Edgar pretended to flinch away when she reached up to touch his hair, but he'd only moved about an inch, and kept a smile on his face, so she'd know that he was only joking. "I eat clouds. That's why it's so poofy." There was a long time that speaking of his parents summoned a wave of hurt and guilt that would hit him square in his chest, making it difficult for him to breathe, to cry, to speak. It'd been years, though, and the hurt dwindled down to a dull ache, and he was able to smile about the good times. Right now, he was smiling, the thought of them fussing over his hair being a familiar one. "You really think you'd be able to braid this? No amount of years of plaiting would prepare you for this mess."
He glanced at her as she searched around for a jack, and he simply shook his head. "The van's too old for a headphone jack. It's why I've put everything that I listen to on CDs." Immediately, he saw her frown, and he couldn't help chuckle at her momentary distraught. "I did, however, get Mia a portable speaker. If you check in the glove box, it should be in there." He reached over, and pulled the compartment open for her, so she wouldn't struggle with it. It got stuck in the most inopportune times.
As her phone went off, he somehow knew that it was his sister, but he didn't say anything, not until Emmeline looked back up at the road. He laughed once more, and shook his head once more. "She's completely ridiculous. Honestly. I have no idea how she's going to get time to take care of the poor thing. Not that she's fussy or anything, but Tea loves the attention, and with work and school, I don't know how she's going to do it." He looked back at the sleeping dog for a moment, and sighed. "Even if she is a diva, I'm gonna miss the little shit. She was a good presence at home. Plus, she kept all the robbers away."
At the mention of coffee, his own yawn reflex kicked in, and he tried hard to keep his eyes open as he yawned. "Coffee sounds great, actually. Especially if you're buying." He elbowed her playfully, and laughed again. Aiden had been wrong. This did not feel like babysitting. "I do, in fact. And it's going. Some days are better than others." He shrugged as he checked the lane on his left, and switched over once it was clear for him to do so. "There are some great customers, that totally make it worth it, but then there's the bad ones." He physically shuddered at the thoughts of screaming women, squawking about incorrect amounts of sweetener, milk, espressos; and the thoughts of irresponsible teenagers, that felt like it was their one job to make an absolute mess of the counters and tables; at the thoughts of old folks, shouting their orders at him, because they were hard of hearing, that he must be too. "But you know, right? You're working at the Burger Joint." That was the actual name of the fast food restaurant. Ten points to its owners for originality. "You should bring Miah in with you, so it scares him into staying in school. If it were me, I'd sign up for even more classes in a heartbeat."
Miles Away From Seeing You || Edgar & Emmeline (Muggle Road Trip AU)
She’d just said pretty much the same thing, so she wasn’t sure why it hurt her feelings when he repeated it, but it did. Her eyes widened and she looked at him again. It wasn’t that they couldn’t be friends, they just weren’t. Not yet. Maybe after this week, if they ever got past this suffocating awkwardness. “I’m sorry. I am.”
Nodding her head, she gave a noise of affirmation. “Mmhm. He’s a senior. He told me this morning that he doesn’t want to go because he already knows everything they’re trying to teach him. Really, he’s too smart for his own good, and he knows it. That’s the problem with Jeremiah.” Emmeline understood where her brother was coming from; he was so smart, and a lot of things came so naturally to him. Instead of pushing himself, he used his advantage to coast through high school, and now that it was almost over, he was bored. “I just want to see him graduate from high school.”
His laughter surprised her and her eyes grew wide again, for the second time in the last few minutes. “I think your mom would have held you down and cut it herself, to be honest. Your dad probably would have bought you a dress.” She shrugged and smirked at him. “Mia’s probably going to drag you to a barber if you don’t cut it before we get to her. I kind of like it though.” Reaching a hand over, she squashed it down only for it to spring back up when she lifted her hand. “Pretty poofy.”
She pulled her hand back into her lap, lacing her fingers together. “If I’m a distraction, let me know. I could always not touch your hair. Or I could try braiding it for you from all the way over here, it might be long enough for that.” Teasing him about his hair was pushing it, just a little bit, but it was the first conversation topic they had tried that hadn’t felt forced, and she was reluctant to drop it.
He skipped the song almost as soon as it started. “Why did you even put that on a CD? I mean, it’s a great song, but you’re just asking for trouble.” She began to look for an AUX jack on the stereo. “Speaking of music, does Mia have a headphone jack in here? I brought my iPod, if we ever get tired of your music.” Turning her head towards him, she backtracked quickly. “Your music is great, though. Really. The Strokes are awesome. Also Alt-J? Not a lot of people I know listen to them.”
Her text tone went off, and she picked it up off of her lap. Mia had finally texted her back, and she rolled her eyes.
[text from Mia, 10:42 am]: You’re being dramatic, Emmy. Talk about Teacup. [text from Mia, 10:42 am]: I take it you’ve left then? [text to Mia, 10:42 am]: OH SHIT WE FORGOT TEACUP [text to Mia, 10:43 am]: Just kidding. We left. Teacup’s in the backseat, sleeping. [text from Mia, 10:43 am]: Haha. So funny. If you forget my dog, don’t even bother showing your face here. I’m serious. [text from Mia, 10:43 am]: Serious.
Setting her phone down again, she looked up at the road. “I just told your sister we forgot her dog. I think she’s going to kill me when we get to Canada. Either that or convince you to smother me in a hotel on the way.” A yawn hit her, and she covered her mouth. “I forgot to drink coffee this morning. I know we just left, but… If you stop for me in the next hour or two, I’ll buy.” It was worth a shot. “Speaking of, don’t you work at a coffee shop now? How’s that going?”

Edgar was a sensitive young man, which most people found somehow hard to believe. He'd been particularly close to his mother, and his sister, his older brother and his father getting along better. He never confronted anyone about his feelings being hurt, usually opting for making a joke of it and laughing to hide how he really felt about the situation. When she said that they weren't actually friends, something in his stomach churned, and suddenly he felt himself wrinkling his nose, and no longer being able to glance over at her.
She was right, he told himself. They simply exchanged hellos and goodbyes before. That wasn't enough to warrant any kind of friendship. He shrugged off her apologies, as he relaxed his face. Honestly, he had no reason to be upset over her comment. She was completely right. They weren't ever friends like that. "It's fine. You're right. We were never really friends, so it's stupid of me to wonder why you haven't come around. You're right."
The awkwardness between them grew exponentially as she shut her mouth, too embarrassed to say much else. He was basically suffocating in it, and he was about to turn the music up when she spoke back up, answering the questions about her family. She sounded just as stressed as he felt, and at that observation, he let out a deep breath. They needed to get past this, so they'd enjoy the drive. "I'm not even a bit surprised about that. He's always been the most rambunctious of the lot. What year is he in? Isn't he almost done? It'd be a waste to re-do the year, or worse, get expelled, all because he doesn't want to go to class."
Silence fell between them yet again, and Joe Newman's nasally voice filled the space, singing about wild things and breeze blocks. Edgar simply bobbed his head along to the music. At least his music was going, and it was good.
"Your hair is getting long." At that, he couldn't help but cackle, the nervousness compacted into his body slowly being released with every fresh breath he took, and soon his stomach ached, the muscles too strained. It wasn't that funny, really, but he'd been so anxious, that he couldn't control how hard he was laughing. After wiping at the corners of his eyes, he shook his head, and flashed her a smile, all prior slights forgotten. "You sound like my mom would have. Aiden's mom said it to me the other day too. If I was competing to be the prettier girl of the Bones family." He grinned, the memory of the last time he'd had dinner with his best friend's family filling his with laughter once more. "I keep saying that I'll get it trimmed, but I just never have time. Between the coffeeshop and living, it's hard to make an appointment at a barber shop."
The familiar drum sequence of "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam started, and without hesitation, Edgar slammed his hand down onto the stereo, his thumb searching for the next button, his eyes still on the road. Syntho-pop replaced the sad song, and his hand returned to the steering wheel. "The last thing we need is to listen to music about a car crash. That would be the worst kind of irony in play, if you ask me."
Miles Away From Seeing You || Edgar & Emmeline (Muggle Road Trip AU)
[text to Mia, 10:13 AM]: This is awkward.
[text to Mia, 10:13 AM]: We’ve barely said two words to each other. [text to Mia, 10:14 AM]: THIS IS SO AWKWARD.
Emmeline could feel him looking at her occasionally, expecting her to say something, anything, to break the silence. She couldn’t blame him, really. The entire time he’d known her, she’d hardly shut up for a second, but that was before he had left for college and came back with broad shoulders and a scruffy beard. He’d just been a background character to the antics she and Mia got up to, but now he made her nervous. Now there was no Mia to distract her from any uneasy moments.
[text to Mia, 10:16 AM]: How could we possibly have anything to talk about? [text to Mia, 10:17 AM]: Damnit, Mia. This was your idea.
There was no way she was going to last… was it a week? A week and a half? Well, whatever. She wasn’t going to last however long it was going to take to drive to Mia. Tucking her leg underneath the other one, she glanced down at her phone again, hoping Mia had texted her back.
[text to Mia, 10:19 AM]: Help me.
Counting the hours on her fingers, she realised that her best friend was in class, and probably wouldn’t be looking at her phone for almost another hour. It seemed like she was going to have to think of something to say to Edgar on her own.
Emmeline turned her head so that she could look at him out of the corner of her eye. His shoulders were raised, like he was stressed about the situation. Me too, Edgar, me too. The song on the radio changed to one by the Strokes, and she grinned. At least his taste in music was A+. She was still looking at him when he spoke, and she started, looking away quickly.
"Uh." Had he expected her to still come hang out at his house when Mia left for college? He’d moved back home when their parents died, and when his sister moved… it wasn’t like she and Edgar were friends. Not really. "I didn’t know you still wanted me to visit you — I mean your house. I mean, I could have, I guess. We’re just not… friends like that, are we?"
Her face was burning. It always did when she said stupid, awkward things. “Sorry, I didn’t mean that. We can be friends. I’m just — Wow, okay. I’m going to stop talking.” She shut her mouth and pulled her lip between her teeth. He’d asked a question about her family, and she would be rude not to answer it.
"Um, my mom is fine." Her voice was really high, like her throat was tight (probably because it was). She cleared her throat before speaking again, and her voice returned to its normal pitch. "My dad is doing okay too. They’re both still as over-protective as ever. Jeremiah just got suspended from school last week for cutting class, and that’s turned our house upside down."
She looked at him again. “Your hair is getting long.” Her conversation starters were so on point today. Rolling her eyes at herself, she forced a laugh. “I’m sorry, that was rude. Wow, I’m so out of it today. Must be tired or something. I just can’t handle the silence, but my social skills suck today.”

"Aiden actually just came over to check them for me." And to yell at me once more to not go, he mentally added as he assured her as he carefully placed her things in the car, and threw the door shut. "All fluids have been changed, and topped off. The car's in the best condition it can possibly be, which isn't much, considering it's almost thirty years old." The thing had belonged to their parents years before, and when they passed, that was the one thing Mia that belonged to them that she wanted to keep for herself. She didn't care about the house, the life insurance, the money in the bank. She just wanted the old, rickety van. With Edgar's help, she was able to keep it up and running, and of course, it only made sense that she wanted it up there with her, which was one of the reasons that, no matter how much Aiden scowled him, he couldn't deny her this.
Edgar led her to the passenger's side, and opened the door for her. With a quick shove, he pushed Teacup onto the floor, whom glared at him indignantly. The dog jumped to the back of the van, and the young man smiled at Emmeline sheepishly. "She's too spoiled, to be honest. Sometimes I have to push her around, to keep her grounded. We can't have her getting a swelled head." He helped the young woman into the car, closed the door after her, and quickly made his way around, to jump in behind the wheel.
This was it. He was going to trek over 2,000 miles to his sister. It would be fine, he'd-- they'd be fine, he guaranteed himself. Still, the young man bowed his head slightly, and prayed to all the gods he could think of that they be safe, and that their trip be uneventful. Edgar wasn't religious; he'd never gotten in the swing of organized faith, but he was definitely spiritual. So after a quick, final prayer, he started the car, and pulled out of the driveway.
For the first couple of minutes, they sat in silence, with the low music as background noise. They occasionally hummed along to the songs, but for the most part, they were quiet. He could feel the awkwardness rising between them, and the young man definitely did not want to drive for seven hours like this, in suffocating awkwardness. He glanced over at her a couple of times, as he racked his mind to think of something to break the silence with, but she was busy looking either out the window, or down at her phone.
"...you haven't come around the house in a long time." He finally said, his eyes on the road. "Not since Mia left." Emmeline had been Amelia's best friend for as long as he could remember. If she wasn't at the Bones's, then Mia was over at hers. She even had her own dresser and bed at Emmeline's house, like Emmy had a room at their's. They were attached to the hip for the longest time, so of course he'd been used to her, to her permanent presence in his home. Since Mia had left, Emmeline had too. She never came around anymore. "How are you? How is your family?"
Miles Away From Seeing You || Edgar & Emmeline (Muggle Road Trip AU)
The moment that she agreed to go on this trip, she began to regret it. Her parents were hesitant — they didn’t think it was a good idea for her to travel across the country with a boy she barely knew (they ignored the fact that she’d actually known him and his family since she was five years old), but they couldn’t actually stop her from going. Her supervisor at work was nice enough about her needing time off, but she was clear when she said that she couldn’t guarantee management would let her come back after, due to the short notice. Emmeline didn’t care too much about that, since she hated the job anyways, but it was still something that made her consider not going.
She was still uncertain the morning she was scheduled to leave. While she hadn’t actually talked about it with Edgar, she had triple-checked with Mia about the day and the time she had to be at his house. Her bags were packed, and her iPod was charged (as was her phone), but she still didn’t feel ready. What if she and Edgar had nothing to talk about, and just sat in silence for the whole trip? The thought made her shudder, and she pushed her cereal bowl away from her, suddenly not hungry at all. She pulled her phone out of her pocket, about to text Mia to tell her that she couldn’t do it, when Jeremiah entered the kitchen.
He threw himself into the chair across the table from her and groaned, loudly. She raised an eyebrow at him. “What’s got you up so early? Usually you don’t show your face until noon.” The only response she got was a grunt as he grabbed her half-eaten bowl of cereal and started shoveling it into his mouth. “God, Miah, you’re such a heathen.”
"Shu’up." His mouth was full of half-chewed corn flakes, and she frowned at his lack of manners. Grinning at her obvious discomfort, he swallowed his mouthful of food before speaking again. "I’m awake at this miserable hour because I’m grounded and Mom thinks cleaning the backyard all day will somehow teach me to behave." He waved his spoon at her. "You could stay and help, you know. If you wanted."
She shook her head and let out a small huff. “Don’t make me laugh. You deserve it. All you had to do was go to class, but no. You have to graduate high school, Miah, that’s all they want from you.” He tossed the spoon into the cereal bowl, making the milk splatter over the table.
"You don’t have to lecture me too, okay? I just don’t want to go. It’s boring. I already know all the stuff they’re teaching me in there. What’s the point?"
"The point is, darling brother, that you have to follow the rules."
"Like you?" His tone was accusing. "I bet you wouldn’t know excitement if it bit you in the ass. You’ve never broken a rule in your life." She narrowed her eyes at him, knowing that he was right but refusing to admit it.
"I have, too."
"Bullshit. Name one rule you’ve broken."
"I’m not playing this game with you, Jeremiah." She looked down at her phone, noticing the time. "Damn. Gotta go. This argument shall have to wait." She stood up from the table, grabbing her backpack off the back of the chair and the duffel bag from the seat next to her. Leaning over the table, she looked at him in the eyes. "Please, just try to behave? For me. Just this week, while I’m gone.”
He rolled his eyes at her. “Yeah, yeah, whatever. I’ll try.”
"Good." She tousled his hair with her hand, and he jerked away. "Love you, little brother. Tell Mom and Dad that I love them too."
He said he would, and she had almost left the kitchen when he shouted after her. “Hey Em?” Turning back to him, she noticed a smirk on his face. “Break some rules, okay?” She grinned at him before heading out the door.
The walk to her best friend’s house was short, and it made her wake up a bit. She’d forgotten to grab her travel mug and fill it with coffee before she left, but the cool morning air was doing a fine job as a replacement. As she turned the corner to Mia’s street, she saw Edgar at the front door, his sister’s van parked out in front of the house. He grinned as he came down the steps to meet her, and she gave him a small smile back.
He’d forgotten that she was coming, which was somehow humiliating. She mattered that little to him. Playing it off, and hoping that her cheeks weren’t burning, she shrugged. “I didn’t have your number.” It was a terrible excuse, she knew. She could have asked Mia for it, but she didn’t want to annoy him before the trip even started. “I hope I didn’t bring too much stuff.” Looking at the van, she grimaced. It’s a van, you idiot. It can hold a lot. She was off to a great start.
Following him to the van, she watched as he opened the back door to the van and set her bags on the floor, next to his. “Shall we head out, then?” Remembering the last thing her dad had told her, she mumbled something about checking the fluid levels before they left. Edgar wasn’t stupid. He’d graduated from college, he knew to check the fluid levels of a car before he drove it across the continent. But, she’d promised her dad that she would ask anyways.

"You're going to drive approximately 3,000 miles? In that old, shitty van? By yourself? Because your younger sister asked you to?" Aiden lounged on the sofa in his living room, his feet kicked up on the armrest and his hands behind his head. He loved Amelia almost as much as Edgar did, but no way in hell would he ever make a trip like that. "No offense, man, but why doesn't she just deal with it? That's so much to ask of you."
Edgar walked into the living room with his phone in his hand. He simply nodded at his best friend, his concentration on the conversation he was having with his sister. It'd been a week since she'd asked him to take her car up to her, but he'd only just shared the piece of information with Aiden. He knew that the young man would lecture him on the subject of spoiling little Miss Bones, and he was trying to hold off on that for as long as he could. Somehow, though, he let it slip past him, and before he could retract it, Aiden caught on and instantly started asking questions.
"Can she not pay for public transportation anymore? Because we can send her money. Where does she even go that she needs her car? Isn't everything in bus-distance? Why doesn't she bike everywhere like your nerd self does?" The questions didn't end, and Edgar cursed himself for even mentioning it to him. He could have avoided this for another couple of days.
He sighed, and put the phone down, to face Aiden. "She hates the bus because she says that people smell. It scares her to bike places because accidents with bicyclists are way more common, more gruesome, and to be quite honest, I'd never forgive myself if something happened to her because I didn't want to take her car to her. Honestly, Morgana, it's fine. I want to do this. I haven't properly seen her in months. Facetime doesn't count, you know that." He picked the phone back up, and read the last message she'd sent him. "Plus..." his features came together in a slight scowl as he read aloud. "... apparently I'm bring Teacup and her friend, Emmeline with me? So I won't be driving on my own?" He turned the phone around to show to Aiden, whom rolled his eyes and started berating him about babysitting. The conversation would never end, so Edgar just gritted his teeth and continued texting his sister.
It was like that for a couple of days, with Aiden warning him against doing it, as Edgar starting packing, loading the car with whatever he thought he'd need for a week on the road. He'd agreed on taking Amelia's dog and best friend, but he hadn't heard anything directly from the girl, so he assumed that she wasn't coming, and continued prepping for his trip on his own. He made piles of CDs, his music ranging from Bastille (hahaha) to Eminem, and with the help of sister, coordinated his stops and hotel check-ins.
"...so everything is basically paid for. You just have to show up with your ID, and you'll get in. Remember that you have to check out by 11am each morning, Eddie, or else they'll charge me for a new day in the room. Also, I've transferred enough money for gas. If you need any more, shoot me a text." His sister spoke so quickly through the phone, that all he could really do was nod, and insert an uh-huh, whenever she took a break to breathe. "Remember that Tea needs breaks too, and you should probably walk her around, for the sake of your legs too. Sitting for too long is bad for your ass..."
"Language." He interjected, slamming the front door of his house shut. Everything was in the car, his luggage, all of Teacup's things, and the actual dog, whom was lounging on the passenger's seat, enjoying the bright sun. "I really hope you haven't turned into a foul-mouthed party girl while you've been away."
"Shut up, Eddie. As if." She snapped, and he swore he could practically hear her smirk through the phone. His sister wasn't a crazy rule-breaker (she wasn't a big fan of drinking and smoking was out of the question) but she didn't necessarily adhere to them either. "Is Emmy there?" She questioned him curiously.
"I didn't know she was still--" And, as if on cue, he saw her, Amelia's childhood friend, walking around the corner with a backpack and a duffel bag hanging off her shoulder. "...Coming." He answered dumbfoundedly, as he fumbled with his keys to lock the front door. He'd completely forgotten that she was joining him. "She just got here. Give me a sec."
Edgar removed the phone from its post between his ear and his neck, and shoved it in his back pocket. He greeted her with a bright smile, despite the sudden nervousness that he felt. "Hey. I thought that you weren't coming anymore." He felt like an idiot for forgetting that she was to accompany him, but it wasn't entirely his fault. "Why didn't you shoot me a text?" He pulled his phone out of his pocket, and mumbled a quick good-bye to his sister, before returning his attention to Emmeline. "It doesn't really matter because you're here now, so no worries. Is this all your stuff? Let me help you with it." And before she even got a chance to answer him, he tugged the bag off her, and hauled it to the back of the van.
Miles Away From Seeing You || Edgar & Emmeline (Muggle Road Trip AU)
"… and last Sunday, we took a boat tour of the Soo Locks, which sounds really boring, but it wasn’t. It was like a two hour long boat ride, and we were right next to these huge freighters. I have never seen boats that big, Emmy."
Emmeline pressed the phone to her ear and nodded along at Mia’s words while she picked at her fingernails. Once upon a time, before she’d gotten a job at the local burger drive thru, she’d actually been able to paint her nails, but now they were plain and uncared for. Mia’s sharp voice broke into her daydream about pastel shades of polish. “Huh?”
"You’re not even paying attention, are you?" She could hear the annoyance in Amelia’s voice, and she shook her head, even though the girl couldn’t see her.
"No, I’m listening. Soo Locks. Boats. It’s really exciting, Mia, but it would be more exciting if I could have seen it myself. I’m sure that your description over the phone isn’t doing it justice."
Her best friend sighed, loud enough for her to hear it through her earpiece. “Look, Emmy. You’re the one who decided to stay in that town. You could have gotten out months ago, like meeeee.” Mia’s voice was taunting in a sing-song way. This wasn’t the first time that the two friends had this argument — they’d had it for the first time months ago, when Emmeline’s parents convinced her to go to community college for a few years before going to university. She had told everyone, including Mia, that she’d wanted to spend more time with her family and mature a bit more before leaving, but in reality, her family couldn’t afford to send her to college for four years.
"I know. I know. For the millionth time, I know. I’ll leave eventually."
"Or you could leave now. I convinced Edgar to drive my car to me, and then fly back. You could come with him."
"You want me to do what now?" She sat up quickly, getting a headrush. "Mia, that’s like… 2000 miles —"
"It’s 2,552 miles. Exactly. He’s doing it because he loves me, and I’m sick of taking public transportation. People smell bad."
Emmeline cackled. “Only you could convince your brother to drive your car over 2500 miles to you because you’re tired of being around people.” She considered it, for just a second, then wrinkled her nose. “That would take forever. Do you know how awkward it would be to drive your car across the continent with your brother? He probably still sees me as the twelve-year-old who used to blush everytime he talked to me. No thank you.”
“Emmmm-myyy.”
"No. No, Mia, it’s not happening."
"Please. Pretty please. I miss you, and since I got that summer job with my professor, this could be the only chance I get to see you."
"Nope. Beg, plead, all you want. It’s not gonna happen."
"You’re the worst, Emmeline Vance."
"I know." She heard a door slam downstairs, and then shouting. "Listen, Mia, I have to go. I’ll text you later, okay?"
"Alright. Know that I hate you."
"Same."
She hung up the phone and tossed it across her bed before heading downstairs to investigate the shouting. After a long hour of her parents screaming at Jeremiah for cutting class and getting suspended, then yelling at her for not being a good influence (how in the hell was she supposed to make him go to school?), she stomped back upstairs, slamming her door shut behind her. Her eyes landed on her phone, and she picked it up.

"You can’t be unhappy. I’m doing this for you, and for your sister, and for your parents. You can’t expect me to just sit by as the wizarding world turns into one where you are worth less than someone else just because of your blood. I won’t stand for it."

"Things have been incredibly hectic, or else I would have come sooner."
"I'm not angry at you, Em. Am I unhappy with your decision? Yes, quite frankly, but I'm not angry. It'd be stupid of me to be angry."
time to begin || emmeline and edgar
"I can’t say I’m surprised. I actually expected you to come sooner."
"Edgar, you can’t be mad at me for this."

"Even one where I've only come to scold you?"
time to begin || emmeline and edgar
"Any kind of interruption from you is always welcome, you must know that."
"You have so many jokes today. It’s almost as if you expect me to just laugh at everything you say out of loyalty."

"I'll take the cake, and maybe consider forgiving you for your horrendous crimes. Maybe."

"Aw mate, it didn’t hurt you."
"I don’t know why you’re still twisting about this. Would it make it better if I apologised to you with my ma’s cake?"

"How would you feel if I threw it at your head? You'd still have me apologizing!"

"At least it wasn't a rude interruption. A startling one, you can forgive, but never a rude one."
"Entertain you? Would you like to see a magic trick?"
time to begin || emmeline and edgar
"Oh, haha, very funny. Yes, alright, I jumped. I was a bit focused until you decided that you would come interrupt my concentration."
"I’m doing well, just a bit bored, if anything. But now you’re here, so that’s not a problem anymore. I’m sure you’ll find some way to entertain me."

"It was well over a foot, you're right. I'm exaggerating how low you thought you'd come off the floor."
"I-... well, I'm not too sure. I just wanted to see you, I guess. How are you?"
time to begin || emmeline and edgar
"I think you’re exaggerating a bit. Maybe you startled me, but not that much. You should stop apologising."
"Oh. Well, in that case, here I am. Did you… want to say something, or something?"
