the darkness of His own mind, Odin saw the runes and reached for them. It was told they were so powerful He could bring a man back from the dead using them.

The basics:

The runic alphabet, otherwise called Futhark. Because I’m a history nerd I try to use the “elder futhark” as much as possible, though there’s a new one going around that’s really popular too.

The more complicated stuff:

Vegvisir (you’ll often find it depicted inside a rune circle like the second pic, especially on jewelry and pendants): Vegvisir is first and foremost a compass, and its name translated from Icelandic quite literally means “that which shows the way”. Historians speculate that its shape might be derived from old sailing wayfinders in Scandinavia, thus its association with the compass. It’s supposed to guide one’s way through the storm, according to a line in the Huld manuscript. (x, y)

Aegishjalmur (Helm of Awe): Protection, protection, protection! That’s what it’s about. All of its branches are considered to be “guarding” the center, thus making it a major protection rune. Once you get the gist of it, it’s super easy to draw and useful. If you’re a fan of dragons like me, perhaps you know Fafnir’s invicibility was drawn from this rune, as stated in the Fáfnismál: The Helm of Awe | I wore before the sons of men | In defense of my treasure; | Amongst all, I alone was strong, | I thought to myself, | For I found no power a match for my own. (x, y) 

Aight quick presentation for other complex runes:

Now; How do I use runes? Where do I put them? 

Draw them anywhere and everywere. I wouldn’t recommend painting a ten-feet inguz on the closest police station but there’s still tons of places where runes can be useful. I draw them inside my wrists and close to pulse points, as way of “pumping” them into my system, so to speak. I write them down to focus my intent during rituals, choosing the one/s I need most atm. In a similar way, I envision them during meditation to clarify my intent. I also use them to decorate altars or devotional art. If you’re a norse pagan like me, maybe look up what runes your main deities are associated with! Quick rundown:

Odin is usually othala or ansuz

I often see Freyja associated with fehu, but that’s also the case for most of the Aesir

Tyr with teiwaz

Thor with thurisaz or uruz; etc…

What about bind runes?

By definition and according to historical speculation, bind runes are futhark runes which were merged into a single glyph (sometimes by carving them all on a single straight line, like oghams). They were super rare back in the viking age but they’ve become popular in the last few years.

People create them according to their needs. This aspect makes bind runes extremely versatile and personal because you can set really specific intents for them. They’re not exactly like sigils, though: when it comes to sigils, feeling and instinct usually guide people’s creation process. As for futhark bind runes, they’re made using existing glyphs from this specific alphabet. Here’s a bunch of bind runes that have been going around, just to give you guys a few ideas of what they can look like:

Daily Spell: August 30th

Spell for Giving Thanks

You’ll Need:

A feast prepared for friends and family

A bonfire

Paper and pens

August 30th was the date of the Charisrteria, a festival held annually to give thanks for abundance and blessings. Offerings were made to Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, and to the war God Ares, and there was a great feasting in both cities and rural areas. As the grain harvest progresses, with the rest of the crops to follow soon, take some time to prepare a big meal and celebrate what you're thankful for.

Invite your favorite people to join you for a big dinner. Try to prepare seasonal food, like home baked bread or roasted vegetables from your garden. Ask everyone to leave a single bite on his or her plate. Light the bonfire, and invite each person to write something for which he or she thankful for on a piece of paper. One at a time, have each guest tossed the last bite of food into the fire saying “I am thankful for the food I have eaten, I am thankful for this fellowship, and I am thankful for [WHATEVER THEY HAVE WRITTEN].”

Once everyone has contributed their offering and shared, add the papers into the fire, and watch as the ashes are carried away in the smoke.
