what would you do if you time traveled back to 2009? [May 9, 2025]
transcript below
Austin: Sorry, I was lost in reverie thinking about what I would do if I could go back to 2009.
Cameron: What would you do? What's the first thing? You go back to 2009, you're a time traveler, what's the first thing you do?
Austin: I don't think I'd do too much for a few years. I think I'd bide my time. I'd just kind of soak it in. You know what I mean? I've gone through the great trauma of—
Cameron: I mean the first thing I'm doing is buying the Sports Almanac.
Michael: Yeah.
Austin: I guess so. Yeah. Yeah-yeah-yeah.
Michael: Oh, I'm— I'm just immediately running into the Homestuck Forums and letting them all know what goes down.
Austin: I'm sorry, I'm operating from a—
Cameron, incredulous: You time travel back to 2009 and the first thing you do is to log into the Homestuck Forums?
Michael: I mean it's 2009, like it just started, I gotta. I gotta head it off at the pass.
Austin: You come back and we turn on, "Oh, did you hear that Deltarune has a new thing?" And then you know, Cameron or I go, "Yeah, yeah, Michael Lutz made it." You know?
[Michael laughs]

its possible to grow in your knowledge in a way that is very destructive to what you thought you knew as a writer.
plant blindness is very useful for writers because it allows them to give their settings placelessness. write stories that "could be set anywhere." I used to imagine placeless places. post-apocalyptic wastelands without trees, towns amidst long roads and cornfields.
Now I know that along the paths or in the cracks in the concrete, the weeds are growing. And a weed is an ecosystem, and an ecosystem is a Somewhere, a network of tethers to a land that is rooted in deep time. Plants are a clarification of where and when we are, and what happened, and what people did to the land, and how long ago that was, and whether they are still doing it. Everywhere is land, everywhere has ecology and geology. The omission of the plants in any setting feels like intrusive clouds of amnesia or jarring black bars censoring part of the reality.
I am conscious of the presence of land in my stories. I am conscious that the land is the ultimate progenitor of the characters, plot, and setting. I am aware that there are plants, which make the setting into a Place with a history and ongoing present.
the way I used to write is irretrievable. places are not just scenery, they are narratives of history, destruction, renewal, energy flow and cultural values. The plants are a driving force with their own agency. I can't not write about the plants!

I keep trying to read cozy sff and I keep kinda going “that’s it?”
Cozy mysetery on a spaceship and I’m just going. This is a generation ship type deal with universal memory uploading/downloading and bodyprinting so your memories get put into a new body when you die and everyone is functionally immortal. Where are you getting the wool and the silk for your cute yarn shop. Why is embezzlement to get rich even like, a thing on a luxurious interstellar passenger liner generation ship that’s been cruising for 300+ years now. This is an exceptionally closed system, where is that money even coming from. How am I supposed to believe there are the normal motivations to Get Rich on a generation ship where everyone is explicitly provided equal housing in a location of their choice for free and a food replicator that can make anything they want also for free and also everyone is functionally immortal. Like I absolutely expect weird status competitions to arise but embezzling from your yarn shop to Get Rich just feels so… what is the point of setting this story on a spaceship when it’s just a cozy mystery pastiche of early 20th century manners in a queer socialism setting that does not care about the generation ship part at all. Just set it on a queer socialism planet or something so I stop wondering who’s raising silkworms and angora goats on this spaceship! Mannnnn I love generation ships and I know I just wanted this to be a different story than it was, because this story ran exclusively on Quirkiness and Vibes so it could do its memory uploading murder mystery and cute aunt who solves mysteries and likes to knit, but I think cozy sff just is not for me because I’m going no back up what the FUCK is the economy on this spaceship

A big non-human intelligence making impressions of humans that show up like ghosts and then later reaching out to Centaurus looking for something like itself.
Can't tell if this is a "weird that it happened twice" situation or a feature of gothic fiction.
