Three experiences i had at my southern california university LGBT center:

-Faculty berating me, yelling into the queer space from outside it, about “what about the LGBT women who would immeidately see someone as big and tall and you and get scared and have flashbacks about men? Just because you wanna be a girl? What do you expect to be done about them??” And everyone in the queer space turning away and not helping me, and i had to end up saying “i don’t know.” Which helped bring the UNIVERSITY FACULTY MEMBER to her senses and she stopped. But no one said shit about it, no one came up to me after, nobody helped or did anything.

-i was facing housing insecurity, and went to the wall of resources (bunch of different panphlets of paper describing different queer organizations and events and listings) and found information for housing. “Afab only.” In fact, basically about half of all the resources were listed as “afab only.”

-I commented idly about how there were not as many trans women in the queer space, and like zero older trans fems when there were plenty of trans mascs. And everyone gave somber, rejected looks and said shit like “no one knows why trans women end up leaving us,” implying trans women are routinely selfishly wanting to distance themselves from the queer community to pass better. And i was devastated thinking trans women just routinely leave fully welcoming queer spaces for no good reason.

Can you guess why some trans women and other TMA people are absolutely terrified of going into queer spaces after experiencing all this in ONE queer space?

Okay, I've been having trouble finding this, but I know it existed because my dad showed it to me multiple times.

My dad, recently retired, had a 40+-year IT career starting in the 1980s. (His biggest claim to fame is writing the programming for the printer driver for a program called PC Paintbrush, which was purchased by Microsoft and became Microsoft Paint, but I digress.) When I was a kid, he showed me an Easter egg snuck into an early Windows operating system where if you typed in a certain command an animation of Bill Gates as Godzilla would show up and start using his breath to zap people into Windows logos. I know it existed and isn't something I imagined because he pulled it up for me upon request multiple times, but seeing as this was the 1990s and I was a child I didn't have the details, like what OS it was. (My best guess would be 95 or 98.) I just want to see if I can recover that animation and document its existence somehow, but I haven't been able to find anyone else looking for it or who knows about it.

Any leads or information you might have would be super helpful! Thanks in advance!

UPDATE FROM DAD: it was on the desktop, you got it to show up by inputting a key sequence that he doesn't remember, and he's pretty sure it was Windows 98.

3. Virtualbox, you can set up a Windows XP virtual box and get old PC games from Internet Archive. You can also check out CD Game World if you need a no-cd patch.

4. Saltybet. A Livestream of MUGEN with thousands of characters fighting against each other, sometimes things get hilarious. Runs 24/7.

5. The Cutting Room Floor, spend hours reading up on cut content from your favorite games.

6. Lost Media Wiki, read up on lost movie, books, animation, video games, etc.

7. Neocities, learn coding and make your own website!

8. WebDSR, explore shortband radio

9. Radio Garden, listen to radio stations from around the world

how to write monsters that actually scare and not sparkle

✦ first rule: don’t over-explain. once you give me the monster’s exact height, weight, claw count, and dental record, it’s not scary anymore. it’s a pokémon. mystery is the muscle. a shadow that almost looks human will always hit harder than a full description of a swamp beast. leave gaps. let the reader’s brain fill them in with their own worst fear.

✦ physics should not apply. horror monsters are terrifying when they break the rules of the world we think we understand. a body folding in ways it shouldn’t. joints bending the wrong direction. silence in a place that should echo. footsteps that sound like they’re coming from the ceiling instead of the floor. once you warp reality, the reader doesn’t feel safe in their own.

✦ chasing is fine. but waiting is worse. scarier than claws, scarier than snarling—try a monster that just stands in the corner and watches. even scarier? it smiles. because predators don’t smile unless they know something you don’t.

✦ let it act like it knows you. a growl is scary, sure, but a whisper of your name in the dark is worse. a hiss of your birthday. a laugh in your mother’s voice. monsters are no longer “other” once they feel personal. they’re invasive. they’re inside your head.

✦ bonus tip: give them wrong appetites. a monster that eats flesh is cliché. a monster that eats wallpaper? horrifying. one that eats memories, so a character wakes up without knowing their own name? disgusting. one that eats reflections from mirrors so you don’t see yourself anymore? revolting.
